Bringing our primary tale character from Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat to life is a great way to foster a love of reading, which is something we really want to accomplish. Since reading is something you should do from day 1, we at Cloudberry Kids aim to inculcate a love of reading in our students from an early age. This week's theme was Dr. Suess, and as play is the best way to learn, we read most of his books aloud and role-played as the characters. From our babies to our pre-grade Rs, our school was full of characters from The Cat in the Hat. Did they enjoy themselves, too? They most definitely did! Another method of bringing one of the novels to life was the movie Horton Hears a Who, which we watched to cap off our day + let's not forget we had popcorn too! You see, there are a ton of advantages to reading. Understanding what an author is and the value of reading was one of our learning objectives. We succeeded in both. They discovered that Dr. Suess is a writer, also referred to as an author. What about the value of reading? We can become anyone we want to be by simply reading or writing. In order to accomplish learning objectives, teaching requires creativity—especially when resources are scarce. Furthermore, the truth is that educational materials can be costly. This easy do-it-yourself project teaches several skills like counting, matching colors, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor abilities + so much more. Additionally, it can be reused by erasing the numbers and rewriting them using a whiteboard marker. We simply reused use an old box. In addition, it now serves as a storage box for cloth, whiteboard markers, and sticks. Thus, everyone wins! This week, we're learning the letter "J" and its sound. This is our current year-to-date progress. All that there is to "J" has been unpacked, researched, and explored. And all we do is try to tick off items on Little J's box. Practice makes perfect! However, having fun is even more crucial, so we combined the two and made an alphabet sound game. Cloudberry Kids has Messy Monday every Monday. That is, all of our little berries, even the infants, are invited to participate in a ton of messy & sensory play. Blue Mondays are gone for good, with activities ranging from taste-safe sensory play to water play! And it's all about having FUN! We played around with Oobleck today. Oobleck is a mixture of cornstarch & water that may act as a liquid & a solid. It can also be used as a slime substitute. My favourite part of being a teacher is watching children grow through various phases & crossing new milestones. Print awareness refers to how effectively children can recognize letters & numbers. Even if they claim that the number 1 is the letter B or that the letter X is the letter Y. The fact that they understand the notion of letters & numbers is a huge accomplishment for me as a teacher, but also for our little berries. Sensory play is an important aspect of our curriculum at CBK. There will be a lot of messy water play, especially now in the Cape Town summer heat!
