🧿))) This week on #AlmostLive, join us for descriptive highlights from @cuartgallery’s recent exhibition ‘The Art of Faye HeavyShield’. We’re thrilled to welcome back special guest Fiona Wright, CUAG gallery educator. Join us! Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time Online via Zoom | Free to attend Registration required: https://www.vocaleye.ca/almost-live-zoom-registration/ (Link in bio) Faye HeavyShield’s work has had a profound impact on Indigenous artists from the Northern Plains and across Turtle Island. Drawing on her experience as a Blackfoot (Blood) woman and cultural matriarch from Kainai territory, in the foothills of Southern Alberta, HeavyShield created a new artistic vocabulary and potent minimalist aesthetic that established her as a major contributor to contemporary art. This first touring retrospective of HeavyShield’s work spans four decades of her practice and occupies all of CUAG’s gallery spaces. It presents a powerful selection of the artist’s drawings, paintings, sculptures and installation works, which are grounded in the deep art history of the prairies and in her personal and communal experiences. HeavyShield’s approach as an artist centres relationality, in an aesthetics of humility and in poetic visual articulations of Blackfoot language — all rooted within her specific cultural context. 💕 This VocalEye Almost Live Zoom event is presented with kind permission of Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG). Had lunch with @johnmkeister a little while back, but that's not all we also interviewed him for Rainier: a beer odyssey. Yes, the John Keister from Almost Live! "It was probably our favorite show growing up. We watched it every Saturday night before SNL. Sometimes, we even skipped SNL" said Peterson Bros. John served as our films local historian, advertising expert, and comedy relief. It was a great pleasure to include him in this film, and we can't imagine it without him now. Here are a few photos of us at 1111 for lunch, John checking out our old seattle magazine collection and on location for our interview . 🧿))) This week on #AlmostLive, join us for descriptive highlights from @capturephotofest’s 2024 feature exhibition ‘On Time’! Our Almost Live host Amy Amantea will be joined by special guests: curator Emmy Lee Wall and Sarah Wang! Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time Online via Zoom | Free to attend Registration required: https://www.vocaleye.ca/almost-live-zoom-registration/ On Time considers the ways in which contemporary lens-based artists have challenged the inextricably linked relationship between time and photography and the traditional notion that an image captures a single moment outside the temporal flow. Through their work, the artists in this exhibition ask questions around how photographs can be durational, provide context, and point to what happens before and after. How can practitioners collaborate with time or make time an ally in conveying their message? Artists: Sungseok Ahn, Gabi Dao, Pendarvis Harshaw, Brandon Tauszik, Aaron Leon, Anthony Lepore, Diane Meyer, Alp Peker, Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez On Time is organized by Capture Photography Festival in partnership with Booooooom and is co-curated by Emmy Lee Wall, Executive Director and Chief Curator, Capture Photography Festival, Jeff Hamada, Founder and Editor in Chief, Booooooom, and Chelsea Yuill, Assistant Curator, Capture Photography Festival. 💕 This VocalEye Almost Live Zoom event is presented in partnership with Capture Photography Festival. Appreciation Post 💕 We have a few extra shoutouts to make this week, so get ready to share in some gratitude! Last night on #AlmostLive, we enjoyed an impactful evening sharing highlights and descriptions from our recent satellite project with Ithaca Murals. Thanks to our guests Caleb R Thomas of Ithaca Murals, and Lucy Jiang for joining us in the virtual space, but most importantly for supporting and facilitating this project. In fact, if it weren’t for Lucy, the Crowder: Ithaca, NY Edition would not have happened! 🎨 To the Artists: A heartfelt shoutout to the artists whose murals we featured in this project. For a complete list of artwork, visit: https://www.vocaleye.ca/events/crowd-source-description-ithaca-murals/ 🤝 To the Volunteers: The backbone of our project – thank you to our Volunteer Describers who took the time to thoughtfully described each mural. Whether you described one or all twelve, your commitment to making art accessible to all has left a huge impact! 🌐 To Community: Your enthusiasm, support, and eagerness to participate have made this project a true success. The possibilities are endless, but the goal remains the same. Increase access to art + culture for the blind and partially sighted community. 🙏 To Individuals: Behind every success story, there are individuals who go above and beyond. Whether you shared our project, provided invaluable feedback, or think about accessibility and public art in a new way – we appreciate you! Stay tuned for more about this project and if you missed us this week, find previous episodes of #AlmostLive on our YouTube channel @vocaleye - Image: A group of five individuals face a large, mosaic mural titled ‘Feels Like Home - Spirit of Ithaca’ by artist Annemarie Zwack (@Zwackart). “When I get Crowder descriptions, it brings the art alive for me.” - Julia Bonnett, member of the VocalEye community. Public art is all around us, but it’s not accessible to everyone. VocalEye's Crowd-Source projects are all about making public art more accessible for people who are blind and partially sighted. In August of last year, we partnered with @ithacamurals and our first satellite Crowd Source Project was born! We asked Volunteer Describers to submit descriptions of twelve Ithaca Murals over the course of 6-weeks. We are enormously grateful to all of the Describers who participated and we can't wait to share a selection of some of the amazing public art in Ithaca, with their descriptions! Tune in to #AlmostLive tomorrow evening, where we'll share highlights from the Ithaca Mural Crowder, joined by special guests: Caleb R Thomas (Founder of Ithaca Murals), and project assistants Lucy Jiang, Jiten Beairsto and Lindsey Adams. Free to attend! Registration required: https://www.vocaleye.ca/almost-live-zoom-registration/ Wednesday, January 31, 2024 online via Zoom. Hosted by Amy Amantea. The virtual lobby opens up at 6:30 pm Pacific Time and the event begins at 7 pm. - Image: A cropped photo of the mural Youth Farm Project by artists Efren Rebugio and Brittany Johnson. QUEEN ROCK MONTREAL Huima kokemus nähdä yksi maailman suurimmista bändeistä IMAX-salin jättinäytöllä. "QUEEN ROCK MONTREAL" konserttitaltiointi pyörii maailmanlaajuisesti vain tämän viikonlopun. Keikka on vuodelta 1981 ja antaa konkreettisen tuntuman bändin mielettömästä liveatakista. Taltiointi on ensimmäistä kertaa digitaalisesti uudelleen re-masteroitu The IMAX Experience®:n kuvan- ja äänenlaatuun, mukaan lukien 12-kanavainen surround-ääni, kristallinkirkkaat kuvat ja IMAXin räätälöity teatterigeometria. We are super excited to welcome Andrea Cownden, @pushfestival’s 2024 Accessibility Coordinator, as our special guest on this week’s #AlmostLive episode! Find out what is exciting and #Accessible at this year’s PuSh Fest! Tune in via Zoom on Wednesday, January 17 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time! Free to attend. Registration required. 🔗 https://www.vocaleye.ca/almost-live-zoom-registration/ Andrea Cownden (she/her) is an independent dance artist and emerging audio describer of european ancestry living on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations. Since completing training at Modus Operandi, she has been honoured to dance for artists such as Naomi Brand, Sasha Kleinplatz, Alexa Mardon and Erika Mitsuhashi, and to facilitate accessible dance classes for All Bodies Dance Project. In 2019, Andrea had the pleasure of working as a sighted guide in Translations, a dance performance for the non-visual senses created by All Bodies Dance Project and VocalEye. Since this rich introduction to the creative potential of integrated access in the performing arts, she has grown as an audio describer through the creation of descriptions for All Bodies Dance Project, Company 605, Arts Assembly, and a number of independent artists. She is grateful for these opportunities, as well as consultation and feedback from friends and community members, as she continues to learn about accessibility and the arts. - Image: A headshot of Andrea Cownden, who smiles slightly and looks at the camera. Our host Amy Amantea will be joined by Anishinaabe playwright and performer, Yolanda Bonnell (@yobiwankenobe), who will read from her recently published book, bug. Wednesday, October 18 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time Online via Zoom | Free to attend Register at the link in bio, or copy and paste: https://www.vocaleye.ca/almost-live-zoom-registration/ We are honoured to welcome Yolanda back to the Almost Live virtual space for this online live reading! Yolanda Bonnell (She/They) is a Bi/Pan/Queer 2 Spirit Ojibwe, South Asian mixed (Scottish & English) storyteller. Originally from Fort William First Nation Indian Reservation 52 in Thunder Bay, Ontario (Superior Robinson Treaty territory), her arts practice is now based in Tkarón:to. She is a proud citizen of the Anishinaabeg Nation. In Anishinaabe culture, it used to be that one’s roles and responsibilities were the identifiers within a community. Yolanda’s role as a storyteller covers the many aspects of their artistic practice (performer, creator, facilitator, space-holder, producer, director) and they consider this role as a way to maintain sovereignty over their work. Their storytelling is a form of Indigenous governance. Join us tomorrow evening on #AlmostLive for a live reading by Anishinaabe playwright and performer, Yolanda Bonnell (@yobiwankenobe)! Almost Live Episode #132 🧿))) bug, a live reading Wednesday, October 18 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time Online via Zoom Registration required: https://www.vocaleye.ca/events/zoom-132/ We are so thrilled to welcome back Anishinaabe playwright and performer, Yolanda Bonnell, into the Almost Live space! Yolanda will read from her recently published book, bug. About bug: The Girl traces her life from surviving the foster care system to her struggles with addictions. She fights, hoping to break the cycle in order to give her daughter a different life than the one she had. The Mother sits in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, recounting memories of the daughter that was taken from her, and the struggles of living on the streets in Northern Ontario. They are both followed by Manidoons, a physical manifestation of the trauma and addictions that crawl across generations. bug originated as a solo performance and artistic ceremony that highlights the ongoing effects of colonialism and intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous women, as well as a testimony to the women’s resilience and strength. ❤️ Almost Live online Zoom events are designed for people who are blind and partially sighted, but everyone is welcome! ❤️ Registration is required for first-time attendees. You can sign up for one event or the whole season free of charge.
