The North and West of the 79% waxing gibbous Moon which I photographed on Saturday. The big smooth patches of the Moon are Maria (seas), ancient lava plains. In this photo, the big sea taking up the majority of the left is known as Mare Imbrium (The Sea of Showers) and, the smaller sea to the right is Mare Serentatis (The Sea of Serenity). Separating the two seas is a mountain range, starting at the two large craters to the centre top of this photo (Aristotoles the more northerly of the two and, Eudoxus below it) and stretching to the bottom centre of this photo. I photographed this during the night last night. Messier 57, The Ring Nebula. M57 is in the constellation of Lyra, it is a planetary nebula (a planetary nebula is a star in it's later stage of life which has ejected it's outer layers). The star at the centre of the ring is what's left of the original star as it begins its process of becoming a white dwarf. This is the fate of our own Sun in 5 billion years. The blue-green is caused by ionized oxygen and the reddish hue is caused by hydrogen. I photographed only for two hours or so last night until the clouds rolled in, 30 second exposures at ISO 3200. Arcturus is at a distance of 36.7 light years, meaning you are seeing it as it looked 36 years ago. Arcturus is 7 billion years old (2½ years older than the Sun), it has used up it's core hydrogen and has expanded into a red giant, it is 25 times the size of our Sun and it is 100 times more luminous. When out last night I saw the International Space Station pass over. My mount won't track it so I had to video and try to pan using the finder scope. Very difficult! I set up my telescope and DSLR to photograph Bode's Galaxy and The Cigar Galaxy but then the aurora happened. All of my subs look like the second and third slides so, I wasn't sure how the pictures would stack as they were all overexposed and pink. I'm quite happy with the way it's come out. I like the discolouration. I took this photograph of a chain of galaxies in the constellation Virgo. This chain of galaxies, known as Markarian's Chain (named after the Armenian astrophysicist, Benjamin Markarian, who discovered they all moved relative to each other) are part of The Virgo Cluster. The Virgo Cluster is a cluster of galaxies which our own Galaxy, The Milky Way is part of. The galaxies in Markarian's Chain are elliptical galaxies, lenticular galaxies and spiral galaxies. To me they look like fuzzy blobs but I wanted to photograph them because there are so many in a small field of view. The second photo is of my astrophoto where I've labeled the brightest galaxies (there are about another 20 or so visible in my photo but they are very faint). I couldn't get all of the galaxies in the chain because I wanted to get M87 in the frame (Galaxy at the top of the image) as the black hole at the centre of Galaxy was the first ever to be photographed. It was photographed by The Event Horizon Telescope in 2017. I've uploaded that photo below plus an explanation of what you're seeing. It’s disappointing most of my images with this OTA are blurry and I’ve had much difficulties getting it perfectly collimated, but this target was still exciting to image nonetheless.
