I’ve always tried to avoid national boundaries and being defined as any “one” thing. I’ve always prided myself on a burning need to belong to many different cultures. And so this lead me to explore my own ancestry and DNA. Check out the results! Turns out I have DNA links to almost all the countries and colleagues I work with now. Isn’t that amazing? My ancestors sure were an adventurous lot! I wonder, if we all did a DNA test, and we realised how many mixes we have, would the world be a better place?
My dad and mom were music fanatics, and when he died, my dad had hundreds of LPs in his collection. Here’s a teeny tiny taste. My musical influences were everything from the classics, folk, rocknroll, jazz, country, rock, musicals, movie soundtracks, pop, even Bawdy sea shanties! Should I get myself a turntable?
Covid19 has driven home what musicians have always known. How undervalued we are. And yet we will always make music. Makes me sad that people count on that and take advantage of it :-( I wrote this in 2018, and I didn’t realise just how much worse it would get for full time musicians in the time of COVID19. The Unsung Musician (C) Deborah Mannas Music is a poor paymaster in monetary terms that is so with this career path disaster why do musicians still persist ten thousand hours perfecting a thing useless for rent or food or existence yet we’re taught from small to read and sing and play musical instruments I never understood dad’s paranoia that I’d forgo a higher education to become some band’s lead singer... but now appreciate his intentions ‘cause musicians are hopeless negotiators, allowing agents, record companies and consumers to abuse what brings such happiness and demand performances, et al, gratis unpaid or not, like water flows music finds outlet despite slammed doors sadly, most know music can’t be suppressed musicians must do what they love best if artistes had no other career we’d starve and die, and many do refusing to sacrifice ideals to an industry that places little value on talent, art and uniqueness. learn to kiss ass and you’ll survive show off your “assets”, and you’ll thrive... you should be grateful music’s still alive!

That may sound counter intuitive, but God willing I’ll be getting older by the second for a long long time to come. Have you ever found yourself looking at photos from days gone by and thinking, OMG, I was sooo young then, I looked sooo good back then! It occurred to me a few years ago that I don’t want to be the person that wistfully says how good I looked 10 years ago, and 10 years from now will be saying the same thing. Why can’t I appreciate who I am NOW. Right now is the youngest I’m ever going to be. It’s a journey of celebrating who I am now, warts and all, to live, love, learn and laugh! And so I put together a slide show of pics through the decades, check out my story... I once was skinny and wore cropped tops to show off my washboard abs and tiny waist! I’m another size now, but so much more comfortable in my own skin. I can honestly say I feel younger, more liberated today than I did 20 years ago! So I’ve learned that age cannot define how I think or feel or act, and I’d better appreciate me NOW! And of course, I can get younger in my head!! Because of COVID19, domestic violence has soared, as have divorces. Of course, COVID has only exposed the dysfunctions already existing in many homes. UNMARKED was written as an 8-syllabic (iambic octameter) poem, and it was super challenging to convert to song, but we managed it with very unusual 7/8 timing. It’s a deeply metaphorical poem, using rich imagery to connote the romance of love conquering all, traditional roles and resulting powerlessness, and eventual destruction, which the outside world doesn’t see or mourn... It’s dark theme is belied by the lilting flute. Poetry and songwriting... Can a good poet be a good songwriter? They’re two very different animals! Being able to write good poetry definitely helps writing good songs, but sometimes it can be distracting and cause one to overengineer songs in an effort to stay true to the poem. I am a poet and lyricist, but combining words with melody and rhythm means letting go of some phrases, entire lines even! Sometimes I have to move things around and sometimes I have to change words. It really helps to have a fantastic music director @agnes_aduna who gives me direct feedback about what will work in the song!
I co-wrote this song with a fellow poet. We build our future in the now, in decisions we make every second, when time stands still. And then that second is past, but its memories live on. Some lessons I was lucky to have learned early… The third is don’t be a silent bystander, and don’t let your loyalties lead you to let injustice pass. The fond description “loyal to a fault” is the reason why bigotry in this world goes unchecked. Cronyism, Racism, Nepotism. Intolerance. The death of merit and talent is the result of misplaced loyalties. When your “loyalties” prevent you from standing up for truth, letting loved ones know the path they’re on, calling out human rights violations perpetuated by your religious leaders, reporting harmful signs of mental illnesses, and embracing outsider talent, you do a great disservice to yourself, talented individuals, societies, organisations and nations. Run, don’t walk, away from negative people and bigots who spend their time dissing “them” or “those”. Don’t waste time on revenge or rehashing old grievances or imagined slights. Use that energy instead to focus positively on learning from it, making change, driving forward. My dad was an unusual dad. He never once told me I couldn’t do anything because I was a girl. He took me for sports events and practices, bought me paints and brushes when I displayed an interest in art, bought me my first guitar when I was 11, made me dig for worms and taught me to make bait for his fishing trips, taught me how to shoot (yes we had air rifles at home), taught me how to solder, use the lathe and fret saw, chop wood, mix cement... the list is endless. He wanted me to do engineering like him, but my calling was psychology and social issues, and he respected that. He saw the stars in my eyes. Tragically, he died when he was 54. Self doubt is real. The feeling that you’re not good enough. Women experience it more than men and it constrains us. So I’ve made it about a journey of fulfilment rather than public opinion. I find it thrilling to learn something new and execute something I’ve never done before. From researching and designing workshops, configuring and implementing talent management systems, to running experiential projects, to being a guest speaker, to mentoring, to producing a solo music album… and now, to starting a magazine for girls! I had to start somewhere every time! But I know I still have a journey. Often we women find it really hard to say No! Covid has affected us disproportionately with WFH because we do our jobs, we manage the home, help our kids with school work, and tend the sick...at the cost of our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. At work, we take on more, because we have to be better, stronger and work harder just to be treated equally. We must learn self care, because we cannot be ourselves if we are depleted. Think renewal, think regeneration. Manage your energies! Be kind to yourself!

However, I have spent HOURS practicing, I’ve researched and studied how our whole body, face, throat and MIND works to produce sound, and I have listened to and tried to understand how people produce their sound. I ask for feedback and listen to the feedback. I seek out opportunities to sing with much better singers than myself, it challenges me. As a result, I’ve been a life-long learner and I’m still learning everyday how to hone my voice. I live stream at least once a week to keep exercising my voice.
