It's been a rough month for me, I've struggled to recover from the case of Covid I contracted in March - and ended up not working through April at all. I'm starting to do little sessions again - so yesterday I photographed an editorial bridal session with an incredible team - @threerootsfloraldesign & @annefitzgeraldmakeupartistry - at Topsmead State Forest There's been a lot of talk in the industry lately about why photographers do "Styled Shoots" with folks that aren't "real clients" - and for me; its because at heart, I'm an artist. I love working with clients - but one of the ways I get to CREATE is by designing ideas and trends I would love to see happen at weddings; and it gives my clients a chance to see what I can do and dream up, and maybe inspires them. For this bridal session I wanted to do two things: One, focus on a wedding dress that was a deep rich color, and my inspiration came from the yellow daffodils of spring and rich amber honey. Second, I wanted to showcase what happens when vendors who are on the same wavelength work together; having a cohesive team is so vital for your wedding. My model, Laura, is actually not a professional model, but was a bridesmaid I had in one of my 2023 weddings that I asked to do this session. Making magic in Brooklyn ⚡️ Beyond grateful for the opportunity to attend the @edenstrader artificial light workshop — it was so incredible to learn from Eden + her amazing team, and to meet a community of the most talented photographers! Thank you Eden, for taking something that can feel so overwhelming and for making it feel accessible AND fun! Now, time to get a little sappy: A year ago, even a couple months ago, I wouldn’t have had the courage to sign-up for a workshop, to invest the time and money into something that felt intimidating and scary, all for myself… BUT, I promised myself that 2024 would be the year that I finally put the work into myself — that I would do the things that are intimidating, say yes to the opportunities that I know will give way to growth, to invest in myself + my career, and hardest of all: to believe in myself. I’ve always played it safe, but I’m finally at the point where I’m ready to trust in chasing the things that bring me joy and allowing myself to find who I truly am throughout this journey. So, I am officially rejecting the fears that have always controlled me, and instead, I am embracing the beauty in allowing myself to try, try, fail, and try again. The negotiations of actual weddings I find painful: “What packages do you offer ? Is the trial included?” Not being a ‘bridal hair and makeup artist’ - I don’t do any of this. I also don’t believe in charging a premium for weddings just because it’s a wedding. That’s up there with charging more for a woman’s white button down shirt vs a man’s at a dry cleaners.
