Even when we are the most judgemental about our own self, we still care quite a lot about what others think about us. A lot of self-realization is what it takes to be comfortable in your own body. Not just confidence, not self-love, definitely not a good body, but just realizing we are our worst critic, and even after that if we are the most comfortable in our own company, then to hell with what other people think, feel, see, say. Say 'aye' if you have ever heard this distasteful patriarchal line from the society. Though I am very lucky, I have never had to hear this, I know many women who have. Many! The society needs to stop putting women on a pedestal, as and when it pleases them. Stop making rules for women, when you would be absolutely okay with your sons and men in the house doing the same thing. Here are a few sentences that we women have gotten used to hearing, unlike any men we know: 1. Put your hand down 2. Don't wear sleeveless 3. Sit properly 4. Don't talk to men 5. Cover your head 6. Cover your face 7. Cover your arms 8. Don't wear shorts 9. Come home early 10. Shave your body hair ....and the list goes on. How many of these have you heard as a woman. In my circles, we talk a lot about “CALLING BACK YOUR POWER”. But what does that really mean? How does it show up in the world? In the last circle we embraced the energy of the Hindu goddess Durga, often depicted astride a lion. It was about setting boundaries, knowing your self-worth, transmuting emotion into action. So it shouldn’t surprise me (although it kinda did) that this month I suddenly remembered something that I experienced in the healthcare system nearly 10 years ago. A male doctor completely ignored my concerns during a surgical procedure performed awake, belittled me, plowed ahead, and caused me excruciating and unnecessary pain. When someone crossed a line, even if it was years ago, we always have the right to speak up. In fact, it’s IMPERATIVE that we do. If we don’t, we are devaluing ourselves. We’re saying that we’re not worth it. And we lose a part of ourselves. We lose our power. And I sure did. I didn’t realize it at the time. Thoughts that I had were: What’s the point, this is how they do it, rush you in, rush you out, be grateful that you are receiving this treatment in the first place… And to be totally honest, I wanted to forget about it and put it out of my mind. And I did. NOT ANYMORE. I filed an official complaint two days ago and it was already accepted and has moved on to the investigative stage. I share this so that others, women in particular, will feel inspired to speak up and take back their power. Especially against male authority. To draw a line in the sand and say: “NEVER AGAIN.” And guess what? I’ve already won. I’m healing, even now. Even if I don’t get the response that I want. I feel strong. Fierce. Empowered. Like a Goddess.
