Our deepest condolences to our sister chapter, to our organization and to all friends and family. 💐 🙏 Tribute to the late Rita Rodriguez-Utt HWNT Chair 2009-2010 Rita Rodriguez-Utt, State HWNT Chair in 2009 and 2010, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024, after a prolonged battle with kidney failure. Rita provided guidance and development to the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, her beloved Fort Worth community, friends, and family. Rita, a second-generation Latina born in Fort Worth, was the eldest of five children. The family lived in the Worth Heights “barrio” also known as “La Fundicion.” Rita described the community of about 150 families who had immigrated from Mexico as poor but rich in family bonds and a religious life that revolved around a small Catholic Church. The children were under the watchful eyes of their Mothers and Grandmothers. Unlike her mother who was only able to attend school until the third grade, Rita loved school and obtained a Nursing degree and later a Law degree. Her activism and commitment to the needs of the Hispanic community expanded as she obtained her education and experienced the communities in Austin, Houston, and Michigan. Rita was an attorney for the Fort Worth District Attorney office and through private practice. She led HWNT at the State level and for many years with the Fort Worth HWNT Chapter. She was one of the founders of HOLA (Historians of Latino Americans) that research, documents, archives, and disseminates the roles of Latinas and Latinos in civil, educational, and cultural efforts in Tarrant County and for MANA of Fort Worth. In an interview with HOLA, Rita stated her wish was to bring the knowledge and experience to our Latino community for our betterment. HWNT was a recipient of her wisdom and contributions. We offer our condolences to family members Jessica and Alexandria Reyes and Michael Utt. #hispanicwomensnetworkoftexas #austintexas #atx #austin #austinlatinas #austinlife #atxlife #austinwoman #womensupportingwomen #hwnt #celebratewomen

🅿️ Free parking! About Mariachi Las Mariachi Las Alteñas: Mariachi Las Alteñas is an all-female group based in San Antonio that is making waves across the United States. Their mission is to attain musical excellence, to raise the standards for women in mariachi, and to share the pride for their Mexican heritage. Under the guidance of Valerie Vargas, founder and director, Mariachi Las Alteñas consists of 14 musicians who all serve as vocalists: seven violinistas, three trompetistas, a guitarronista, a vihuelista, and two guitarristas. The group has performed throughot the United States: ABC’s Good Morning America; Women’s Mariachi Music Festival, San Gabriel, CA; Mariachi USA Headliners, Los Angeles, CA; and Fiesta Mexicana Special Artist, Milwaukee, WI. They were Official Tourist Artists with the Texas Commission on the Arts in 2020-22, and 2019 SAPicks’ Best Local Band/Artist. In a male-dominated industry, this all-female group has paved a unique path in the mariachi world.
