Introducing Ralph. Ralph came to me after his aging human suffered a fall and could no longer care for her animals. He was terrified at first, and who can blame him? New environment, new humans, roosters running around and Crows who are complete strangers to him. Even the food was scary because all he was fed was freeze-dried mealworms. It's been almost 3 weeks and Ralph is fitting in nicely. He knows his way around, is eating new items, is very vocal, gets along with the other Crows and even lets me scratch his head. Building my connection with my local crows has been such a rewarding and exciting process. It was not easy to get them to show up. It basically took the better part of a year with me putting out food regularly to get them to show up consistently. Then, I gradually gained the ability to be near them without them being afraid. These days, when I go to put their food out, there is often a crow or two on a branch directly above my head shouting to the other crows that it’s time. This, however, was by far the closest I have gotten. When I pulled up in my driveway, two crows were in my front yard. One didn’t fly away until I had walked around my car to enter the house. They then beat me to the feeding spot and were hesitant to leave to allow me to fill their feeder. Crowdad Summer ‘23~ Pics of Crowdad my wild crow buddy. This summer after his two babies flew off to join this fall’s Corvid Flash Mob, Crowdad just be chillin. We’ve formed a psychic connection as to when he may want peanut treats. Sometimes I am at my desk and sense him staring from the light pole across the street, or I go to the yard to find him and there he is on our chimney, I can hear him cluck at me from the tree above, or he may simply fly by and encircle me to get attention. Congratulations to my wild friend, Crowdad & his life mate Crowmum who welcomed at least 2 new crow babies this year🖤🖤 they look very healthy and big & just learned to fly. They still have blue eyes & will need to be fed mostly by dad for another month or more. This family of crows had one surviving fledgling last year, Crowbaby who was in bad shape that hung out in my garden until it learned to fly. I have since became their human “friend” & observe & photograph these family oriented & intelligent birds. They really dedicate their entire lives to the fam and each other & the dad is responsible for so much including constant feeding the youngsters & teaching them how to survive, nest building, foraging & organizing coordinated attacks (mob) predators. The extended family of siblings also come back to help parents & form multi-generational bonds. Ty so much @noemi_tattoo & @watermelon_tattoo for this beautiful #artwork Long story short: 15ish years ago I saved 2 little crows (which fell from their nest) from becoming a fox’s dinner. Nobody would take them, there was no bird-rescue centre anywhere near us (in Croatia, my home country) and so I became their weird human mum for 6 months. They were absolutely brilliant! Unfortunately they needed a lot of care and dedication so I finally found a guy who had a wee bird zoo and he took them in. After a few years I found out that one of them died 😭 but the other was a local star ⭐️. He used to take him to festivals and people would take pictures of him. Awww, my birds! You are in my heart…and on my skin forever now!
