Francis Scott Key, an American Lawyer and later became known as the author of the U.S. national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. While trying to negotiate for civilians, he was then held captive. He witnessed the twenty-five hour bombardment of Fort McHenry by British during the War of 1812. Upon seeing the flag still flying, he began writing a poem about his experience that fateful night. The patriotic song that he wrote would later become the U.S. national anthem. In 1898, his monument and statue was dedicated at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland. #franciscottkey #frederickmaryland #marylandpostcards #frederickmd #usnationalanthem #starspangledbanner #postcardfromtheworld #postcardfrommaryland #patriotic #francisscottkeymonument #frederickhistory #postcardfromthepast #mtolivetcemetery #mtolivetcemeterymaryland #usanthem #franciscottkeymonument #patriotism

Francis Scott Key Monument Location: W. Lanvale St. and Eutaw Pl., Baltimore, MD 21217 Artist: Antonin Mercié Erected: 1911 Charles Marburg gave $25,000 to his brother Theodore Marburg to hire a sculptor to create a monument to Francis Scott Key. It was restored and rededicated in 1999. Mercié had previously created a bronze equestrian statue of Robert E. Lee in 1890 in Richmond, Virginia. In 2017, the monument was vandalized and graffitied with the words "racist anthem" spray painted on the base. As of this post, there is concern that the monument may be vandalized again due to protests concerning the historic violence and broad mistreatment of Black people. Key specifically wrote a racist lyric in his Star Spanhled Banner and was Andrew Jackson’s U.S. district attorney, where he prosecuted race and slavery laws to the fullest extent, including the death penalty. He also aggressively prosecuted early abolitionists, who had founded the anti-slavery movement in 1833._ #francisscottkey #francisscottkeymonument #boltonhillhistoricdistrict #nrhp nrhpjcg #boltonhill #boltonhilljcg #fastsketch #usk #urbansketch #urbansketching #urbansketcher #urbansketchers #urbansketcherbaltimore #urbansketchersbaltimore #sketchwalker #sketchwalkerbaltimore #baltimore #baltimorearchitecture #baltimoreneighborhoods #watercolorpainting #watercolor #watercolors #watercolorsketch

The Francis Scott Key Monument on Eutaw Place was the work of noted French sculptor Marius Jean Antonin Mercie, and dedicated in 1911. With Key standing in a row boat below, he admires a golden figure of Columbia holding the flag “still there”. • • #francisscottkeymonument #keymonument #monumentalcity #baltimorearchitecture #baltimore #maryland #baltimoreheritage #thebmorecreatives #ig_baltimore #visitbaltimore #onlyinbaltimore #onlyinmaryland #visitmaryland #nikon #nikonphotography #nikonnofilter #architecturalphotography #architecturephotography #aiabaltimore #igbaltimore #baltimorepridehon #topdmvphoto #mybmore #baltimoresbest #baltmag
