As some of you may know, the kantele is Finland's national instrument. According to legend, the eternal sage Väinämöinen crafted the first kantele from the bones of a giant pike. Historians believe it was invented around two thousand years ago. I went to the Topanga banjo and fiddle festival yesterday. I had a great time but I didn't manage to get any pictures or videos due to technical issues with my phone. I sold a tenor guitar, made some new friends, and ran into @phoebesandersbanjo who won second place in the banjo contest. I also met @odinscottcoleman, who won first place. Some close-ups also make for a chance to see more of the details on the Carcavelos top, including the marks from where the wine barrel was scraped and cleaned around 250 years ago in the Marquis of Pombal's wine cellar. You find new marks, new details, new depth to the colouration from the wine with every look, and each stroke or notch or mark is another thread of this wood's storied past. Accompanying the talk will be a rare screening of Peavy’s films, depicting translucent, biomorphic forms set to mesmerizing narration, as well as a display of Peavy’s intricate masks in PRS’s historic Manly P. Hall Library. Guided by an entity named Lacamo who identified as coming from other realms and “travelled on an etherian ship”, Peavy made and wore elaborate masks that represented a composite view of humanity to communicate with the unseen world. @label_curatorial_ @outlyingshapes Finally, inspired by the final layers of Peavy’s paintings which, completed in the 1980s, present abstracted crystalline formations the evening will conclude with a very special performance by acclaimed Czech sound artist Lenka Morávková. This is a very special one. The neck is made from a silver maple tree that my cousin had to cut down the soundboard and fret board are made from an exotic tree in Africa unknown to the American market called "mininga" (I think I spelled it right😅). I inherited this wood from my job at Christian renewal center. They inherited the lumber from missionaries that brought the wood back to America from their adventures.
