The Moonbird Festival | King Island, April 13-21 2024 We are delighted to be joining the Bowerbird Collective as their Moonbird Festival returns in 2024, celebrating one of the most spectacular places on Earth, King Island, with music, art, food & wine. The moonbird, or the Short-tailed Shearwater, is an iconic species of great cultural and ecological significance to the islands of the Bass Strait. The birds depart their colonies on King Island at the end of April to begin an annual 30,000km migration. We want to change that! We are so lucky to be able to tour our beautiful state regularly, and we're working to increase our touring to more and more places. Sometimes, the travel is tricky - our Tassie roads go through beautiful bush and can be subject to the elements in ways that mainland roads often aren't; and our baroque instruments are very sensitive to their environment! Less than a week to go till Arcangelo & Co! Introducing the band: meet Jenny Owen 🎻 Jenny has been playing the violin for a really long time. As a child, growing up in Canberra, she played every week with ensembles in the Canberra Youth Orchestra Society, and was a regular busker, playing in chamber ensembles of anything from 2 to 15 players, and quickly learnt which music was more likely to draw and retain a crowd. She is now the TSO's principal first violin, and is a beloved regular member of VDB on baroque violin. We were so lucky to have Jacqueline Ward @jackiewardmusic come to sing as part of our Lunchbox series in pataway/Burnie earlier this year. Jackie has overcome enormous obstacles in the last three years to sing again: on top of the challenges that lockdowns posed to the performing arts (and many others), a car crash in 2020 left her with terrible injuries. This gorgeous orange gown she’s wearing here is a symbol of her recovery - she was still in a wheelchair when she first saw it in the shops. After telling her husband Rob about it, he brought it home saying ‘you will perform again’. And with warmth, joy, and in fine voice - she did! Our Lunchbox Concert in nipaluna/Hobart this week features the wonderfully rare and strange instrument, the baryton. In a concert of glorious Haydn trios for baryton, viola and cello, you’ll get to hear @lauraplaystheviol play Australia’s very first baryton! Laura says: “This is an instrument that is just seriously cool. Favoured by Joseph Haydn’s employer, Prince Nicholas II of Esterházy, the Classical baryton is similar to a bass viol in having 6 bowed strings, frets and the same tuning, but has the super fun addition of 11 (in the case of my instrument) metal strings which run behind the fingerboard. These extra strings both vibrate sympathetically and are at times used melodically, plucked by the left hand thumb.
