Once their hearing kicks in, they hear about four times better than most people, including hearing a wider range of frequencies. For the first two weeks of their lives, puppies can’t see their worlds 👁️ Their eyes open when they are 14-to-21 days old, but their sight is still limited. Happy Trivia Tuesday! 🤓 This morning’s trivia poll is actually a recent topic of debate. The oldest dog that ever lived whose claim was verified was Bluey, an Australian Cattle Dog who lived to be 29 years old. Bluey’s record has stood since 1939, only being briefly broken by Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo. Bobi was first certified by Guinness World Records to be 31 years old in February 2023. However, his record was suspended in January 2024 due to questions about a lack of evidence. So Bluey (at least temporarily) regains her 85-year record as the world’s oldest dog; I know we all wish our own pups will break it! (Featuring Luna P)

The correct answer to this morning’s trivia poll is…false! 😱 Dalmatians are almost always born without spots, instead covered in a coat of pure white fur ⚪️⚫️ However, beneath that, the skin is often already pigmented with the color that will soon develop in the fur. The color of the nose can sometimes be an early indication as to what color spots a dalmatian puppy is going to have, but the full aesthetic won’t be visible until the pups are around 10 to 14 days old. Pertaining to this morning’s trivia poll, the answer is yes… dogs may not be able to speak, but they can certainly say sorry! 😲 In an instance where you caught your pup misbehaving, one of the common ways your dog will try to apologize is by making “puppy eyes” 🥺 or tucking its tail between its legs. Avoiding eye contact and lowering their ears are also common ways for dogs to apologize. When dogs play with one another, they often have to apologize for overstepping the agreed-upon golden rules of fair play and they have to be forgiven for the play to continue. To answer today’s Trivia Tuesday poll, around 45% of all dogs sleep on their owners beds! 😴🐶 According to a recent survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association, nearly half of dogs sleep in their owner’s beds. The survey found that 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs, and 32% of large dogs sleep with their owners. Lisa Shives, MD, medical director of Northshore Sleep Medicine, a sleep center outside Chicago, says “there are all kinds of medical benefits to having a pet and some people might feel safer or calmer with a dog in their bed.” Internationally known dog trainer Victoria Stilwell says if your dog has no behavioral problems then it’s OK to let them sleep in your bed. In truth, it’s actually a safety mechanism and an important part of how dogs communicate as a species. Dogs have glands in their paws that release pheromones that trigger social interaction with other dogs. These pheromones from dogs’ feet last longer than the scent of urine or feces, making them more effective as a communication tool. To answer this mornings trivia poll, the breed of the animated dog, Scooby Doo, is… a Great Dane, one of the biggest dog breeds! 😯 The character was created by Iwao Takamoto, animator at Hanna-Barbera Productions. Takamoto studied the breed when developing the character, but took plenty of liberties for the fictional series. Personality-wise, Great Danes are known as the “Apollo of dogs” due to their stately grace and elegance. The breed is easygoing, with plenty of poise. That doesn’t sound anything like our Scooby Doo! There are, however, several similarities to the Scooby Doo dog character and that of a Great Dane, besides the size. The Great Dane is high energy, affectionate, playful, and is a sweet and lovable “gentle giant”; that definitely sounds a bit more like our favorite childhood character…and our lovable Danes here at Dogtopia! 🧡 (Featuring Tillie)

Trivia Time! If you chose “sit” as the most common training command taught to dogs…you got it! 🤩 The sit command is usually the first command people teach their dogs. It seems pretty basic, but it can play an important role in managing unwanted behaviors. For instance, a dog can’t sit and jump at the same time. By training your dog to sit, you’ve begun the work needed to prevent it from jumping. Also, training your dog to sit can help it settle down and relax when needed. Many dog trainers consider this the most teachable command because the dog is essentially performing a more natural act. As such, this is a transition command to boost a dog’s cooperativeness before moving on to other, more difficult commands. Today we’re showcasing how quickly Pongo has grown! 🥹 He started in the Toybox as the cutest lil puppy and now, just two months later, he’s grown SO much and has graduated into playing in the Romper room.
