Our newest chipmunk is having trouble with his back legs. Has a pain response, which is good, so we administered medication and we will wait to see if he improves. Two adult chipmunks came into care tonight. The first (photographed here) was found circling after a run in with a cat. I did not feel any fractures during his exam, but if we don’t see signs of improvement in a day or two we will take him for X-rays. He has been given fluids and medication. He is now resting and hopefully with some time he will be back on his feet in no time. The second was a nursing mom who unfortunately got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. She sadly passed shortly after arriving. This very sweet female chipmunk came into care this morning. She was caught by the finders dog so she likely has some internal issues going on along with what we can see externally. Upon initial intake, she is very lethargic, has a very low body temperature, and has difficulty bearing weight on her front leg. While we do not know the full scope of her injuries just yet we are working on warming her up then we will focus on hydration and pain management. 🐿️ On PEI we have 3 species of squirrel: red squirrel, northern flying squirrel, and eastern chipmunk. ❄️ Let’s talk about how these creatures are excellent winter planners. In the fall, they work hard gathering nuts, seeds, and mushrooms, creating a special stash for the colder months. Once temperatures start to drop, they develop a thick coat of fur and build insulated nests, high up in trees - helping them stay warm. During winter, they're not as active, conserving energy like little winter couch potatoes. They also change their diet, moving from fresh fruits in the summer to their stored nuts and dried snacks in the winter. 🍄☀️ Bonus fact: Squirrels dry mushrooms for winter by placing them in sunny spots. The sun acts like a natural dehydrator, helping them store food for later. Next time you're outside, keep an eye out for mushrooms hanging from trees - you may have stumbled upon a squirrel cache! Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus) I was at a park in late September, when I noticed little mammals scurrying along the forest floor on the side of the trail. When I got a closer look at the mammals , I noticed that they were eastern chipmunks. I was excited to see them, as I have never encountered chipmunks before. As I walked further along the trail, I noticed two chipmunks get into a scuffle. One of the chipmunks chased the second one onto the other side of the trail. Further down the trail, I came across a chipmunk feeding on a log. It was at this opportune moment, that I took a few photos of the furry rodent. The eastern chipmunk lives in most of the eastern U.S. (except for the parts of the Southeast) and southern Canada. These mammals prefer deciduous forests with an abundance of logs and tree stumps. The eastern chipmunk has the capability of climbing trees, however; this species is not arboreal. The Eastern chipmunk mostly spends its time on the forest floor foraging for food, and they have underground burrows with extensive tunnel systems. Our overwinter chipmunk is checking out his new winter home for the first time. It’s deep enough where he can burrow, we’ve added “tunnels” under his substrate for him and he’s already started using them. Check out his new wooden hut that was gifted just for him by someone (please let us know who you are so we can thank you). He uses it as an access point to his burrow. The little injured chipmunk we took in earlier this week has left to go back home. The wound on the leg is healing nicely, completely scabbed over and the fur around it has started to grow back and no infection. He’s able to use the leg and put weight on it with no issue. He was starting to get very stressed out being in a cage. Since the wound is healing, he is using the leg with no issue, and no infection/pain we felt the most humane thing to do was to release him back where he was found where he will continue to heal. This juvenile chipmunk came in tonight with an older devolving injury on one of his back legs. Finder noticed the injury and worked on catching him to get him into care. Thankfully the injury is healing nicely, no sign of infection, and the leg is fully functional. Alvin, is that you? 🐿 #EasternChipmunks are rare patients at the Sanctuary! These siblings came into care after they were discovered wandering around a backyard. Unfortunately, they were fed puppy milk replacer by a well-intentioned rescuer, meaning it was unsafe for them to be reunited with their parents. Puppy and kitten milk replacers are not okay for wildlife, and neither are cow and goat’s milk…nor any other milk that wasn’t specifically designed for that species! 🍼 These inappropriate milk replacers can lead to bloating, diarrhea, severe pain, and even death. 😞 After the chipmunks received a full medical exam from our friends at @wildlifecenter_va, they came to RWS for continued care. While this duo is certainly aaaaaadorable, we hope their story serves as a reminder of what to do if you encounter a critter in need. [EN] Over this summer period, there have been only three Eastern chipmunks coming to the backyard daily. Every year this number varies for many reasons, but mainly because these little critters are all susceptible to predator attacks. Most of them do not live past three years. They can remember humans and can recognize the people that can be trusted as a source of food. Their memory is evident in studies where they were able to navigate a maze. The French word for chipmunk is tamia—a reflection of chipmunks’ genus, Tamias. But in Quebec, the striped critter has also been called un suisse. That term, meaning a Swiss, is thought to have been inspired by the striped uniforms of the Pope’s Swiss Guard. [FR] Au cours de cette période estivale, il n'y a eu que trois tamias de l’Est qui sont venus quotidiennement dans la cour. We know you don’t want to think about the end of summer yet, but we assure you our wild neighbours are already getting prepped for the fall and winter. To reduce the chances of harming wildlife, and to prevent them from making your home their winter abode, now is the time to get some chores done! Need to trim a tree? From a wildlife perspective, this is the best time, as most birds will be done nesting so you won’t accidentally remove a branch supporting an avian family. Caution should still be taken as some types of birds, like owls, will roost in holes in trees. Are there access points to your home? Repairing broken fascia and soffits and covering vents and any other openings that an animal can crawl into or fall in (e.g. window wells) will prevent conflict/emergency situations in the winter. Have digging to do? Again, now is the right time! Babies will have emerged from underground den sites (e.g. chipmunks) and most animals that spend the colder months underground (e.g. snakes) won’t yet be in their hibernaculums. Just a reminder too, migratory birds are flying south again – be sure to make your windows bird safe (link in bio) to help them have a safe journey.
