Back in the late 70’s, one of my earliest bass books I bought was this ‘HOW TO PLAY ROCK n’ ROLL’ by Palmer-Hughes. I think my favourite thing about it was actually the cool cover art work, and unusually it came with stickers that you could apply to the side of the neck telling you all the notes on the E & A strings. My father was my role model. He was not a musician per se but he knew if you played real hard and worked real hard and had talent you could succeed in the long run. He taught me tenacity, and the unwillingness to accept anything less than my best. It was the depression he was doing all he could to raise 8 kids. I never saw him pulling his hair out because of how hard that was. The night he died in California where he lived, I was on stage in New York. As soon as I got the news, I played A Closer Walk with Thee. I've had the honor to work with some of the best and brightest women in all genres of music, but there's a special place in my heart for Roberta Flack She was discovered by a producer playing with her long-time trio in Washington DC. When she got into the studio for her first album, the producer realized that the trio did not sound as good in studio as they did on stage. So he recommended hiring me, Ray Lucas and Bucky Pizzarelli instead. The first time we met was when we showed up for the recording date. And the rest is history.... I have the greatest admiration for her, that she had the confidence and the guts to say goodbye to her old trio, trust her producer, trust the new musicians, and trust her own musicianship to bring it to that next level.
