I never imagined we’d start a relationship, get married, and hop across countries together. Setting doubts aside (yes, they were a part of our journey too), we truly took things one step at a time. Though, in retrospect, it all seems to have happened quite quickly. 😱 If you'd asked me back then about moving abroad, I would have said, "Never crossed my mind; I'm comfortable with what I've built." Oh boy, how things have changed! Now, we constantly push ourselves out of our comfort zones—both individually and as a couple. We're learning each other's languages, exploring each other's countries, reconnecting with each other’s old friends, moving businesses across borders, and making friends worldwide. “Māori are passionate filmmakers,” - Tainui Stephens. I’m very lucky to have grown up in the South island of Aotearoa, New Zealand (in a vibrant city called Ōtautahi/Christchurch). We are a bicultural society, and the Māori community are among some of the most artistically gifted people, putting out media and stories of their livelihoods, experiences and visions. Here are just a select few that are quite popular throughout the world, particularly Taika Waititi, director of black comedies ‘Jojo Rabbit’ and ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ and Merata Mita, the first woman and indigenous woman of Aotearoa to solely write and direct a dramatic feature film, ‘Mauri’. I try to practice this everyday and everyday I'm learning more. I think it's super important to honour te Tiriti and want our country to become bilingual, using te reo Maori naturally in everyday conversations. Teaching our tamariki not only includes using te reo, but also showing them art, reading the myths and legends, singing waiata and understanding cultural practices, such as not sitting on tables or using kai for play (you can easily buy things like flour, baking soda etc and keep them completely separate from your cooking/baking kai and that way you are still acknowledging that kai is for eating, though we do use some for making playdough or incorporating messy play into our activities). El 17 de mayo es el mayor día festivo en Noruega aunque estar en otra latitud no dificulta los festejos conmemorativos. Es por eso que el viernes estuvimos desde temprano en la mañana hasta la caída del sol en la residencia del embajador. Allí celebramos los principios fundamentales de la constitución de 1814: la soberanía del pueblo, la separación de poderes y los derechos humanos, que siguen siendo hoy los pilares que sostienen la sólida democracia de mi segundo (y amado) hogar. Asistimos cientos de personas entre miembros de la colectividad, dipolmáticos y funcionarios. Camino a casa me robaron el celular, por lo que apenas tengo estos dos registros: uno del Embajador Halvor Sætre dando su primer discurso (si hacen zoom verán mi gesto de ¡qué-frío-quiero-vafler-calentitos-ya!) y el otro junto uno de mis más talentosos exalumnos de noruego a quien siempre es un gusto volver a ver. El pin es un obsequio del embajador que él mismo fue a buscar para entregarme. Un pequeño gran gesto que echa un poquito de luz a estos tiempos aciagos, y que sin duda compensa la pérdida del teléfono y las decenas de fotos que había tomado en la jornada de pleno sol y muchos abrazos.
