The past two weeks we trained the maternity staff and all clinicians in maternal and neonatal care as part of our crowdfunding ‘Start them right’🤰🏾👶🏾 In different stations the staff worked on several topics. We talked about the benefits of filling the partograph 📈 and practiced with different scenarios. Also, the moyo device, which will help us in fetal monitoring, was shown and trained with. Another station practiced helping babies breath and lastly a scenario of an uterine rupture. Although some of the things discussed were difficult, the staff was very motivated to concur the barriers. All and all the training days were very successful. These ladies are Aminata and Halima, our new theatre nurses. They started the job well with an intensive training on spinal anesthesia and ketamine by Lamin Fofonah (in blue scrubs), who completed his bachelors in Anesthesia in Ghana. The training focused both on theory and practice, with two full afternoons of surgeries. The pictures were taking during a c-section, for which Halima did the spinal. Meet Kirsten Spray, a 4th-year veterinary student at Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and our third visiting professional. She arrived just in time! With our patient count nearly doubling overnight, Kirsten gained extensive hands-on experience with California sea lions, elephant seals and fur seals - interacting and performing exams from wellness to release. Kirsten earned her undergraduate degree in Marine Biology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She developed a passion for veterinary medicine while working with organizations such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) Marine Mammal Rescue Team, The Marine Mammal Center, and the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program. Last year, she completed veterinary externships at The Marine Mammal Center, Vancouver Aquarium, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Forensics Lab, and San Diego Zoo Disease Investigations. Dali is a stoic trooper. I don’t even know how many weeks it’s been, but it’s been a lot since she first broke her leg and then she broke it again. Inside of the cast trying to awkwardly stand up. (The cast was intact). And she’s been on stall rest and she is just absolutely stir crazy. It’s making me crazy too. And when the herd bolts to another part of the property, she loses her mind. Today, the gate was left open (before I returned), and the herd ran into the bamboo to destroy the growing shoots and the FOMO was too much. She does not want to just watch life; she wants to participate in it. And so she was running inside of her tiny stall, slamming down the cast. And apparently that causes reverberations of pain and makes her cry, big fat llama tears. And that makes me really worried and concerned because while she is on stall rest, she’s supposed to be calm and subdued. We only have two more weeks before the cast must come off no matter. And the stakes are super high. If she has rebroken the bone or if it’s not healed enough, the solution is amputation, and I cannot even tell you how hard we have all worked, cried, massaged her limbs, been sleepless and stressed. I know they can do OK on three legs, but I will not be OK. That means all the surgeries all the work all the praying all the energy all the physical therapy all the moving her will be in vain. So here’s to the next two weeks and a good prognosis, her splint and PT. I’m rather a wreck.
