Greetings friends, Karen Olson @karenolson.photography here for day three of my insta takeover with @fibercollege “Trees cuddle and stand closely together. They love company and like to take things slow. There is in fact a friendship among trees.” *Peter Wohlleben This friendship is multifaceted. When trees converse, the air is charged with chemical substances, fragrances, hormones, and electrical connections. Placing myself in the middle of the conversation I am illuminated by it. This charged atmosphere infuses me with a sense of well-being, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I am surrounded by the empathy that is the forest. They/we are interconnected. The mycorrhizal network in the ground underneath the canopy of trees functions very much like our neural network. The compounds running through that network are made of the same material as the neurotransmitters in our brain. Elegant designs are at work that benefit us so much. I wanted a way to create something more physically tangible, to get my hands into the work, so to speak. I sought a way to create a unique three-dimensional photo as object process. I had worked in fiber art and collage in the past but never 3 dimensionally. I figured the only way to accomplish this was to bring that same feeling of discovery and wonder into the studio. It took 6 weeks of trial and error to accomplish my first iteration. I had accomplished a few of the things I sought to do by using translucent Japanese papers and introducing additional papers and fiber inclusions. My first sculptural forms, I was excited to share them with the world! Greetings everyone and thank you @fibercollege for inviting me to share my thoughts and my process. My name is Karen Olson. @karenolson.photography I will be teaching the Papermaking, Printing, and Paper Sculpture workshop at Touchstone Retreat in September. I live in a little town called Hope just a few minutes inland from the coast of Maine in the area we call the Midcoast. It is lovingly called the “Jewel of the Maine Coast.” Belfast is included in this area. Searsport, where Fiber College is located, is just a town north of Belfast. There are 62 public trails in the Midcoast area, each with its own unique personality and ecosystem. A few years back I became fascinated with the concept of shinrin-yoku or forest bathing and started approaching my walks on the trails with this mindset. The benefits were astounding, my physical and mental health improved so much, so quickly. Thus began a deep dive into our human-nature connection and how it supports and fosters mental health and interpersonal communication. I wanted to know the why and how of what I was experiencing. I am nerdy computer geek who is absolutely grounded to the earth. It’s a weird combination, I know. I love messing with apps and design programs and photography, but I also love mucking in the dirt, making messes with paper pulp and weaving hand processed natural fibers. This combined interest has led to research in neuroscience and neuropsychology. What is the connection you ask? Similar designs and constructs are found in our brain and in nature.
