According to a recent article in Travel Weekly, almost as suddenly as DEI programs became a corporate must, a backlash has seen a wave of challenges and lawsuits to those policies. The article goes on to note the difficultly to quantify whether companies in travel have pulled back on their DEI programs; however, a 2023 study found that, overall, the number of companies without DEI programs in place increased 33% since 2020 but does not single out travel. The @leaskdaleloop, in Durham Region, is a shiny example of a multi-stakeholder route development done right! Launched in 2021, the Leaskdale Loop was the brainchild of a few neighbouring independent businesses who came together to help each other out, offering ideas to their visitors as to what else they could see, do and experience when they arrived - i.e. each other's businesses! Now in its fourth year, with 11 participating businesses, not only have they collectively increased visitation (and sales!) to the region, they have also developed relationships and fostered community engagement. Through collaboration, idea sharing and program assistance, the Leaskdale Loop has continued to grow stronger year after year. Their 2024 season kicks off this Saturday, May 11 and runs through October 12, on the second Saturday of every month, and returns for an Artisan Christmas Market Crawl during the holiday season.
