. . . . . #Karate #karate #karatejutsu #artemarcial #innovación #entrenamiento #karatefunctional #karatefuncional #elclubdelamanovacia #defensapersonal #kata #kumite #bunkai #karatê #selfdefense #hikite #disciplina #respeto #okinawakarate #shorinryu

(Approx 2 minute read) Defense against knife attacks is a sobering topic, very few instructors have substantial experience with this type of violence, making it a complex and challenging topic. . Most techniques taught in martial arts classes come from instructors who have never used them in real-life scenarios. . To adopt realistic methods of defense against knife attacks, you first need to understand how an attacker is likely to use their weapon against you. . Typically, we rely on martial arts instructors, the ‘experts,’ to provide answers. However, many instructors and schools often perpetuate misconceptions and fallacies. Watching a knife defense class in a karate dojo, you’ll see unrealistic and potentially dangerous techniques. . Firstly, like most violent encounters, knife attacks are usually ambushes, not duels. Attackers don’t want a fair fight; they seek easy prey. . They’ll surprise you from a concealed position or with hidden intentions, and you probably won’t see it coming. The knife remains hidden until the last moment, when the attack is launched. Aggressors will distract the victim, waiting for the right moment to strike. . A key aspect often neglected in martial arts classes, is that aggressors often lead with their free hand, while keeping the knife close to their side. They lead with their empty hand to shield the knife, and similar to swinging punches, this hand may not be idle; it may point, push, strike or grab the victim. . The distance that is frequently used to practice is commonly wrong too. As knife attacks typically start at close range - at arm’s length or less - leaving you little space and time to react. This small reactionary gap makes it nearly impossible to stop the first stab or slash if you’re unprepared. . Attacks are fast and furious, often involving quick, short, repetitive stabs from different angles. These attacks are rarely a single, straight thrust, or overhead downward strike commonly seen in the dojo. They are more likely to be a ‘sewing machine’ or ‘prison shanking’ motion - short, rapid stabs that are hard to stop due to limited time and space. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

It’s been almost a year since my trip to Japan. I had such an amazing experience when I was there. One of those amazing experiences was training with Hirooka Sensei. He teaches Goju Kensha. When I was there he covered 9 different techniques to generate power and lots and lots of bunkai (kata application) from different kata. All his classes are very structured and organized and at the end of the class he gave us his lesson plan to take home so we could continue studying, very organized and academic. I was also lucky enough to get a private tutor so I wouldn’t fall behind during class. If you are visiting Tokyo Japan, I highly recommend you visit his dojo. I guarantee your karate will improve after training with him. Thank you Rich @oldstylekarate for introducing me to Hirooka Sensei and Goju Kensha. #japan #tokyo #bunkai #martialarts #karate #dojo #budo #trip #vacation #journey #training #discover #explore #culture #growth #finally #dream #sport #sensei #blackbelt #japantravel #dojo #experience #health #fitness #gojuryu #exercise #visit #legacy #myjourney #athlete

(Approx 2 minute 25 second read) In the early to mid-1950s, when karate started to spread globally, the emphasis was heavily skewed towards striking and blocking techniques. . Many of the early Western instructors, who had spent varying amounts of time learning from their Japanese and Okinawan teachers, had a wide range of experiences. Some were military personnel, and due to factors like limited training time and language barriers, may not have been able to fully experience the grappling aspects of the art. . As a result, when these practitioners returned to the West, the crucial close-quarter combat aspects of karate - such as grappling, pulling, twisting, tearing, and throwing - received little attention and are often missing from practice today. . How do we know this? If we step back a little in history, we can see that Okinawa had its own art that predated even ‘Te/Tode’ - as karate was originally called. . This art was called Tegumi (手組) or Mutō (無刀), a traditional form of wrestling that was common during Okinawa’s Ryukyu Kingdom period. Many researchers believe that Tegumi was probably the original form of fighting. . Before 1900, it is believed that karate placed just as much emphasis on throws, joint-locks, chokes, strangles, grips, etc. as it did on striking. . In the early part of the 20th century, karate underwent many changes to make it suitable for the physical education of Okinawa’s schoolchildren. Many techniques were removed to make it safer for children and more practical for teaching large groups. . Today, the reality is that most modern traditional karate has become overly aesthetic and far removed from the karate developed as a self-protection system on the island of Okinawa. . To be effective in a self-protection scenario, it is imperative to have knowledge of all ranges of fighting, as the masters did before us. Therefore, it is vital that grappling forms part of any practice. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(Approx 2 minutes 10 second read) One of the first things you learn as a beginner is a ‘block’. . Typically, it’s one of these: upper, middle inner, middle outer, or a down block. . You spend a significant amount of time practicing these blocks, focusing on the small details, making sure your pulling hand (hikite) is positioned perfectly, all performed with excellent focus (kime). . After practicing them solo, you then face a partner and attempt to block their punch with your best technique. . However, you soon realize that even when you anticipate it, blocking becomes challenging. Your instructor assures you that with practice, you’ll improve and become faster. . Yet, over time, you begin to realize that blocking an attack, only works when you know it’s coming. . But hold on. That’s not reality! . The way you’re initially taught to block is flawed. As an example, have you ever experienced blocking in the way you were originally taught, during sparring? Probably not. . By now, most practitioners have learned that ‘uke waza’ are ‘receiving techniques’, not blocking techniques. . What we call ‘blocks’ should not be considered pure stopping techniques. This is where blocking starts to fail. . Here’s one example; even if you can anticipate an attack, by stopping any force coming towards you dead in its tracks, even with powerful technique, you’ve effectively given the attacker another free chance to hit you again. . In any kind of attack, you should be trying to control the opponent’s body or limbs, rather than going force against force - you won’t always be the strongest - and to reiterate, you won’t know it’s coming. . When looking beyond any typical blocking application, you need to consider that a closed hand could be a grip; grabbing, pulling, holding, twisting, tearing - not necessarily blocking. Viewing movements solely as blocks could miss the interpretation entirely. . When you consider the whole movement from beginning to end it can often throw a new light on what the technique is actually doing - if you rethink your ‘blocking’ mindset. . While ‘uke waza’ may seem purely defensive, that view overlooks several key points. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(Approx 1 minute 40 second read) Within the structured world of the martial arts, a practitioner’s journey extends beyond expertise in techniques. It’s also about cultivating a personal expression - a unique blend of technical proficiency and individual interpretation. . This pursuit of one’s “martial voice” isn’t a rejection of established forms, but rather a refinement. It’s about finding the optimal application of principles within the framework of a discipline, allowing for a practice that is both effective and uniquely personal. . Understanding lineage and the traditions passed down over generations is incredibly valuable and meaningful. However, remaining too faithful to tradition can sometimes be a problem. You need to innovate to keep tradition alive. . Blindly following tradition can lead to staleness. I believe that protecting tradition means moving forward. The parts you protect and the parts you innovate must progress in parallel. Otherwise, a hundred years from now, we will be doing exactly the same. . Many people are influenced by somebody or something that may not be practiced within their ‘style’. We learn from our experiences, after all. . Ultimately, karateka who have decades of experience, who have put in the training hours with the right teachers and mentors end up ‘doing their own thing’. While different approaches may exist within styles, the actual divisions between them can be quite minor. In the end, it’s still karate. Different styles merely serve to help others understand the origins or foundations of a person’s approach. . It’s about evolution, taking the foundational principles you’ve learned and building upon them, adapting them to your unique understanding and experiences. This process of innovation ensures that martial arts remain dynamic and relevant. . Some might argue that creating something new lacks authenticity or respect for tradition. However, the greatest masters we revere today were once innovators themselves. They took what they learned, experimented, and developed a different approach that suited them. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

I still remember my first karate class, five decades ago. Feeling awkward and intimidated, I went through the motions, just like most people do. . It was meant to be an eight week course, but as I started putting in more effort, showing up consistently, and practicing outside of class, it became clear that karate was a much longer journey, and the rewards would be directly proportional to the effort I put in. . No one can put knowledge or skill inside your head and hands; you gain from it what you invest in it. . What still amazes me is how many people haven’t taken their training very far. They show up to class, do what they’re told, and then leave. I’m not sure how much they think about karate outside the dojo walls. It’s as if they hope that merely showing up will allow them to absorb everything like a sponge and one day do what the instructor does. . I understand that there are varying degrees of interest in karate and the martial arts in general, and that’s perfectly fine. If it’s just a “nice way to spend an evening” kind of hobby, great. My concern is what people expect from that level of commitment. I personally spend a lot of time on this, and I still don’t consider myself anything close to mastering anything. . Even if you’re looking for something beyond self-defense, competition, or just a bit of sparring, what are you really getting out of just showing up? Is it the health benefits? The philosophical insights? Those benefits still require homework, study time, and sacrifices. . One of the most rewarding aspects of being a teacher is witnessing a student’s ‘aha!’ moment. That sudden flash of understanding where everything clicks. But here’s the secret: those moments wouldn’t exist without the groundwork laid beforehand. . That epiphany was possible because of all your prior training. Without that context, you wouldn’t have had that lightbulb moment. You can teach someone something, but often they have to ‘feel’ it for themselves. . Wherever you are in your training, there is always another step. Sometimes it’s a difficult step, sometimes it just takes time. But remember, ‘It is better to travel well than to arrive’. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

Karate is often suffixed by the terms ‘Jutsu’ or ‘Do’. Understanding these concepts is an important part of your training. . Many people comment on my articles that they don’t need self-defense skills, finding the character-building aspect more appealing. While each to their own, this separation limits their potential. . ‘Jutsu’, translating to ‘method’, refers to the realistic aspects of combat, forming the foundation for self-defense. ‘Do’, on the other hand, translates to ‘the way’, a path emphasizing the character-building philosophy that guides a karateka’s journey. . Sometimes Jutsu and Do are portrayed as opposing forces. Some view karate-do, with its emphasis on character development, as watered-down. . Conversely, karate-jutsu is seen as solely focused on fighting. However, this perspective overlooks the true essence of karate, which lies in the harmonious integration of both Jutsu and Do. . Shigeru Kimura sensei of Shukokai expressed this perfectly when asked if his karate was Jutsu or Do. He simply replied, “Jutsu becomes Do”. . The physical and mental demands of consistent training expose your weaknesses. These challenges, whether they are facing your own fears or pushing through fatigue, builds not just physical strength but also mental resilience. . Do, the ‘way’ of karate, goes beyond physical techniques. It emphasizes self-improvement through the rigorous discipline required to become proficient in your chosen art. The challenges you overcome in the dojo can also help you to face difficulties outside it too. . Jutsu provides the foundation for pragmatic karate, but without the guiding principles of Do, you may feel there is something missing. Conversely, focusing solely on Do without practical training risks leaving you unprepared. True proficiency in karate lies in the synergy between these seemingly different concepts. . It’s important for practitioners to find meaning in the terminology they use, based on their understanding and connection to the art they practice. . For some, karate’s beauty lies in its dual capacity to cultivate both fighting skills and self-improvement. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

5/16/2024, 8:12:45 AM

(Approx 1 minute 35 second read) It’s interesting that in my articles about self-protection or self-defense, several comments seem to indicate that many people just don’t prioritize self-defense. . Some commenters suggest that because they live in areas with little violence, they feel they don’t need the protection offered by realistic self-protection training. . Additionally, I’ve received comments stating that they are learning karate that ‘will’ protect them in the ‘street’. . Another stated that all karate in 2024 is practicing ‘Karate-Do’ and has little relevance to real-world protection, more to do with personal development. While another said “just get a gun”. . Self-protection and self-defense are topics that often spark varied opinions and perspectives. It’s intriguing to observe the different attitudes towards the necessity of such skills. . Some believe that the need for self-protection is minimal, and thus, investing time and effort in learning practical self-defense techniques seems unnecessary. . However, this perspective overlooks the unpredictable nature of life. While it may be true that certain areas experience lower rates of violence, the reality is that threats can emerge unexpectedly, from anywhere. . Being equipped with the knowledge and skills to defend yourself is not just about reacting to existing dangers, but also about being prepared for any potential threats that may arise, and that’s not being paranoid. It’s about adopting a proactive approach to personal safety rather than relying solely on external factors. . On the other end of the scale, there are those who adamantly believe in the efficacy of their chosen style as a means of self-defense. These individuals express confidence that the techniques they are learning will protect them in any situation, including real-life confrontations. Even if, to the onlooker, it won’t. . What’s particularly intriguing about these comments is that many of them come from practitioners of the SAME STYLE. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(Approx 1 minute 55 second read) Karate isn’t just about physical strength and being the best. It’s a journey that trains both your body and your mind. . A key part of this mental training is self-discipline, the ability to push through and do what’s necessary, even when it’s tough. . Let’s face it, most people can only manage a few training sessions a week. It all boils down to priorities, right? . When I started karate five decades ago, I made a commitment, and that commitment continues to this day. . As I walked through the door to the dojo for the very first time, I was asked if I could commit to training by a very stern looking Japanese instructor. If I had hesitated in any way, I would not have got in (there were so many people queuing to sign-up back then), the place was packed. . My instructor’s message was clear from the beginning: true karate proficiency comes down to consistent training. Show up, train regularly, week in and week out - and be open to learning. That’s all you need to do. And that’s exactly what I did. . The question is, how badly do you want it? Are you truly committed, or just going through the motions? . Most people enjoy getting better at things. I certainly do. There’s a thrill in understanding a new skill, overcoming challenges, and achieving a higher level of performance. . The truth is, becoming proficient at karate (or anything) requires thousands of repetitions. Drills, techniques, kata - these are the building blocks that shape you as a martial artist, all while developing the right mindset. . But learning can be uncomfortable for some. The road to any kind of proficiency is paved with periods of feeling lost, frustrated, and even incompetent. Many people shy away from this discomfort. . The problem is self-doubt. We convince ourselves we can’t do it. But if you truly want to excel, be realistic about the effort required - it really does take commitment and dedication - and you have to believe in yourself. . We all have the same 24 hours each day. It’s what we do with that time that matters. Even today, I still get a sense of excitement and anticipation when I put on my karate-gi. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(Approx 2 minute 20 second read) The term self-defense is frequently used to promote martial arts schools, but do they genuinely offer self-defense, or does it simply label traditional martial arts techniques as a one-size-fits-all solution? . People often discuss self-defense and self-protection as if they’re interchangeable. While there are elements that are similar and overlap, I prefer to use the term ‘self-protection’ over self-defense. Self-protection is proactive, where self-defense is reactive. Traditional karate training, for example, tends to fall into the reactive category. Therefore, it’s important to properly define what we are teaching and talking about. . In the news today, there was a “black-belt self-defense expert” offering advice to people, showing a pictorial of techniques to use when attacked. One woman who commented said that she tried a “self-defense” class, went home to try the (karate) techniques on her husband, but he simply pinned her to the floor. . Those who have been in martial arts for a long time, and maybe those who haven’t, know that it takes a great deal of practice to become proficient in any physical technique. . This is one reason why a differentiation should be made between techniques learned in a martial arts school and those used for self-protection. . Effective self-protection classes should teach a 280lbs man differently than a 110lbs female, yet most martial arts schools teach everyone the same syllabus. A 280lbs man may not worry about being dragged into the back of a van and attacked, while a 110lbs female may not need advice on how to deal with a fight after a soccer match. Different realistic attack scenarios require different responses. . Self-protection training must equip each student with the right tools and techniques that suit their physical and mental makeup. And those tools and techniques certainly shouldn’t begin with typical karate techniques; they need to be relevant to real-world threats and adaptable to diverse situations. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..
