Brittany Stahnke, professor of social work at Newman University Colorado Springs, said being a faculty member in an outreach location such as the Newman Colorado Springs campus is, in her experience, very different from being one on the main campus. “They don’t have a physical library, so I help them all the time in finding journal articles and things like that,” she said. “I think it just means that I have to try a little bit extra hard. We all do in allowing the students to feel supported and like their education is on par.” Her passion for social work contributes to her well-regarded teaching style and commitment to growing the next generation of social workers. Newman’s Master of Social Work program has an important trauma-focused curriculum, reflective of the times as about 50% of the population will experience trauma at some point in their lives. “Social work is something that is both up-and-coming and is going to be a greater and greater need with time,” Stahnke said. “So we are happy to be a school that is reflective of the needs in our society.” She added, “To have all of our classes kind of infiltrated with a trauma lens means that throughout the program, we are preparing students to work with people of today.” And given the words of her student nominators for the 2022 Teaching Excellence Award, it appears that Stahnke is doing more than her fair share of that prep work. Brittany Stahnke, an assistant professor of social work at Newman University’s Colorado Springs campus, was named the 2022 Teaching Excellence Award recipient. One nominator noted, “I don’t know how she does it but her approach to getting others to comprehend her lecture is amazing. Her style of teaching is diverse to meet different learning styles. She is flexible but firm in her expectations.” Another student said, “I have had many instructors over the course of pursuing my degree. I have yet to find anyone like this instructor. She goes out of her way to be there for the students, motivate them and guide them. But mostly she takes time out of her day just to be there.” Yet another student commented, “She’s the kind of professor who is truly invested in the success of her students from the beginning of the program and beyond. She is willing to share, learn and grow. She is willing to help students prepare for licensure exams on her own time.” The kind words continued. I was on a Zoom call with Bu @ancellahermawan of Universitas Indonesia, discussing our next round of experiential learning course collaboration titled “Overseas Project Experience (Accounting in Asia)” in January 2022 when I heard my emails getting busy yesterday morning around 10 plus 🤔 The talk was very productive and we agreed to launch it again with more controls in place, after hearing the feedback from students of both universities! Hopefully this will improve the experience too 😀 Little did I know that when I got back to my emails an hour later; it was an important announcement made by the Provost Office on the winners of SMU Teaching Excellence Awards 2021! Very humbled and grateful for this first Award won at the SMU Undergraduate Level for the category of Excellent SMU-X Teacher 🙏 Thank you Lord for answering my prayer and also my family members (especially my wife @astrid.leung for bearing with me when I was busy with the mentoring sessions in the past 1 year)! Congratulations also to my colleague, Pearl Tan for winning the Teaching Excellence in Postgraduate Programmes Award this year! Pearl has been a great role model & mentor! The local (VV Technology, Bricklane & Onalu, DCI, and Nakama Ramen) and overseas clients (Banyan Tree Bangkok, UOB Indonesia, OCBC NISP, and Genesis Indojaya) played a huge role too in the collaboration with the students over the past 2 years! My Adjunct Teaching Mentor (Kevin Lee), Pak @yusufkhudri and my various TAs also also crucial in managing the client-student relationship; and it is a model that we continue to refine too 🙏 Special mention to @gary.pan.9 for the encouragement he gave me to convert my courses to SMU-X format in 2018 and the advice he gave as well! The team at SMU-X Office headed by @kevinjohnkoh is also instrumental in linking me with some of the clients! We are happy to announce that Prof. S S Ranganathan (SSR) Memorial Teaching Excellence Award - 2020, instituted by BITS Alumni is being conferred to Prof. K. R. Anupama, Professor, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, BITS, Pilani - K.K. Birla Goa Campus in recognition of her excellence and consistent high standard of teaching at BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus. The selection was based on innovations in Teaching Learning Process; Scholarship, Rigor and Depth in Teaching; Acceptability among Students; and Overall Contribution in Allied activities. Prof. Anupama has been teaching at BITS, Pilani since May 1999. She has taught multiple FD and HD courses. She has led and been a part of several teams of faculty that have developed the ME Embedded System Program for both on-campus and WILP. She has always adopted innovative teaching methods. One of the courses that she taught, Microprocessors, Programming and Interfacing was the first course at BITS Pilani University to run successfully in the MOOC format. Initially it was offered across Pilani and Goa Campus on the Coursera Platform. The course was later moved to the EdX and TCS Ion Platforms and offered to all BITS campuses.
