#43. Redemption [3986 BBY] (Tales of the Jedi: Redemption #1-5) Rating: 7/10 10 years after the Sith War... Ulic is now on his own, detached from the Force, and pays a man named Hoggon to fly him to a remote world where he can live in quiet. They end up on Rhen Var, an icy wasteland. Nomi Sunrider, a leader in the Republic now, calls for a convocation where she brings the Jedi together on Exis Station and discusses the rebuilding of the Republic. Sylvar has hardened her mind and wishes to persuade the other Jedi to capture and punish Ulic for what he has done. It hits home because Cathar mate for life and Ulic killed Sylvar’s mate, Crado. She ends up accompanying Tott to Ryloth and then her own homeworld, and Tott realizes she is giving in to the dark side too easily. Vima Sunrider is frustrated her mom has delayed her Jedi training and resolves to be trained by Ulic himself. After stowing away on Hoggon’s ship, she meets Ulic, who at first refuses to train her but eventually agrees to do so. Sylvar catches up with Ulic and Vima at the same time Nomi does, and duels him out of anger. Just as she returns to the light side and puts down her weapon, Hoggon shoots Ulic dead, thinking he has saved the day. Ulic’s final words tell Vima she is officially a Jedi. Shadows and Light [3993 BBY] (from Star Wars Tales #23, Volume 6) Rating: 7/10 Jedi Guun Han Saresh, Shaela Nuur, and Duron Qel-Droma (cousin of Ulic and Cay) are sent on a mission by the Council to hunt terentateks, vicious beasts that feed on Force-sensitive blood. On Korriban, Guun Han witnesses Shaela and Duron kissing and disavows their affront to the Jedi Order. He leaves them behind and continues on to the next planet, Kashyyyk, where he is overcome by a terentatek. Back on Korriban, Duron is haunted by dark side visions of the future. When faced with a terentatek, he loses touch with the Force and is killed. Shaela hunts the beast down but also loses touch with the light side and gives in to the dark side. We are left with a shot of her lightsaber (powered by the solari crystal that only the purest Jedi can wield) dying out. #40. The Four Stages of the Dark Side [3996 BBY] (from Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force) This is a recording from Jedi Master Tolaris Shim, a contemporary of Ulic Qel-Droma. She posits that there are four stages in one’s path to the dark side: temptation, imperilment, submission, and atonement/redemption. Temptation comes from taking action before exercising patience. The dark side offers powers well beyond what the light side offers, so there is great temptation here. Imperilment refers to the obsession over doing the right thing, which Shim said imperils you to remain on or revisit the dark path. Submission comes when one finds it liberating and exhilarating to give oneself fully to the dark side, rendering them a “Dark Jedi”. Atonement: through meditation, reflection, and absolution, a Jedi can atone for their actions and turn to the light. Dark Jedi (those who submit fully to the dark side) cannot atone but can be redeemed through an act of heroism that does not pull on the dark side. Solusar’s addendum adds that after interacting with Shim’s holocron, she learned that any Jedi who kill innocents may not be redeemed but can still atone, oddly enough. The Sith War [3996-3994 BBY] (Tales of the Jedi: The Sith War #1-6) Rating: 9/10 6 months after Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma join forces as Sith Master and Apprentice, respectively, the Empress Teta System is attacked by Mandalore and his warrior forces. Ulic defeats Mandalore in one-on-one battle, leading to his acquisition of the Mandalorian warriors before his attack on Coruscant. Aleema betrays Ulic, telling Mandalore he is gone and she is taking over. Vodo, Cay, and Nomi use the Force to take Ulic into custody. On Ossus, Exar Kun persuades other Jedi to join him in discovering Force secrets the Masters have hidden from them. He brings them to Yavin 4 and turns them to mindless puppets. Kun and Mandalore go to Coruscant to free Ulic. Kun kills Master Vodo in battle, kills the Senate Speaker, and then takes Ulic from the Republic’s grasp. Exar Kun and Ulic sabotage the attack Aleema leads on Kemplex 9, causing an explosion that destroys her and Jedi Crado, Sylvar’s lover. This causes a massive supernova, destroying many stars. As this explosion nears Ossus, Jedi scramble to pack up artifacts and pieces of knowledge, but Exar and Ulic arrive to claim what they can, too. Cay and Ulic duel, and Ulic kills him. Enraged, Nomi Sunrider uses her newly learned ability to block Ulic from the Force completely. It works, Ulic returns to the light side, and he promises to guide them to Exar Kun. Thousands of Jedi converge above Yavin 4, and as Kun makes one last effort to conjure a massive Sith force attack, the Jedi above cast the light side down on him, lighting most of the planet on fire, extinguishing the Sith Empire at great cost. On Onderon, Mandalore and his army face the Onderonian beast-riders and the Republic. Facing defeat, Mandalore escapes to the Dxun moon among the wilderness. Review: Jedi Apprentice #12: The Evil Experiment (Jude Watson, 2001) (Legends) An imprisoned Jedi Master, being tortured and experimented on. A Padawan, desperate to save his Master. It’s hard to read The Evil Experiment in 2024 without thinking of Loden Greatstorm, Bell Zettifar and one of the biggest shocks of the early The High Republic stories. Once again Jude Watson delivered a tale here that is not only a pacy adventure and rescue yarn, but that seems to preempt later stories and projects. I was back on the AI-narrated audiobook for this one so it wasn’t the best experience because of that. However, the addition of some atmospheric music running underneath the narration definitely did help to keep me focused and improved the experience a little. I have a few more to get through like this before I get reach another book that I have an actual copy of… Please @Lucasfilm or @disneybooks - rerelease these in paperback, e-book or audiobook! But the story itself was very good. Obi-Wan’s growth and development as a Jedi is very much on display here, with no Master to guide him. One of the planets in the system, Koros Major, rebels against the coup, so the Krath’s ancient military and the Republic and Jedi end up battling here. Aleema uses Sith illusions to turn the tides in their favor. Master Vodo-Siask Baas’ apprentice, Exar Kun, goes down a dark path, wanting to quell his curiosities of the Sith. This takes him to the Dxun moon, where he communes with Freedon Nadd’s spirit, who guides him to Korriban and turns him to the dark side. On Deneba, the Jedi hold court to decide their next course of action, but they are sabotaged by Krath war droids, one of which kills Master Arca Jeth, leading Ulic to decide to infiltrate the Krath from within, despite warnings from Nomi Sunrider. The Freedon Nadd Uprising [3998 BBY] (Tales of the Jedi: The Freedon Nadd Uprising #1-2) Rating: 9/10 After Queen Amanoa’s death, civil war breaks out on Onderon as many Onderonians still remain faithful to the old ruler, dark Jedi Freedon Nadd. Master Arca and the Jedi discover that Galia’s father, King Ommin, has been possessed by Freedon Nadd as well and has been practicing Sith magic. Ommin takes Arca away as Ulic Qel-Droma battles Warb Null, the armored leader of the Naddists, and destroys him. On Ossus, Master Thon brings Nomi to her new master, Vodo-Siask Baa. Here it is announced that Arca has fallen to Sith sorcery on Onderon and 5 Jedi will be chosen to save him: Nomi is one of them. Meanwhile, Satal and Aleema Keto, descendants of Empress Teta who have formed the secret magic-worshipping society called the Krath, travel to Onderon to learn Sith secrets. They are taken to Ommin, but he is killed by Ulic. Shortly after, Freedon Nadd reveals himself to Satal and Aleema and gives his book and talisman for them and their Krath to learn. Onderon is under Republic protection and martial law and Arca is freed now that Ommin is slain, but Arca warns Ulic of the Sith prophecies Freedon Nadd espoused, that one day they will reclaim their dominion. The Saga of Nomi Sunrider [3999 BBY] (Tales of the Jedi #3-5) Rating: 8/10 Jedi Andur Sunrider, his wife Nomi, and his daughter Vima travel to the Stenness System to meet the watchman, Master Thon. But at a hyperspace jump gate on the way there, Andur is killed by Hutt thugs and communes through the dead to Nomi to continue the journey and learn the ways of the Force. On Ambria, a planet in the Stenness Node, Nomi meets a Vultan Jedi Knight named Oss Wilum and she meets Master Thon, a Tchuukthai, who becomes her teacher (and Vima’s). There is Dark Side energy on the planet, but Thon purposefully lives among it to test himself. Oss Wilum ends up leaving for Onderon with Tott Doneeta, to help Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma in their battle against the Freedon Nadd Uprising, leaving Nomi with Thon. Meanwhile, pirates, led by Finhead Stonebone, attempt to steal ore from an Ithullan Ore Hauler protected by Bogga the Hutt. Hutt warriors aboard Enforcer One capture the pirates and bring them to Bogga. Bogga offers Finhead to spare his life in exchange for his killing Master Thon and bringing Bogga the adegan crystals. As the pirates and enforcers reach Stenness, after some conflict between Thon and Nomi, Nomi decides to take up the Jedi way, using battle meditation and eventually her lightsaber to put an end to their enemies. This marks the beginning of her true training as a Jedi. Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon [4000 BBY] (Tales of the Jedi #1-2) Rating: 8.5/10 Ulic Qel-Droma, his brother Cay, and Twi’lek Tott Doneeta are sent to Onderon by Master Arca Jeth to keep the peace. There is a war there between the technologically advanced walled city and the habitants of the wilderness, who ride beasts that came from the moon Dxun. They meet Queen Amanoa there, who tasks them with fending off the beast-riding attackers. They do so but are unable to stop some of the warrior commandos from kidnapping Amanoa’s daughter and heir, Galia. This provokes Amanoa to order them to find the kidnappers. When they go to find them, they learn it was a staged abduction, and that Galia purposefully left to marry the Beast-Lord Oron Kira. Here they also learn that Queen Amanoa and King Ommin are entrenched in the Dark Side, a product of the former Jedi Knight Freedon Nadd’s rule over them 400 years ago, in which he brought the dark ways of the Sith with him. When they try to convince the Queen to leave the ways of the Dark Side and allow this marriage, the Queen calls on the spirit of Freedon Nadd. The Jedi escape and aid the Beast-Riders in their war against the corrupted Onderonian royalty. Master Arca comes to save the day, using battle meditation to change the tides in the Beast-Riders’ favor. They win and Galia marries Oron, but Arca warns a dark side faction festers that must be monitored. The Sith specter that greets her says she has woken him from his 10,000 year slumber and sees through her ruse, shows her tormented Jedi specters who have tried to infiltrate the temple in years past, and ultimately engulfs and kills Vara, letting this be a lesson to any others who wish to attack. READ DESC FOR LORE (if interested) Throughout the Kid Crazy story, I planned on Nollan’s costume changing often, about once every season. For those who watched my introduction video, I said that I would decide the story into 5 seasons, season 5 being the climax of the story. This costume in the picture would be the one Nollan wears in season 5. I always imagined Nollan ditching the cape in the series. I actually wanted the cape to be a symbolic image throughout the series, representing his personal growth. I imagined Nollan ditching the cape as being symbolic of Nollan becoming a man and growing out of some of his childish endeavors. I’m not saying by season 5, Nollan is all serious and no fun, but rather he has just matured from a child to a man. Also by this point, the gauntlet that held the gem that gave Nollan his powers has been destroyed and the gem has been placed on his chest. It’s actually revealed that by having the gem closer to Nollan’s heart makes him way more powerful, but I won’t get into detail as of why it does that. The drawing looks kinda stiff in my opinion, but I’m somewhat happy with how the shading turned out. I don’t usually shade so this was my first time doing that. That’s all I have to say for now. Light and Shadow [~4000 BBY] (unpublished short story from Star Wars Fanboy Association) Rating: 7.5/10 A Jedi named Dray is on a meditative astrogation mission to an undiscovered verdant planet he names Vigil. On it, he meditates and thinks back to when he killed Yeres Threem and many Jedi after. With the Force, he senses a ship crashing, and upon inspection, it is on fire with a young girl inside. He uses the Force to save her and learns her name is Nova and she is highly Force-sensitive. As they talk, two intruders arrive, a brother and sister named Xash and Sindra, who claim their master has tasked them with taking the girl, and they fight Dray for her. When Dray gives in to the dark side to kill them both, it frightens Nova, who runs away. Dray eventually finds Nova imprisoned by Thannor Keth, a Sith Sorcerer, in a fortress designed to repel the Force. They battle, and Nova implores Dray not to use the dark side again. Even when it seems he is about to be defeated and that is the only way through, he rejects it, joins hands with Nova, and creates a shield that repels Keth’s attack and kills him. The story ends with Dray taking Nova with him back on his ship, this time going to Ossus, so she can begin her training. #31. Jedi Protector [~4000 BBY] (from Star Wars Galaxy Magazine #13) This is an interactive RPG that was included in the 13th edition of “Star Wars Galaxy Magazine”. The story likely has no tie-ins to other important in-universe events but does technically occur here chronologically. It’s an interactive adventure where you play the role of Shalavaa, a Jedi Knight, sent by Master Ortraag to a colony where you are to protect the farmers and “nerf herders”. When one goes missing, you explore, eventually finding an animated venous plant that tries to attack you. Depending what you roll, you either kill it swiftly, do so sloppily, or have to be rescued by Master Ortraag. The Jedi was seduced to the dark side some 600 years after the Hyperspace War, either through discovery of King Adas’ ancient Sith holocron or an apprenticeship with exiled Dark Lord Naga Sadow on Yavin 4. Some 400 years after Freedon Nadd’s death, in roughly 4000 BBY, Jedi Master Arca Jeth discovered he had possessed the Queen of Onderon, Queen Amanoa. Master Jeth and students found Nadd’s tomb was the source of significant dark side energy. Freedon Nadd’s spirit left Amanoa and entered her husband, King Ommin, who attempted to kill Master Jeth. Finally, his spirit left Ommin and went to a secret society called Krath, founded by descendants of Empress Teta. The Krath went on to cultivate Sith secrets and dark side energy, while Master Jeth took measures to secure Freedon Nadd in a sarcophagus where he believed his dark side influence would remain trapped. Review: Jedi Apprentice #11: The Deadly Hunter (Jude Watson, 2000) (Legends) Didi Oddo is a lovable café owner who skirts the fringes of legality and is held in high regard by many Jedi (Qui-Gon and Yoda among them). But when a bounty is mysteriously taken out on his life, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are drawn into a mystery that with lead them from the lower levels of Coruscant to the halls of the Senate building and beyond. So we’ve got the Coruscant underworld; a shape-shifting bounty hunter; a dive café owner who is a bit of a hugger and counts Jedi as friends; Jedi derring-do in the busy skylanes of the Galactic Capital; plus murder, mystery and senate murkiness. It’s not quite the opening act of Attack of the Clones, but there’s a steady and remarkable stream of similarities in this eleventh book in three Jedi Apprentice series, which was written and published when Episode II was in production. Surely no coincidence. It feels like, at the very least, conversations must have been had about the general milieu of the movie in production. Or maybe George was copying Jude’s homework? Who knows. Either way, the result here is another great little instalment in the Jedi Apprentice series. We’re also heading back into some serialised storytelling, so we’ve got a cliffhanger ending and some plot threads introduced here that are clearly going to carry through into subsequent novels. So the story isn’t wrapped up by the end, but it stands proud as a good opening act and a nice little mystery adventure. New characters Didi and his daughter Astri are enjoyable and the deadly hunter herself - who remains unnamed in this novel - is a formidable foe. She’s not a changeling like Zam Wessel, but is a master of disguise who can compress her body to slip into and through small spaces. And she’s pretty handy with that laser whip, making for some great action sequences that play out differently to the standard deflecting and somersaulting shenanigans. #29. Rebirth of the Sith Empire [4904 BBY] (video from The Old Republic) This is the story of Odile Vaiken, who was just a child during the Hyperspace War, a loyal servant to the Sith overlords. When the Sith retreated from the Republic, he learned to become a great pilot. The Sith exiles ultimately ended up in Dromund Kaas, where they would establish their initial empire. Here, the Emperor established a Dark Council and united the Sith factions into one, intent on eventually conquering the Republic. This is also where Vaiken was shaped into an imperial leader. Vaiken drafted all non-Force users here into a grand military, the first task of which was to wipe out the natives on Dromund Kaas and make room for the imperial capital. He also began work on the grand imperial armada, which he knew would take centuries to complete and that he would never see the final product of, a testament to his loyalty to the early Sith empire. Savior [4975 BBY] (from Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories) Rating: 6.5/10 10 years after the events of “Paragon” and ultimately 25 years after the Sith crash landing on Kesh, now Grand Lord Yaru Korsin has heeded his wife Seelah’s advice and moved from the temple of Omen down to live among the people of Kesh. However, two conspiracies against Yaru occur simultaneously. Seelah and her son from Devore, Jariad, try to assassinate Yaru. At the same time, Adari Vaal, who Yaru thought was his closest Keshiri friend, stages a resistance attack she has secretly been organizing for years. The resistance attack involves the Keshiri stealing back their uvak from the stables and flying them. But Nida, the daughter of Yaru and Seelah, was tipped off about Adari’s attack from Adari’s son, Tona. So she sabotages it and leaves Adari with only a fraction of the riders she needed. Yaru is killed by Jariad, but we learn Nida has killed Jariad, too. After a proton grenade attack in the sickward by Yaru’s main bodyguard Gloyd, Seelah is left trapped under a slab of concrete. Here, Nida confesses to what she has done and reveals that in Yaru’s will, he has named Nida as his successor as Grand Lord. Nida’s final act is to trap Seelah in the temple and bar any Sith from coming to her rescue. Paragon [4985 BBY] (from Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories) Rating: 7.5/10 This story is set 15 years after a group of Sith, led by Yaru Korsin, crash landed on Kesh and (with the help of persecuted Keshiri Adari Vaal) convinced the Keshiri people they were the exalted religious figures known as the Skyborn. Now 15 years have passed and the charade is now fully ingrained in Keshiri society. However, a rift has formed between Ravilan, who leads the 57 Sith species, and Yaru (himself and his wife Seelah both humans). Ravilan wants to leave the planet, while Yaru seems content to stay here and grow their rule. So Ravilan ends up sabotaging the Sith by secretly putting a substance into one of the town’s aqueducts that is deadly when combined with moisture. This kills thousands of Keshiri, but his plans are thrown off when he learns that many more towns fell victim to this, with now hundreds of thousands of Keshiri dead. Later, Seelah secretly confesses to Ravilan before he is killed for this act of treason that she infected the other cities. She is content with genociding the Keshiri just to cast out Ravilan and his Sith species following, so that the Sith Empire can start anew. We are left with a secretive meeting, where Seelah’s assistant, Tilden, speaks to a hidden meeting of Keshiri and admits to having a secret purpose. The group, including Adari, encourage Tilden to keep up his efforts, as they have something planned. Some new details from these entries: -A log from Jedi Master Odan-Urr, who (as his Master Ooroo foretold) would become one of the most ancient Jedi to ever live -The Sith Holocron that Odan-Urr discovered told him that Naga Sadow vanished with his followers after the battle with Empress Teta. This is jarring, because this holocron had been abandoned on Koros Major well before the retreat, alluding to some mystical Sith powers it possesses. -Prior to the attack, rumors existed on Korriban that the Republic was plotting to overthrow the Sith. This mindset was part of what motivated the Sith warriors to so loyally follow Naga Sadow into battle. Tales of the Jedi: The Fall of the Sith Empire #1-5 [5000 BBY] Rating: 6.5/10 Dark Lord Naga Sadow leads the Sith into war against the Republic, on the lands of Coruscant, Koros Major, and Kirrek. On Coruscant, where Jedi Odan-Urr and Memit Nadill aid in battle, they discover Sadow’s forces are only a fraction of what they appear, the product of a Sith illusion the Dark Lord is casting from his remote meditation sphere. On Koros Major, Gav Daragon leads the fight. And on Kirrek, the former rebels that fought against Empress Teta’s rule join in battle to win their amnesty. After Gav is killed in an explosion on Sadow’s meditation sphere he learned Gav onto, Jori and the other starships defending Teta’s worlds follow Sadow and the Sith. They stop at the gas giant Primus Goluud, where Sadow’s forces set off flares, trying to capture others in the explosion. Naga Sadow tries to escape but is caught in Korriban by Ludo Kressh and his loyalists, who declare Kressh is now the Dark Lord. Sadow has one of his ships ram into Kressh’s ship, killing him. Skyborn [5000 BBY] (from Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories) Rating: 7/10 Occurring right after Precipice and Yaru’s crash landing of Omen on Kesh, this is the story of Adari Vaal, a Keshiri geologist and widow to Zhari Vaal. Zhari was a member of the Neshtovar, who rode on flying beasts called uvak. Adari is persecuted by her community for teaching that the landmasses of Kesh are the product of volcanic eruptions, instead of the result of a battle in their religious teachings between the exalted Skyborn and the antagonistic Otherside. When the persecution becomes life-threatening, Adari takes her late husband’s uvak, Nink, and flies him away. While doing so, she sees the crash-landed Sith, and is reached out to via the Force (though she doesn’t know it). She goes to investigate and ends up teaming up with Yaru and his crew, convincing the Keshiri people and the Neshtovar in particular that the Sith are actually the Skyborn they pray to. They convince the Neshtovar to quarter them and offer their uvak for flight. Precipice [5000 BBY] (from Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories) Rating: 7/10 This short story, and the subsequent story Skyborn, occur between Tales of the Jedi: Fall of the Sith Empire #3 and #4. Captain Yaru Korsin is flying the Omen to Kirrek, under the orders of Naga Saddow, the Dark Lord of the Sith, as they prepare for war with the Republic and its Jedi. The ship is transporting precious Lignan crystals, to power lightsabers. However, a Jedi starfighter sabotages the ship’s jump into hyperspace, collaterally knocking it off track, plummeting the ship into the atmosphere of Kesh, a planet in Wild Space. Once here, hundreds of Massassi warriors die due to something in the air. With no way to fly his people out, Yaru realizes they may be stranded. However, a glimpse of a winged beast with a rider restores his faith, and he resolves to bring his people out of this planet.
