The Clergy Corner as taken from the 5/26/24 bulletin: One of the complaints people often have about Mass is that they “don’t get anything out of it”. This mindset often leaves us thinking that we need to be entertained or receive something whenever we go to Mass. The best way to combat this is by getting to Mass EARLY, about 10 minutes or so. This allows one to settle in and be able to get focused on what is about to happen. Just like when we exercise, we wouldn’t just jump immediately in to it, but we would stretch first. So, it is the same in the Spiritual Life. It is vitally important to refrain from having unnecessary conversations while in the Church. There have been complaints about the volume of noise, particularly before the 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM Masses. Our Greeters and Ushers have been asked to close the doors between the gathering space and the Church to prevent the noise from the gathering space going in to the Church. Please remember, this might be the only time during the week when one is able to be quiet, to talk to Our Lord in prayer, so we need to be mindful of those around us. Like anything in life, if we take the time to prepare, to engage, to follow along, to reflect, our experience at Mass, and in the spiritual life will grow us closer to the Lord. Just sitting in Mass, on our phones, reading the bulletin, or vaguely paying attention isn’t going to help us get to heaven. But being intentional about our relationship with the Lord, taking part in the Sacramental life of the Church, receiving communion worthily, partaking in devotions (like the rosary, novena, spiritual readings, etc.) all aid us in our growth but as individuals, and the parish as a whole. And if have any questions, always feel free to ask your priest. - Fr. Nilsen #setonabsecon #setonabseconcorner #clergycorner #southjerseycatholics #dioceseofcamden #camdendiocese

The JOY was palpable at yesterday’s celebration of Flores de Mayo. What a gift to bring this to our country and OUR parish. “Flores de Mayo, or “Flowers of May”, is a Catholic festival in the Philippines that takes place in May to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. The festival includes daily prayers, floral offerings, and processions that culminate in the Santacruzan, a reenactment of Queen Helena’s search for the True Cross. The festival originated from the influence of the Spaniards, who tried to instill devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary in children” #setonabsecon #catholicfilipino #santacruzan #floresdemayo #floresdemayo2024 #dioceseofcamden #camdendiocese #SouthJerseyCatholics #catholicstarherald

The Clergy Corner as taken from the 5/19/24 bulletin: Happy Birthday! The Solemnity of Pentecost recognizes the sometimes overlooked third member of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Celebrating the Holy Spirits role in launching the Church, Pentecost takes place on the seventh Sunday (50th day) after Easter. It follows the Ascension, where Jesus ascended into heaven and was no longer physically present with his disciples. Before he left his disciples, Jesus told them “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Through the Holy Spirits descent as a mighty wind, sparking tongues of fire above them, the disciples recognized that Jesus was indeed with them, baptizing them with the Holy Spirit and strengthening their mission. We learn of Pentecost in the Christian tradition in Acts of the Apostles. In the first chapter of Acts, Jesus tells of sending the Holy Spirit onto his disciples: While meeting with them he asked them not to depart from Jerusalem but wait for “The promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:4-5) Jesus went on to tell them the “Great Commission,” in his final words before ascending to heaven, “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The next chapter of Acts contains the fulfillment of Jesus’ words. As the disciples gathered in the upper room with others (A group of about 120 in total) the Holy Spirit descended on them. Those gathered saw this as their baptism “With the Holy Spirit,” as Jesus had promised and recognized this as their commissioning to be Jesus’ witness “to the ends of the earth.” This is why Pentecost is known as the birth of the Church. Link in bio for complete Clergy Corner as taken from the 5/12/24 bulletin: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s ascension into heaven. The article 6 of the profession of faith teaches, “He ascended into Heaven and is Seated at the Right Hand of God the Father.” The ascension of Jesu is part of the Pachal mystery: Jesus of Nazareth, victorious over sin and death, returns to God and fully reveals his identity as the Son of God. Ascension is his “glorification” and “exaltation.” The death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, as well as the coming of the Spirit, are integral moments in a single saving act. …. The Holy Father asks us: “Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, no limits: he sends us to everyone. The Gospel is for everyone, not just for some. It is not only for those who seem closer to us, more receptive, more welcoming. It is for everyone.” Let’s invite people to the Body of Christ, which is the Catholic Church. Physically, Christ is no longer with us. But his work of evangelization goes on. And it goes on in and through us— for we are his living witnesses.  - Fr. Link in bio to the complete Clergy Corner as taken from the 5/4/24 bulletin: ....... Real love, Christ’s kind of love, is not a feeling but an act of the will, a decision, a commitment to act for the benefit of another no matter how we fell about that individual person. Christian love is a decision, a commitment to do whatever will serve a person’s spiritual benefit, whether we like that individual or not. We are to live on in Christ’s love, to love one another as he has loved us, to obey Christ as he obeyed the Father, and to lay down our lives for one another as he laid down his life for us. The measure of love is Jesus. If we are to love as God loves, we must strive to love in the concrete, not just in words nor empty platitudes and abstraction. Fulfilling the commandment of love draws us into the family of God. In the evening of life, we will not be judged by our weaknesses or our faults but on the amount of love we have shown. Therefore, let us love one another. Christian love produces in our hearts a profound sense of joy. Joy is not a pleasure which quickly passes or with which we become bored. The joy given by Jesus’ love is lasting. This joy is a sign and foretaste of the kingdom of God. By loving God and one another in imitation of Jesus, we are already drawing the curtain on the old eon and raising the curtain on the new eon, when we shall see him as he is. - Fr. Cosme #setonabsecon #setonabseconcorner #clergycorner #southjerseycatholics #dioceseofcamden #camdendiocese

The Clergy Corner as taken from the 4/28/24 bulletin: One of the strongest symbols we get during the Easter season is Holy Water. But Holy Water is more than just a symbol, as it is what the Church calls a sacramental. A sacramental is a sacred action or thing, established by Christ and His Church, to obtain various corporal or spiritual effects by the Church’s prayer. The are several different kinds of sacramentals, such as prayers or object, and some can only be blessed by a Bishop, some are blessed only by a priest, and others by either a priest or deacon. When we walk into Church, we make use of Holy Water to remind us of our Baptism, when original sin was washed away, and we became members of Christ’s Church. We should keep Holy Water at home, and make frequent use of it, to protect against evil spirits. Holy Water, along with the other sacramentals, help us to obtain graces, remit venial sins for which we repent, drive out demons, cure or relieve sickness, end diseases, famine, disasters, etc., as well as other effects. This is why it’s so important to have a priest bless your home with Holy Water. It’s not just a superstition but helps to protect us against evil in the world. Along with exorcised and blessed salt, the water that is used for Holy Water ought to be exorcised and blessed and mixed together to make Holy Water. We are reminded that water was a key part throughout salvation history, and even today, we are called to make use of it often to protect us in the life, remind us of our baptism, and to sanctify our lives throughout the day. - Fr. Nilsen #setonabsecon #setonabseconcorner #clergycorner #southjerseycatholics #dioceseofcamden #camdendiocese

The Clergy Corner as taken from the 4/21/24 bulletin: When does Easter officially End? As Catholics we recognize Easter – When Jesus rose from the dead after sacrificing his life for all of humanity – as the first Sunday after the full moon on or after the spring equinox. But, as it turns out, we can continue saying “Happy Easter” into May or some years into June. Easter lasts for a total of 50 days, from Easter Sunday until the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles. This year, 2024, Easter was on March 31 and runs until Pentecost Sunday May 19. As Catholics we observe Easter in different stages. Easter Sunday is the greatest day of the year, which marks the start of the “Easter octave”, or the eight day stretch from the first to the second Sunday of Easter. The Church celebrates each of these eight days as solemnities of the Lord – a direct extension of Easter Sunday. The entire Easter season lasts 50 days and includes the solemnity of the Ascension of Christ, which falls on the 40th day of Easter and ends with Pentecost, which is derived from the Greek word “pentecoste”, meaning “50th”. “The 50 days from Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost Sunday are celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, indeed as one ‘great Sunday” according to the “United States Conference of Catholic Bishops”. “These are the days above all others in which the ‘Alleluia’ is sung.” The USCCB calls Easter “the most important of all Liturgical times.” It celebrates Jesus’ victory over sin and death, and salvation for all of mankind.
