I loved the idea of having a tote to go along with a purse for shopping days with my sewing friends. Since I am determined to use my stash as much as possible, I pulled out the Kaffe Fassett fabric that I have been saving for a special project and found others that I thought would complement well. I was originally going to use the Fassett fabric as the band on the front of the purse but after laying everything out I thought the purse looked too busy with it. I dove back into the stash and found a scrap that I liked. But then I thought the purse looked a little boring. Go figure. I found the gold cording in the back of a drawer and decided to include it in the quilting. I drew lines across the purse pieces and zigzagged the cording in place. It took quite a bit of time to make sure the lines would run straight and match at the sides, run along the base of the bag and make the V end in the exact place on the flap. It was worth it. One of my sewing friends is considered to be the bag making expert in our group. She gave me an A+ and asked me to help her make one for herself. Her compliment touched my heart. It turns out that sewing machine basics are quite straightforward when compared to modifying a ByAnnie pattern! I increased the width and depth for the size Small pattern and eliminated the back pocket and side zipper pocket because I did not have enough fabric. My husband thought I was bonkers when he saw me on the computer adjusting cutting layouts and calculating fabric requirements for bias binding. Sew in magnets, fold over elastic, and mesh were a first and I was thrilled when the top flaps closed and the mesh pocket held the foot pedal. It was satisfying to finish binding the many layers - not great - but a skill to improve upon. Thank you for a great pattern and your many excellent videos! I've made many before, so now the challenge is in the materials used. Main fabric is boucle and I used leather for the flap and facings. It wasn't easy. The boucle is thick, a bit stretchy and frays terribly. Working with leather was completely new to me. But I'm happy with how it turned out...🙃 I placed the carrying strap on the sides instead of the front and back. That's why I've added side pockets with carrying strap tabs (same way as it's done in the UTB). To ensure the attachment of the carrying strap ends up in the right place, I increased the side strip and decreased the zipper strips (if you place the carrying strap too low, the bag will tip over). Two large mesh zippered pockets on the inside. The canvas with the Chevron print is just the right size for running around town shopping. I decreased the width of the bag to 2 and 1/2 inches, added a zipper pocket and a slip pocket on the inside. The eyeglass case made from leftovers comes in handy. The second bag is my second attempt at making just the right bag for carrying my hearing aid and Cochlear Implant with their accessories needed for travel. I adjusted the height and width of the Easy Does It. I added a padded zippered pocket on the outside front. The fabric on the back, zipper strips and top of the front pocket is called Poultry in Motion. I thought the front pocket fabric looked like chicken wire and I used a decorative stitch on the back panel that looks like chicken tracks. I grew up on a farm and have some funny memories of chickens. I really was afraid to cut it up but I finally settled on making the Totally Trendy Tote bag. I had to push myself to start the bag, saying often inside my head, “you can do it” while working carefully to fussy cut the pieces. I used an erasable pen to draw each shape on the fabric so that I could be sure I didn’t cut where I wish I hadn’t. Sewing the bag and watching the pieces join together while realizing I successfully cut them was truly rewarding. My self talk became, “you did do it!” What fun I had!! We had 20 students (another full class!), and this one was a challenge. Because this pattern is so different from most of the By Annie patterns, students had to really pay attention and READ the pattern! There were a few magnet mishaps, lots of ripping, but generally everyone had a good time. Over half the class finished in the two days, and most of the rest finished within a day or two of class. Some have even made another bag since! Seeing all the different fabrics was really fun, too. The money fabric was perfect! First I made a Running With Scissors by the pattern and I could not fit my scissors as it had way too many small pockets that I did not need. So I made them wider and higher and less pockets and it's perfect to me. I needed a zipper stash place - Divide and Conquer with wider side and not 2 but 5 " blades" not seen in but fastened with hook and loops outer "walls" mesh pockets on one and the other vinyl pockets. Now I have to figure out how to change measurements on Room with a View (without a view) to fit all my big thread spools. This is the first project I have completed on my new/used Bernina sewing machine given to me by my mother. I was so excited and could not wait to try it. All I had available to me was a bucket of scraps/crumbs. I decided my modification for a simple project would be 'creating' my own supplies/fabric. So, I got busy randomly piecing together bits and pieces of past projects while enjoying the stroll down memory lane of where each fabric scrap came from. The machine sews like a dream. My previous machine was great but could not handle more than 2 layers of Soft & Stable. I bribed/rented the use of my mother's Bernina with fabric scraps/strings she was using to create her latest quilt. The Bernina brand is truly a masterpiece of machinery. My new creation quickly became a tool to carry by crochet supplies. Never giving that project away! I made myself a Totally Trendy Tote in the small size using the caladium fabric and was so pleased with how it turned out that I decided to sew another to donate as a door prize to the local Master Gardeners yearly party. When I was showing my Master Gardener friends the caladium bag, one friend who grows dahlias really liked it. This summer she plans to travel to the largest dahlia grower in the US, Swan Island Dahlias, and tour their garden. I told her I would make her a tote with dahlia fabric for her birthday. She will be touring Swan Island Dahlias this summer in style carrying her one-of-a-kind dahlia tote! I added a zipper compartment to both totes. In the caladium bag, I whipped stitched the base of the compartment to the lining. But in the dahlia bag, I made the zipper compartment a bit longer and machine stitched it to the section covered by the lower border. This is a modified sized Take a stand pouch. I wanted a smaller take a stand but while slashing the size, I forgot to make adjustments to the base. I should have made on in the original size first to understand the pattern before shrinking it. Blue and red is a classic combination! ♥️🩵 I tweaked @patternsbyannie "All Aboard!" train case so it could hold more yarn 😄🎉 I used the denim weight bunny fabric I love as the outer and the lining fabric so it was a pretty hefty sewing job. 💪 Always use the appropriate needle size for the fabric in your sewing machine, otherwise you'll break needles and possibly damage your machine. 🐇 🩵 ❤️ ✂️

I immediately bought the pattern and proceeded to make all of the free ByAnnie patterns in order to hone my bag making skills. As I completed the Easy Does It, Call Me Phone bag, Petit Four baskets, Piecekeeper projects I would bring them to guild meetings for Show & Tell and other quilters asked me to teach workshops, which I did. Eventually I built the confidence to make APFE. I used a special FQ bundle I had put aside for APFE and added a Kaffe Fassett fabric. I incorporated 12 different fabrics, with various colours of ByAnnie zippers, mesh and foldover elastics to create a cheerful bag. I am very thankful for the ByAnnie Bag Makers FB page which I carefully studied to get tips, hints and inspiration. What a generous group that freely shares ideas and advice! In order to ensure my bag would truly be one-of-a-kind, I cross stitched 2 designs (pattern by Valerie Pfieffer) and further customized the designs by adding words from an Emily Dickinson poem which I am fond of. Some of the other customizations are: a pouch to showcase some colourful Bohin scissors which coordinate beautifully with my colour palette, a felt needle minder sewn to the inside of bag back, custom storage in the inside of the bag front, bindings on the top and bottom of all the zippers. Visualizing! When I bought this #tulapinkhomemade fabric years ago I knew I wanted to make this #byanniepatterns #sewingmachinecover for my sewing room someday. Now that I’ve been in my new space a while, it was finally time. My LQS @sewspecialquilts quilted the 2 yard #softandstable for me and it made the project come together so quickly. I love the quilting in this! The texture is Devine! I had enough main fabric to complete the cover for my juki and my coverstitch, but my serger for the scrappy treatment. I think all three covers look great. I improvised on the coverstitch and serger, not following the pattern exactly. One of them has a little handle. And the pockets keep the manuals and accessories safe to the corresponding machine. I love how my sewing space is coming together. I had to refer to my safety pin to keep straight the top of each portion of the bag. Following each and every step was the only way thru this project. I used an air eraser pen which is really a bad idea when you get called away from project for a day. Had to refine measurements. Love the D ring and the snap hoop. Love by Annie bag hardware. I used clear paper sheets and a dry marker to check off each step. This was made for a sweet family with a new baby name Charlotte "Charlie" . Her grandpa is Charlie now she is baby Charlie. They are over the moon with pink, so here it is.
