So we live in the woods right now and, I literally mean in the woods - which is a glory. At Christmas we went to the fab @windsorilluminated in the Great Park (highly recommend btw). Not only was I completely inspired to position some discreet (solar powered??) colour-filtered up lighters in my own garden to create a magical effect across our dell of tall trees (just for the odd party obvs - don’t want to completely freak the resident fauna), I’m now sold on outdoor disco balls. Half way round the light trail was a mulled wine/hot chocolate drinks pitstop…with none other than a full-on disco-in-the-trees, each of which were adorned with giant disco balls twirling and sparkling in the light projections. They had me at hello 🪩💃🏽🪩 After a few turns on the ‘dance-forest-floor’ to the strains of ABBA & Queen (obvs) we moved on but a garden-design seed had been sown. Fast forward to our new home in the sticks and it’s a thing…or will be soon. I’ve actually got form here. This pic was the hallway of our London flat - featured in @livingetcofficial way back when. Small number one had just been born. The high ceilings needed a feature - hence this magnificent disco ball - and my spark had been under strict instruction to make sure the spots could be switched on without the ball turning. There was, however, a slight communication error…so my baby son was treated to the mesmerising, revolving sparkles of disco lights across the ceilings every time he came home in the pram. Worked a flippin’ treat - he was always asleep in minutes for his mid-morning nap 😂. There’s another rather random and unexpected interior design feature here you might spy too. So pleased with this chic, understated blind we installed at my parent’s house (been helping them with their house reno of late). It’s a really warm creamy white with a geometric embroidered stitch detail and guess what - it’s in an inexpensive @johnlewis fabric-by-the-metre! We had my seamstress make it up into a lined Roman blind (straight stack not waterfall) for the tan-painted study walls and I think it looks a lot more elegant than price tag might suggest. Window dressing is always an outlay and I tend to reserve bespoke treatments for the downstairs and main bedrooms. In spare/guest rooms, kid’s rooms and bathrooms I tend to get creative and reinvent, re-use and re-cycle fabrics or vintage drapes - shortening hems is a lot more cost effective than a full make up. Been known to @ikeauk hack curtains & blinds too in past projects. Straw poll time. These are the curtains in my VERY 70s bedroom in my own doer upper which, at first glance seem, well….dated is a kind word. Plus I have never been a lover of short curtains (barring cottage dormers obvs)…blinds or full-length always. However…I actually love this fabric. Hate waste & want to re-use. It’s really good quality fabric and in great nick. I’m thinking as upholstery fabric for a pair of twin, French, single antique bed heads with gloss painted wooden frames (cobalt blue??). Am I nuts? I don’t think so. Got a real fondness for gentle teal and jade colours…they always work beautifully in bedrooms. Here’s one in our last house project. Love this @cole_and_son_wallpapers ‘Florencecourt’ wallpaper depicting soft, Yew foliage in muted, silvery teal shades. Calm and restful indeed. Florencecourt @nationaltrust Northern Ireland also happens to be one of my favourite places to visit when I’m staying with the in-laws so it was lovely to include a nod to that glorious house & garden here. Sold the pretty mantel vase too from the Etsy shop recently - off to its new home in Germany. The lamp base we brought back from a pottery in Chiangmai, Thailand and the mirror was up-cycled by moi (lurid gold in a previous life!) The chest was a vintage find. The quirkiest vintage linen tea towel - prob from the 70s - that I would frame as WALL ART (yes, really!). A mad almost neon green Irish linen depicting imagined fruit, flowers and birds on the mythical island of ‘Avalon’ (think King Arthur/Excalibur 👑🗡️). It’s a Jonelle (vintage John Lewis own brand) design, the colour caught my eye as I strode past it in a thrift shop the other week. So, I’d pop it in a slim, white reeded frame with non-reflective glass avd hang it in a laundry room, boot room or kitchen sort of space. Another before & after from our last bathroom renovation project - this time a couple of angles from the en-suite to the main bedroom. You can see from the before pics it was an entirely new space (part of the new side extension) so I had a clean sheet to plan it all. There’s always a lot of thinking that goes on once the stud walls are up and long before plastering and decorating. Mainly with regard to plumbing and electrics so you can achieve layered mood lighting (not shown here as shot in daylight) and a practical layout. Few points that spring to mind that might be useful/interesting: 1. The floor and bath splash-back tiles were a lovely striated stone design in a subtle malachite green and I think the end result was more of a high-end feel that belies their humble (B&Q if you please) origins. All about finding the tile that stands out and feels a little different and more directional than the obvious. 2. Go to the ceiling with your built-in storage to avoid dust traps and maximise storage. Even the tallest, skinniest cupboard can be a boon in a tight space for storing loo rolls and toiletries. 3. Take wet area tiles right to the ceiling to make cleaning a breeze. The extra coverage calls for inexpensive tiles. We went super simple with a mix of gloss and matt white 20x20cm tiles, available at any shed store. Grout will eventually discolour so you can go a step further than we did by using a dark grout to lessen the effect. 4. Loved my black ‘shelf’ towel heater/radiator. Roll or fold towels in neat piles - extra storage again. 5. If you box in a cistern within a tiled housing (to work with a back to the wall or wall-hung toilet) - make the housing lid a single piece or resin countertop/stone/marble. If a plumber needs access all you need do is score through the sealant and lift. This does away with awkward and ugly access hatches. 6. Finally always layer lighting! We added low-level spots in the shower, floor up lighters behind the bath and LED tape under the sink units (all mood lighting) on a circuit that was separate to the overhead spots and mirror lighting (task lighting). Suppliers (that I can remember🤦🏼♀️!! are tagged in the snaps).

A beautiful pair of 1920s turned wood candlesticks; a charming duo of fril-edged brass planters handmade in India and of some considerable age (check those glorious elephant engravings!); an 80s vibe bell-shaped pendant shade in muted beige with subtle pastel accents in soft blues, greens and lilacs (can’t decide whether this one is Asian design inspired or a little bit Arts & Crafts with all those scrolling florals, patterned borders and blossoms on silk); a glossy pottery goblet perfect for single blooms on a galleried shelf in a rustic kitchen; and, last but not least this fab, vintage brass indoor planter or vase (I have a cylindrical glass insert for the water). Have to say I think I’d use it as a wine bottle holder with ice?? It’s a lovely thing either way don’t you think? And…heavy!! Some fabulous brights @designcentrech yesterday for #londondesignweek That first, utterly lovely @casamance_official fabric stole the show for me - it’s always colour combinations that get me (thinking big curtains, no??). Then gloss-tastic tiles in THAT lilac @via_arkadia I was a kid in a sweet shop @samuelandsons trimmings showroom - ingeniously decked out like a modern haberdashers. Enchanting cushion covers crafted from a range of fabric brands @augustandco_official and finally @clockhousefurniture - an old-school, tented octagonal cupboard in a vivid print plus bobbin bright furniture. Another before and after from our last house project. Originally a rather choice corrugated plastic carport with an old WW2 bomb-shelter-turned-utility-room stuck onto the side of what was a lovely, detached 1930s house. Clearly, the 'before' was bulldozed hence the last pic ( #nothingtoseehere😂). Anyway, this side of the house, with it's almost double height ceiling (due to tall sloping eaves that were a design feature of the renovation) became a light and airy, downstairs guest room for older relatives replete with en-suite shower room and second kitchen on to the rear garden. Great for guests to make a morning cuppa. Handy also for al fresco entertaining in the back garden.The single bed (Ikea if you please!) slid out to create a large double when needed. I still like my choice of strip carpet and the vintage French armoire added a little soul and patina. Product sources are tagged so you can find similar if they're no longer sold. The up-and-down-lighters from @madedotcom were particularly winning as they emphasised the proportions of the space by throwing light upwards. Restrained myself here to a pretty palette of neutrals. Don't think it feels dull though because I used slightly different greys on each plane to create contrast and interest. I wouldn't mind staying in a daylight-filled space such as this? Would you?

This was a project of mine - originally in a somewhat ‘repro-looking’ faux-metallic finish but transformed with deep blue paint and white wash on the carved detailing.
