Our partners at Juntos Podemos are helping teenagers who have dropped out of high school through a new night school program. Offering supplemental education in the evenings accommodates students’ commitments to caring for their families and earning income. Graduating high school is an important step in reaching for brighter futures and breaking cycles of generational poverty. Through our Education 4 Change program, we currently employ 25 teachers and tutors across the 6 countries where we serve. The children we serve in Ecuador through our partnership with Dame Tu Mano experience daily hardships like instability in their homes, violence in their communities, and teenage pregnancy. Many of them, even as young as age five, are becoming desensitized to the harsh realities of their lives. Witnessing the adults around them being killed, incarcerated, and facing abuse in their homes is normal. As Unity 4 Orphans expands its reach in 2024, our Board of Directors is pivotal in steering us toward unprecedented impact. Their diverse expertise fortifies our foundation, enabling us to support more children in need than ever before. Thanks to the leadership of Board Chairman Paul Polakowski III, U4O is set to achieve all of our ambitious goals. With a target of raising $1 million, we aim to increase our support by 80% and extend our programs to children in two new countries. We believe that meeting a child’s emotional needs is essential to helping them heal from past traumas and abuses. Through counseling, therapy, and individualized support, children like Alejandro are given a real pathway to move forward with their lives. Alejandro is a teenager with three younger siblings, all of whom were brought to one of our partner orphanages in Tijuana after being abandoned by their single mother. When Alejandro arrived he was confrontational and disinterested in engaging with his peers or the orphanage staff. Knowing what he had been through and the abuses he witnessed, our program counselor Yoly worked with him to build his self-esteem. Alejandro now enjoys his special time with Yoly and eagerly reports to her how he is doing in school. He also no longer constantly argues with his siblings. Bringing transformation to vulnerable children is at the heart of our mission, and we love to share their stories with you! Lupita arrived at one of our partner orphanages in Tijuana, Mexico unable to communicate with orphanage staff. She cried uncontrollably and refused to participate in activities. Our program counselor, Yoly, began working with her and singled her out for special one-on-one time. During their time together, Lupita began to understand how to work through her emotions and see herself as a beloved child of God. Globally, over 45 million children under five years old are severely hungry. This March, during National Nutrition Month, we will be highlighting the importance of our program, Nutrition 4 Change. For families facing the challenges of poverty, access to nutritious food is a critical issue, impacting not only physical health but also various other aspects of their lives. We recognize this intersectionality and have taken proactive steps with our Nutrition 4 Change program to address the nutritional needs of the children and families we serve. Our local partner BLAST 4 Kids is a San Diego nonprofit empowering underprivileged children by providing educational support. The relationships built extend outside of the school-based program. Program Director Ryan Najimy took on an additional role in the past few years - basketball coach. What is primarily an after-school haven where children facing adversity can receive tutoring and snacks, BLAST also fosters teamwork and confidence and provides crucial mentorship through basketball. Popoyo is a small coastal village with limited opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. As tourism continues to grow in the area, teaching the children to speak English will set them up for success in school and future employment.
