When I was a child, a man stopped me when I was walking home from school through town. He took my hand and pressed fingers in the center of my palm then, with his other hand, he folded my fingers over my palm to form a fist. He said, I placed an invisible silver dollar in your hand. Take it home and put it under your pillow. In the morning, it will become visible but only if you have faith, if you believe in magic and don’t look for it. Don’t open your hand, just believe. Your belief is also magic and it will help the silver dollar appear. I walked home clenching my right fist. I placed my left hand, like a lid over top of it to be sure my invisible silver dollar didn’t slip out. At home, I shot passed my father in the kitchen, shouting I have an invisible silver dollar I have to put it under my pillow. I rushed up stairs to my bedroom and carefully emptied the invisible dollar onto the bed under the pillow. Magic requires our belief in magic. And I believed the entire six blocks home. I held it. I was careful. Here is what I didn’t know, what the man in the street knew, magic includes others! All night I dreamt that silver dollar falling out of my hands. All night I walked in my dreams and I opened my fingers and the invisible spilled out, flew off, or leaked from my fingers. In the morning, when I lifted my pillow, it was there. Real. I had believed and I went to find my father. I showed him. And he smiled. And he shared my delight. Magic is others. I know now the magic was my father hearing I had an invisible dollar and seeing what it meant to me to believe in magic, and wanting to keep this alive in me, got a silver dollar and put it under my pillow that night. This fall I’m offering the 1st moveable feast retreat in Tuscany at Agriturismo La Foresteria outside Arezzo, Italy. I’ve been dreaming of doing something like this since Noepe ended. I have to remind myself that writing doesn’t just happen. Yes, sometimes I’m inspired to write and I dash off a poem or essay, but mostly writing needs me to prepare. Like running a 100 yard dash needs me to stretch and warm up before sprinting, writing requires some stretching and warming up. I have to remember to give myself time to move on the page. I’m not just going to start out of the blocks at full speed. Don’t get frustrated, I tell myself. Loosen up. Give yourself time to warm up the writing muscles. Jog in place.
