Speaker suspends membership of ruling coalition lawmakers elected on reserved seats In view of a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan took action on Friday by suspending the membership of 27 MPAs of ruling coalition who were elected on reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly. The move follows a decision by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, which suspended a previous order by the Peshawar High Court (PHC) regarding the allocation of additional reserved seats to various political parties in national and provincial legislatures earlier this week. During the Punjab Assembly session today, Malik Aftab, a member of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), which mainly consists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members, raised objections and read out the Supreme Court's decision regarding the members elected on reserved seats. Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan validated the opposition member's point of order and ordered the suspension of the membership of the nominated members on the reserved seats of the ruling alliance immediately. Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council lauded the speaker's decision by thumping the table. Following the speaker's ruling, 24 women's seats and three minorities' seats became vacant in the Punjab Assembly, resulting in the ruling coalition's membership decreasing to 200. Meanwhile, the Sunni Ittehad Council holds 106 seats, and the PPP has become the third-largest party with 15 seats. LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday suspended the notification of success of PML-N candidate Rana Arshad from PP-133, Nanka Sahib, and gave time to the ECP to submit a reply. Justice Shahid Karim passed the order on a plea by Muhammad Atif of Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) challenging the notification of Rana’s success. A counsel for the petitioner stated that his client won the election by a margin of 3500 votes, but the ECP declared the respondent successful after recounting of votes. He said the returning officer reduced the petitioner’s votes in the recount and declared his defeat with a margin of 2,500 votes. It is pertinent to mention here that on April 6 Rana Muhammad Arshad of Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) was Friday declared successful from PP-133 after vote recount. According to the returning officer, Rana Muhammad Arshad of PMLN got 44,323 while independent candidate Mian Atif got 41,632 votes. PTI leader Asad Qaiser has said that his party would “merge” with the Sunni Ittehad Council if the Election Commission of Pakistan accepted its recent intra-party polls and returned its electoral symbol of ‘bat’. In an interview with DawnNewsTV, when asked whether it was the right decision for its candidates to join the SIC, Qaiser replied that the party held “many consultations” amongst it, emphasising that the options were few. When asked whether PTI-backed candidates who joined the SIC would remain in it, Qaiser said, “Yes, we will remain but we will also merge with it.” He explained that if the party got back its electoral symbol after the recent intra-party polls, “both [parties] would merge” and “remain as PTI”, rather than the current scenario of its candidates being a part of the SIC.
