Mr. Malone's 7th period class recently held a Most Important Object in World History debate. The final debate was between Camels and Silver, with Silver winning. North Central College graduate and former football student-athlete Ben Wong '20 has been selected as one of 126 student-athletes during the 2023-2024 academic year to receive an @ncaa Postgraduate Scholarship. The NCAA's Postgraduate Scholarship program, instituted in 1964, promotes and encourages education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative. The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program. A four-year letter winner and three-year starter at linebacker for the Cardinals from 2017-2021, Wong was North Central's first student-athlete to earn College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America honors three times and received the NCAA's Elite 90 Award at the 2021 Division III Football Championship. Wong was a two-time All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) First Team honoree and a three-time Academic All-CCIW selection, winning North Central's Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference award in 2021. Wong co-authored a peer-reviewed article which appeared in the Nov. 27, 2022 issue of Addiction Biology, a quarterly scientific journal covering research on substance abuse. He is entering his third year of study at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. A graduate of North Central with majors in psychology and neuroscience, Wong is the first Cardinal to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship since women's triathlon alumna Naomi Hill '21 in 2021 and is the second North Central football player to receive the award, joining Peter Bulandr '12 in 2012. #WeAreNC #ncaafootball #d3football #collegefootball @ncaadiii @northcentralcollege @vumedicine

The North Central College softball team has been recognized with four selections to the 2023-2024 @ncaadiii Academic All-District Teams, as selected by @collsportscomm. North Central's honorees are senior infielder Katie Del Re, junior outfielder Sarah Lynch, sophomore outfielder Bailey Miller and sophomore pitcher Sam Schilf. Del Re and Lynch are honored for the second straight season, while Miller and Schilf are recognized for the first time. The Cardinal softball program has had 12 CSC Academic All-District selections since 1996, seven of which have come in the last two seasons. Many Seniors receive awards this time of the school year, but not many students are the inspiration and namesake of an award. Alex Brown, NC '24, has had a profound impact on our school community, especially athletics. His positive attitude, infectious smile, and ability to carry on a conversation with anyone he meets are some of his best qualities. As an athlete, he has claimed WPIAL and PIAA gold in track and is preparing to head to states later today. Outside of competing, he can be found cheering on his classmates at almost every NC sporting event. If you don’t know him personally, you might be familiar with his voice. Since his sophomore year, he has been the voice of Trojan and Trojanette athletics on the North Catholic Sports Network. From the regular season to playoffs, he has been on the call bringing NC athletics into the homes of our family, friends, and alumni. Congratulations to this group of multi-talented and hard-working students who earned a Best Student Orchestra Mancini Award nomination for their performance in "Chicago: Teen Edition" this spring. We'll be cheering our student orchestra, also known as the student "pit," at the May 19th Mancini Awards Ceremony. This team of students has been playing together for years. Seniors Ava McConnell and Joanie Zilaitis are steadfast student pit members, playing in every spring musical of their high school careers. Ava has also used her construction and tech skills as a crew member every year. Senior Aaron Briercheck performed with the student pit for the last three years, and, was a crew member throughout his high school career. He is also on North Catholics' Robotics team. Senior Angelica Glasgow has also been in pit for the last two years and is a four-year member of the concert band and a three-year member of the marching band. Senior Bridget Culley traded her violin and demonstrated musical agility by learning the banjo just for this year's performance of "Chicago: Teen Edition!" She's been a pit and stage crew member for the last 3 years. This year, Milan DeNicola joined his fellow seniors for his first year in pit. He is also a member of the Robotics Club. Ethan Lu, is a dedicated junior who has performed in every musical so far, as well as Marching Band and Jazz Band. Eric Zacherl has been in the pit for North's productions of "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Chicago: Teen Edition." He is also a member of the Robotics team, the marching band, and the jazz band; he is also going to be an apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 5. Abby Brown and Drew Haring were both recognized for their performance in "Chicago: Teen Edition" by the Mancini Awards for Excellence in High School Theater. Stay tuned for the final results of all of our Mancini nominees after the Mancini Awards Ceremony on May 19th! Abby, a sophomore, is a Best Actress semi-finalist for her role as Roxie Hart. In addition to performing in NC's fall and spring shows since her freshman year, Abby is on the girls' lacrosse team and enjoys dance, voice, acting, guitar, clarinet and piano. She uses her talents to serve, too, as a cantor at Divine Grace Parish and a Vacation Bible School leader at St. Aidan. Her other recognitions include the St. Genesius Drama Scholarship as a freshman and, most recently, a supporting role in the faith based movie “Judge Not.” Drew, also a sophomore, has achieved back-to-back nominations for the Mancini Awards. Last year, he was a Best Supporting Actor nominee for his role as Lord Pinkleton in North's spring performance of Cinderella. This year, he is a Best Actor nominee for his role as Billy Flynn in Chicago. In addition to performing in both of North's shows as a freshman and a sophomore, Drew is an NC Scholar and on the NC Volleyball team. Embarking on an extraordinary educational adventure, a select group of Mrs. Benzing's Anatomy students recently observed an open heart surgery. Together, they witnessed the intricacies of an aortic valve replacement procedure performed on a resilient 73-year-old patient. In addition to observing the surgery, the students had the unique opportunity to engage in conversations with the director of transplant and the head surgeon leading the operation. Following the surgery, the students felt compelled to visit the chapel. Despite missing their regular mass at NC, they came together in a moment of reflection and solidarity. Joined in prayer, they extended heartfelt wishes for the patient's swift recovery, solace for his family, and strength for the dedicated surgical team. @ncc_softball has been recognized with four selections to the 2024 All @cciw_athletics Teams, as voted on by the conference's nine head coaches. Pitcher Juliana Maude was voted to the #allconference First Team and named the CCIW's First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year. Maude went 5-2 with a 1.16 earned-run average in eight starts against conference foes and owns a 12-4 overall record with a 1.36 ERA and 99 strikeouts this season. Infielders Katie Del Re and Talia Torosian and pitcher Sam Schilf were voted to the All-CCIW Second Team. Del Re is a three-time All-Conference honoree, while Torosian makes the list for a second straight year and Schilf is a first-time selection. The Cardinals (28-10) are the No. 3 seed in this week's CCIW Tournament at Illinois Wesleyan. North Central faces No. 6 seed North Park Thursday at 2pm in the single-elimination first round.
