Today's lesson in Dad Rock From the 90's and Early Aughts is a band who's name was suggested by Rob Zombie according to the Interwebs "Ultraspank" I've always thought this bands name was why they never caught on.. The name sounds like a Party Band name Frat Metal if you will This isn't party rock at all Its very moody and atmospheric It has a few trappings of the era it was made in but there isn't any rapping or DJ's to be found This band has great riffs and heavy grooves and has tinges of industrial and even pop sensibilities at times with truly great soaring vocal lines They always sounded to me almost as if a new wave band from the early 80's were the first to discover crunchy downtuned guitars They only released 2 Albums but both are worth repeated listens The first being a self titled Effort in 98 and the 2nd called "Progress" in 2000 The whole band is great and the catchy Riffs are infectious but the star of this band has always been vocalist Pete Murray The man sounds like NOONE else in Rock music in the best possible way Do yourself a favor and look up anything this guy's been on... And as I go on this trip down memory lane, I remember picking up the second Ultraspank album too. This was not in the Caroline, but in the store next door. I can’t remember the name but I do know I just started working in Brussels and went during my lunchbreak one day to their closing sale with a colleague. Anyway, that cold December day in 2000 was a good day for my nu-metal collection. I liked their eponymous debut, but Progress was better in all departments. The band stopped after the release of this album. The singer and guitarist started a new band Lo-Pro. Ultraspank (1998) was the debut album from the California 🇺🇸 based metal band Ultraspank. This self-titled album executed a fine marriage between both industrial as well as nu metal. Here on Ultraspank's self-titled album we get a band that knows how to deliver aggressive grooves while also pairing it with a sense of technological atmosphere. This self-titled album doesn't leave much open space as your punched in the face with grooves and riffs while also trapped in the corners of industrial strength atmosphere. The original name for the band was Spank, but after signing a record deal couldn't use that name anymore for legal reasons, so Rob Zombie gave them the idea of just adding Ultra, and the band ran with it in the process of creating their self-titled debut album in Ultraspank. The album sold well even without much label support and the band would go on tour to support the album often using their own money and tour van to get to shows. The label started to change their tune when their song 5 was featured on a Playstation game, but even that honeymoon phase was short lived, but at least gave the band the ability to drop one more album with the more of a sophomore slump in Progress. On this day in 1998, Ultraspank released their self-titled debut album. It was a nice combination of nu-metal, industrial, and progressive rock. Unfortunately, the album was not promoted by the label, and most of their exposure came from their song “5” being featured in a Playstation video game called 3xtreme. Both the singer and the guitarist would go on to form a band called Lo-Pro who gained a bit more attention. This night was a dream. These photos were taken at our showcase for Epic Records at the Opium Den in Los Angeles. A bunch of our amazing friends came down from SB in a party bus to light the place up. The guy next to Tom was the president of the company. He was the mastermind behind Rage and Korn and the reason we wanted to sign with the label. While mixing our first record we found out he had been let go along with the entire hard rock radio department. Sadly this kind of luck would follow us throughout our career but it didn’t stop us from having a hell of a lot of fun. #ultraspank
