Profoundly relieved that we weren't carried up, up, and away in a tornado on a one-way trip to Oz, we just spent the last several days on a celebratory Alabama adventure. First stop was Fairhope, a beautiful town with towering oak trees & the smell of fragrant flowers in the air. We detoured south so that we could enjoy one of our favorite activities: hitting up a white sand beach and swimming in the Gulf. We spent the afternoon on a beach in Alabama, which was just a bit of heaven. Then we traveled 10 miles up the road to beachside institution Flora-Bama, where we enjoyed our boozy milkshakes while existing simultaneously in the alternate dimensions known as Alabama and Florida. And then we went for a morning swim today on the beaches of Florida. Just because we can. These are definitely the perks of what we do that have offset the trials & tribulations. We're finally now pivoting north and heading back to Canada. We're still ducking and dodging tornadoes & lighting & flood rains, oh my! Honestly, we looked into ditching our glorious beach plan and heading further north asap, except that the storms are rocking the middle of Mississippi & Alabama just as hard. So we've just been keeping a step ahead, migrating further east while being obsessively compulsively glued to Accuweather radar & Metroblue. By night, it's been kind of a terrifying experience of waking up to lightning flashes and torrential rain while trying to decipher what exactly we're dealing with. But by day, the weather clears, and we find some downtime to see some amazing little towns along the Gulf Coast. These are from Bay St Louis, Mississippi. If New Orleans and Key West had a love child that popped out on the coast, this would be it. Lots of cool folks, music in the air, ladies that call you baby, and so many cheerful, bright colors. What a sheer pleasure this place is, from the free Mardi Gras museum at the visitors center to the Ass Soap and blues in every other corner. We were so excited to have New Orleans on our path, and we penciled in 24 hours for a whirlwind visit. NOLA is truly one of our homes away from home. Every visit brings a new treasure & discovery. We secured our same tried-and-true parking near the French Quarter, whipped up some cocktails to go, and wandered around the Quarter & Frenchmen St to see what we could see. The last time we were here was in 2022. The city seemed to still be bouncing back from Covid and it was Jazzfest, which ended up being one of the more impersonal experiences of NOLA we've had. This time, however, things were chill but bustling, and the vibes were right on. We danced in the streets outside jazz clubs that had bands playing in the open doorways. We hit up the Frenchmen Art Bazaar, which always had interesting finds. We also popped into Boutique du Vampyre to browse, have a nice chat with the lady working there, and secure the password to the vampire speakeasy bar around the corner. Favorite quote of the day, about NOLA & courtesy of vampyre boutique lady: “This is a place where everybody runs away to. You know how when you’re a kid you want to run away and join the circus? This is the circus.” There is no more perfect description for that city. New Orleans, you forever occupy a huge part of our hearts. We're on the road again! We had some business in Houston, so we spent the last couple of weeks tending to that and visiting with friends. We said goodbye to Texas yesterday, a state that tested our mettle but always had our back. We have so many incredible memories, both from this trip and last year's adventure. And now we're on a Louisiana adventure! We arrived at Lake Charles and were going to see and do some things, that is until we checked the weather and saw that Armageddon was about to hit. We hit the road and made the push to Lafayette. We had to stop at a big box store on the way, and that's when everyone's phones started going off in sync with an emergency alert for extreme thunderstorms and a tornado watch! We put pedal to the metal, literally pulling into the Lafayette Cracker Barrel minutes before the sky unleashed. Our truck shook for a solid minute, similar to when we landed in Newfoundland at the onset of a hurricane. Not going to lie, we were mildly terrified. But the storm went as abruptly as it came. The next morning, we stepped out of the truck and saw a fence along the CB parking lot looking like a giant kicked in the middle in a fit of fury, plus a small tree ripped from its trunk. We are so lucky and so, so thankful. So today, we explored downtown and lunched at Pop's Poboys, where we split a buttermilk-fried catfish poboy with blue cheese coleslaw. Best poboy of our lives. And we saw beads, lots and lots of beads!!! Beads are joy, beads are life. :) 📿 We booked a Harvest Host stay in Cajun country at Bayou Teche Brewing, but when we got there, we found out that the whole town lost its power in the storm and they were closed. We asked to buy a 6-pack, which they kindly gave us while refusing to take our money. And now we end this tale at Parish Brewing in Broussard, enjoying some mighty fine brews. La vie est bonne. ⚜️🍻

How heavy is my truck?? When I started the build, I didn't realize how important weight was... My truck is limited to 7,5 ton, which isn't much... My truck before the build 5.4 ton Besides the build, you have to know my water tank can carry 280 l = 280 kg. My motorbike will be -180kg... That doesn't leave much room for all my wood, furniture, electrical machines,... So I admit... already for weeks I was pushing the weighing of my truck forward. I was scared. Scared I had to take loads of wood back out. Start over. Make a new design. Cry. But... Finally I gathered all my courage and drove to this weight bridge. Wonderful surprise!!! 6.2 ton! That gives me still enough of a weight gap to continue my build. Yess🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 Such a relief! A ton of thought went into what solution would work best for a bed in the Box. We considered two simple benches, an electric lifting bed, etc... Jon finally hatched the idea of a Murphy bed and knocked it out of the park! The amount of computer and brainwork to get this thing perfectly balanced on the gas struts is something that these photos don't do justice. It is a kit you buy, but had to be adjusted for the Box. Ceiling photos! The ceiling is comprised of slatted sound deadening panels that would typically be used for noise cancellation and symphony style applications. But it worked well aesthetically in the box as well. It's essentially thin ply wrapped in felt and with slatted hardwood attached. This was something I had before Jon undertook the project. He made it look amazing and recessed the dimmable lights into each panel. Corner Details! The front two corners of the Morgan Truck Box are rounded out. Rather than just building a sharp 90° degree angle internally, Jon devised this solution out of the plywood to be completely seamless between the counters and ceiling. The show must go on 🌦️ Preparing the roof to fit my solar panels. I'll have 3 solar panels of 2m x 1,1m to capture all the ☀️ I need to be off grid for several weeks. Of course, that comes with lots of prep. Gert from wire__up is coming August 11th to connect my panels with my electricity box, sooo... solar panels need to be fixed! We decided to lay low on the beach last week. There are areas on the Gulf Coast south of Houston that have free beach camping for up to 14 days, so away we went to chill and take in the full moon. We met a man named Skillet who admired our rig and said, "I haven't seen anything like that since I worked the carnival!" Lol, add that to the list of what we've been called (i.e prospector, tree cooler, horse trailer, etc). Also, we took our cat to the beach, thinking that our little escape artist would be ecstatic to have all of this space to roam, and the little monkey spent nearly his entire stay sleeping and hiding in his cubby hole. As soon as we got him to a city Walmart, though, he was like, "Let me out!". Today marks 30 more days of work before I sell everything I own and move into a box. Am I excited? Duh. Am I nervous? Hell yes. Am I scared? You bet. Am I ready? MORE THAN EVER. I’ve been taking the time recently to appreciate the space and moment that I am currently in. Time is moving by quicker than I could ever have imagined. I swear just last week I said “I’ll be on the road one day”. And now that day is now closer than ever. Cities and towns have become aversive to me as I’ve gotten older. I’ve realized I enjoy my own company more than most others. I’ve realized I want to hear the sound of the wind in the trees vs cars driving down the street. The only lights I want to see are the stars. Tempe is a place that I have called “home” for a few years now. It is a place that I moved across the country to all alone without a single idea besides “change” - and I ended up writing one of the best chapters of my life yet. This town gave me the confidence to trust my own intuition and to do it anyways. From local rollerblading paths to hiking the backcountry, I’ve been able to stand on my own two feet (for what feels like the first time in a long time). This time that I have left is really about appreciating the land and space that finally gave me the confidence to make my dreams come true.
