After many close encounters this season, I finally filled my tag! Not the gobbler I was hoping for, but at 5 months pregnant, I definitely worked hard for this harvest. After some on and off gobbling this morning, I made a move to the top of a hill and took a moment to regroup. Made a quick yelp with my Mike Lapp box call and was surprised to find this bird was right on top of me. I've never sat down so fast!! An exciting morning to say the least!!🦃 I’ve been working my booty off to shoot a bird this season - I’ve turkey hunted the past few years but never took it that seriously. This year I was able to scout more and be closer to the land I can hunt. If you’ve been watching my stories you saw how many hens I have had in front of me but I just couldn’t get a bird to gobble (even though I knew there were a few back there.) Yesterday morning I finally heard a gobble and decided that this morning I would set up differently to hopefully cut him off… And that didn’t work 🤣 I did hear another gobble about 150 yards away and decided to start moving closer to where I heard him with just my shot gun and call. I snuck through the woods to the edge of the field and saw a bird way out that I wasn’t sure was a hen or a Tom/ Jake. I hunkered down and started softly calling. The bird went the other way from what could tell, I was pretty bummed. A few minutes later I heard a hen and noticed she was moving towards me. I poked my head up over the grass I was sitting in and a saw 4 hens followed by a Jake. I knew if the bird came in range I was going to take him. When I called again the hens started running at me with the Jake following close behind. By the time the Jake was in range the lead hen was only a few feet away from the barrel of my gun. Once he was close enough I popped up and pulled the trigger on him at 35 yards! He flopped once and was down 🙌🏼. Being a deer hunter my whole life this was a totally different type of hunt, and I LOVED it! I’m excited to get out and hopefully fill my other tag with a big ole Tommy! Beyond Blessed this morning, if for no other reason than to have punched my second tag on a PA public land mountain long beard in 3D. It was a rainy morning, but everything felt right. After some light calling around 630, a short period of silence was broken by this guy firing off. We exchanged pleasantries for approximately 25 minutes, with him gobbling over 20 times. He sounded like he was moving off, but I figured he was just moving down towards a logging road to make his way to me. He gobbled one last time and then went silent. Patience paid off as he silently worked the final 200 yards up the trail. I first laid eyes on him at just under 30 yards when he popped up with two jakes. After waiting a minute or two for him to turn, to confirm that he was a long beard, the 410 dropped him at 25 yards. WHAT A MORNING!! Didn’t even have the intention of hunting the last morning of turkey season given that it’s Sunday morning and Mother’s Day, but when you hear turkeys gobbling on your own property at 7 am then you do nothing else but put your camo on, lace up your boots, and say a quick prayer. Couldn’t have done it without the Good Lord and my friend and neighbor Brad. Such an adrenaline rush and finally sealed the deal after hunting these birds off and on for the past 3 years.
