This season has been a bit of a grind at times after I missed a longbeard on 4/20. Went looking for a bird I called in a few mornings ago but he didn't talk yesterday and I was starting to get a little discouraged. With some sporadic calling using both my mouth calls and Manzano Madness slate and scratch box, I started hearing popping to my right. In preparation for the morning hunt, I carried a pair of pruning shears and spent close to 40 minutes building myself a ground blind before the sun came up. Two jakes popped up on my right side and came as close as 6 yards. Fortunately, I put a lot of branches there and they didn't see me as they made their approach towards my hen decoy I placed downhill about 15 yards away. As they crossed behind a big ponderosa, I got my grandpa's little .410 up and aimed in their direction. I waited for them to separate, and I let the antique little shotgun ring out. I fulfilled one thing I wanted to accomplish this season and that was to take a turkey with my grandpa's little shotgun. This was my 34th turkey I've taken and although it's definitely not the biggest one I've taken, it was special to do it with my grandpa's gun. Late season turkey is always a grind but in my several years hunting these dinos this was the toughest week I’ve ever had. Not sure if it was the extra pressure from a shorter season or something knocking down the numbers but this was a real Silent Spring for us. What few gobblers we saw were mostly either henned up or not interested and they were all spooky. After I blew at least one bird we called in close by fidgeting, we were having some distinctly hard luck, before I finally got unreasonably lucky on my jake. Nothing beats a last day jake! On the drive home from a 5 day hunt I saw this 2 year old with a group of about 15 buddies in a gully. Managed somehow to put a stalk on from the edge and hit him from at least 60 yards- TSS through a Carlson choke is bad medicine. Couldn’t have worked out better.
