The Rivers State Government on Tuesday dismissed a call on the state House of Assembly by the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress in the state to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminlayi Fubara. The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, who said this in an interview with The PUNCH in Port Harcourt, said the governor would not allow anybody to throw the state into anarchy. Also, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Chief Edwin Clark and other prominent individuals in the region warned the lawmakers against causing anarchy in the state. The APC Caretaker Committee Chairman in the state, Chief Tony Okocha, had earlier on Tuesday called on the 27 members of the state House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to immediately commence an impeachment process against Fubara.Okocha warned that failure of the lawmakers to heed the directive would attract severe sanctions in line with relevant sections of the party’s constitution. The crisis between Fubara and his godfather, Wike, started last year when the Assembly dominated by Wike’s loyalists attempted to impeach the governor. The two camps later signed a peace pact following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu. But they had since resumed hostilities as they disagreed on the peace pact.The Assembly had at least overridden the governor by passing at least two bills that he withheld assent. On Monday, Fubara dismissed the Assembly as an illegal body that did not exist. Business activities, human and vehicular traffic were disrupted in and around Umuahia, the Abia State capital on Monday morning as protesting tricycle riders took over major roads and streets of the city. They are demanding that the State government should review its policy on ticketing which according to them has made it difficult for them to operate in the State. The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said that his administration is not fighting anybody but is only interested in recovering looted funds and achieving good governance. Two lawmakers of the Abia State House of Assembly who are members of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) have been expelled from the party for alleged anti-party activities. The lawmakers are Hon. Ahuama Fyne Onyekachi, who represents Osisioma South State Constituency, and Hon. Iheanacho Nwogu, representing Osisioma North. Onyekachi was accused of making utterances deemed to be supportive of the Abia State Government led by Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party. When given an opportunity to respond to the allegations, Onyekachi’s defence was deemed unsatisfactory by the YPP executives in his Amator 8 Ward. According to a source at the YPP National Secretariat who spoke to THE WHISTLER, Onyekachi was also accused of remaining unrepentant in his support for Otti’s administration. The Chairman of Victoria Garden City (VGC) in the Lekki-Ajah area of Lagos State, Gihan Mbelu, has reportedly been found dead in his car. The incident occurred on Friday, April 26, 2024, according to the Lagos State Police Command. The police said the matter was reported to the command by General Manager of the Victoria Garden City Estate. The 42-year-old was found unconscious in his C300 4Matic ash-coloured car around 10am on Friday with the ignition on and the vehicle glass rolled up around the VGC area. Police detectives were deployed to the scene and Mbelu was rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where he was confirmed dead. His corpse was subsequently deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
