Antonio Stradivari was one of the most influential violin makers of all time. Since the 1700s, his violins have become the standard for violins across the world. Not much is known about Stradivari's early life. He is thought to have been born in 1644 in Cremona, Italy. He may have studied to be a luthier (instrument maker) under the renowned Nicolai Amati, but if not, it is clear that he took a lot of inspiration from him. Throughout his career, Stradivari made many alterations to the violin, varying their length and width and improving the sound. He also made harps, guitars, violas, and cellos, but he is most known today for his violins. Of his eleven children, only two of his sons, Francesco and Omobono, took up his trade. Many violin makers have taken inspiration from Stradivari's violins. In fact, thousands of violins were produced in factories in the 17th and 18th centuries with the name Stradivarius on them. This may seem like it was an attempt to dupe buyers, but it actually was just to say that the violins were based on Stradivari's violin model.
