I miss being a mom. If you are my friend and I try to foist maternal concern on you, this is why. If I wince if you complain about your kids, this is why. I recoil from those dreadfully realistic baby dolls - he is why. He wasn't here long. I held him after he drew his last breath. I couldn't have more. His father left. Every woman's nightmare. Sayaka Murata 💙 A few nights ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Sayaka Murata at the @ilfdublin. I’ve been a big fan of Sayaka for a while now and have read all of her books published in English. So much so that I added her to the Contemporary Voices of Childless and Childfree Women exhibition that @millennialemma and I put together for the @childfreehistory museum in 2022 (🔗 in bio). I also mention her and the impact of her work on me in my book, Others Like Me. In Japanese (then translated into English for the audience), she spoke about her dystopian words and views on this world. Her incredibly well-rounded and profound thoughts and her open yet humble demeanour in front of an audience made me admire her even more. I'm glad I said enough to work, left my desk earlier than usual, and headed to town to meet @caughtwithannette and @awritersdream_writes. Whilen her sister Charlotte prevented the re-publication of this novel after Anne's death which impacted how well-known she was in comparison to her sisters, since the mid-20th century Anne's life and works have been given more spotlight that is due. In 2013, Sally McDonald of the Brontë Society said Anne has become more "viewed as the most radical of the sisters, writing about tough subjects." Born on this day in 1885, she was an influential and brave suffragist, feminist, and women's rights activist in the campaign to pass the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Amazing Person of the Day Who Never Had Children: Margaret Knight. From my research, here is a short summary of her life: Born in Maine, United States, Margaret Knight was an amazing inventor. During her life she came up with lots of inventions for industry and everyday purposes. Her first invention came when she was just an early teen. She went to school only until age twelve, when she went to work for a cotton mill to help support her widowed mother. While working there, she figured out a way to make using textile looms safer, and it ended up changing the cotton industry at the time. A self-taught engineer, Margaret ended up getting twenty-seven patents. They included parts for engines and motors, machines that can feed large amounts of paper and how to mass produce flat-bottom brown paper bags — what we know as paper grocery bags today. Her flat-bottom paper bag innovation revolutionized the paper bag industry. At just thirty-two years old, she founded the Eastern Paper Bag Company in Connecticut, United States. Margaret’s inventions also involved clothing. She developed dress and skirt shields to protect from wrinkles and perspiration, a sewing machine reel, clasps for robes and machines used to make shoes. She was not the first woman to receive a patent, but she was one of the most productive woman inventors of her time. Margaret did not always get credit for her inventions, at least initially. When she was working on a patent for an iron a man named Charles Annan worked in the shop where the iron model was being built. He stole her design and patented it. Margaret sued him, won, and was awarded the patent. When she died, her obit honored her as “Woman Edison,” named after the famous inventor Thomas Edison!
