Last night at the @nycxdesign awards hosted by @interiordesignmag, the Galaxy pendant by Charles and Ray Eames was awarded Best New Iconic Product. Galaxy emerged from archival research led by @form_portfolios and @eamesoffice. First presented in 1949 by Alexander Girard at An Exhibition for Modern Living in Detroit, Galaxy garnered attention from notable figures such as Girard, Marcel Breuer, and Philip Johnson. Despite significant interest and numerous inquiries, the light was never put into production — until now. Developed in collaboration with @cassinaofficial, Galaxy combines the distinctive form of the original design with the latest contemporary technology. The man in the photo is me. I worked during college at the Office of Charles and Ray Eames – aka Eames Office. There at 901 Washington Boulevard in Venice, California I mentored directly under Ray Eames and working closely with office legend Sam Passalacqua. One day Ray asked if I could draw blueprints to scale, which I could. She tasked me with drawing a full-size drawing of the 901 signage of the office so up a ladder I went measuring the painted sign for reference. And here I am at Eames Office frozen in time, (thanks to my Eames Office colleague Robert Dean, who grabbed a Polaroid camera and suggested we take this image,) holding the sheet that became that original work. I fondly recall one of my first days at Eames Office an executive from IBM came in to see Ray. He started to talk to me and said, 'You may or may not know it yet but you are in a special place and one day people will be fascinated to know you worked here at this young age.' In retrospect, I knew where I was at that time was exceptional and important, and as for the rest? He wasn't wrong. There is a long and very funny personal story, one of fate, unforeseen timing, and solid determination, behind how I got to work for Ray. I hope one day to tell it.
