One of the most frequent questions I get about our trip to South America is "Where did you stay?" There are many answers: From Hostals, Airbnbs, small hotels to camping, accommodation varied from location to location. One place though stood out from the rest: @ecolodgelaestancia on Isla de la Sol in Bolivia. Located on ancient Inca terraces, overlooking the deep blue Lake Titicaca this ecolodge is THE place if you are looking for peace and quiet. But that's not all: Ecolodge La Estancia is dedicated to eco-efficient architecture, sustainable efforts, healthy food made out of homegrown ingredients and supporting the indigenous communities on the island. I call myself very lucky that I had the chance to work with Ecolodge La Estancia during our travels through Bolivia. You can read everything about Ecolodge Estancia, and why it's worth visiting Isla del Sol on my blog. Throwback to snow and ice. 🧊 Not the recent ice storm in Portland, I'm talking about the real ice. The ice that has been around for approximately 18,000 years and is fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field: 📍Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina. If you're traveling to Argentina, make sure to make this glacier part of your itinerary! Perito Moreno is located in Patagonia's Los Glaciares National Park and in contrast to the worldwide glaciers' retreat, Perito Moreno is growing instead of melting. Isn't that insane? 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗪-𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗸 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟰 & 𝟱 𝗶𝗻 📷 Day 5 ended to be our buffer day that we didn't need as the weather was in our favor and we got to see the Torres del Paines' iconic peaks illuminated by the first sun rays of the day. It couldn't have been any more perfect. Day 4 was split in two parts: Sunrise hike Refugio Chileno to Mirador Base Las Torres and back to Chileno: 🥾 9.6 km / 6 mi hike 📈 873 m / 2,864 ft elevation gain ⏳ 2.5 hrs After breakfast we checked out and headed down to Camp Central 🥾 5.5 km / 3.4 mi 📈 119 m / 390 ft ⏳ 1.5 hrs We only hiked 4 hr that day even though there was quite some elevation to overcome. Overall trail stats of Day 5: 🥾 15.1 km / 9.4 mi 📈 992 m / 3,254 ft elevation ⏳ 4 hrs The hike down to Sector Central is easy and fast, so you can absolutely make it back to Puerto Natales in one day, if you wanted. As we had a camp spot reserved at Central, we had the afternoon to relax, and make it back to Laguna Amarga and Puerto Natales on day 5. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪-𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝗣 🇨 [🔖ˢᵃᵛᵉ ᵗʰⁱˢ ᵖᵒˢᵗ ᵗᵒ ᵖˡᵃⁿ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵗʳᵉᵏ!] BUDGET 💵 Hiking the W-Trek isn't cheap! Nonetheless you have different options to spend the night: Refugios along the way will accommodate you. CAMPING or BED 🛏️ While bringing your own equipment is the cheapest option, you can also spend the night in ⛺ pre-pitched tents (amenities vary) 🏘️ mountain cabins (Refugio Cuernos - pic 1) 🛌🏼 shared or hotel rooms (dedicated locations: Lago Grey, Hotel Torre Central) 🏕️ Wild camping isn't allowed! This means you'll need to have a camping spot & reservations are required. RESERVATIONS & BOOKING 💻 Refugios & camping are managed by different companies (adding an extra layer of complexity when planning your trip): ➛-Vertice manages Refugio Grey & Paine Grande (Western part of the W-Trek) ➛ Fantastico Sur manages Camp Francés, Cuernos, Italiano, Chileno & Central (East & central parts of the W-Trek) AMENITIES 🚿 From BYO to renting a fully equipped campsite everything is possible. Fully equipped tent includes sleeping pad/mattress, sleeping bags + big comfy pillow. (pic 7) At camping Grey & Paine Grande you'll sleep in a pre-pitched ground tent (pics 2+8) Fantastico Sur managed camps offer comfortable rooftop tents. (pics 2-7) If you bring all your gear, you'll be assigned a wooden platform or camp spot after check-in (depending on location) to pitch your tent. Renting equipment onsite is possible, depending on availability. Bathrooms, restrooms & hot showers are available at the refugios along the W-Trek, comfort varies. Camp Francés had top notch facilities w/ spacious bathouse & single shower cabins. FOOD 🍲 Refugios offer breakfast, lunch (pre-packed lunch box) & warm dinner to pre-book. Bigger refugios (like Grey, or Central) offer walk-in reservations, smaller camps are more limited & I recommend to reserve upfront (Chileno, Francés). 🫕 You can bring your own food & cook in designated simple kitchen areas at the refugios only as propane stoves & fires are prohibited in Torres del Paine National Park 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙠?

ꜱᴏᴜᴛʜ ᴀᴍᴇʀɪᴄᴀ ꜰᴀQ Winter is here!❄️ Even though this pic was taken in Patagonian spring, it gives me all the vibes living through our South America trip again. A new profile pic was long overdue, so why not answer my most FAQ: • ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴄᴏᴜɴᴛʀɪᴇꜱ ᴅɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴠɪꜱɪᴛ? Technically 4: We focused on Bolivia, Chile & Argentina & started our trip with a 3 day stopover in Bogotá, Colombia. • ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀ ᴅɪꜰꜰᴇʀᴇɴᴛ ᴄᴜʀʀᴇɴᴄʏ ɪɴ ᴇᴀᴄʜ ᴄᴏᴜɴᴛʀʏ? Yesss! 🤪 • ʜᴏᴡ ʟᴏɴɢ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ʙᴇᴇɴ ᴛʀᴀᴠᴇʟɪɴɢ? The entire month of November 2023. • ʜᴏᴡ ᴅɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ɢᴇᴛ ᴀʀᴏᴜɴᴅ? 🚌 Mostly by bus (long distance & night buses are comfortable & reliable) 👣 On foot (hiking & exploring the cities) 🚘 Uber (whenever available) to & from airports ✈️ Domestic flights to travel long distances 🛃 Border crossings Bolivia-Chile-Argentina by land • ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴀꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴇᴀᴛʜᴇʀ ʟɪᴋᴇ? Different everywhere we went, even though it was spring in all places. 💨 Patagonia was super windy (as expected). ♨️ It got hot in the high altitudes of the Bolivian & Chilean deserts, freezing at night. 🌤️ T-Shirt weather in Buenos Aires • ʜᴏᴡ ᴍᴜᴄʜ ʟᴜɢɢᴀɢᴇ ᴅɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴀᴋᴇ? We both traveled with 1 big 🎒 (15kg / 33lbs) & a small day pack each. This gave us the opportunity to: - Repack & leave luggage in our accommodation while hiking the W-Trek - Book domestic flights (15kg baggage limit) without worrying about paying extra - Carry it! From bus stations to guesthouses, at the airport, etc. • ᴅɪᴅ ᴀʟᴛɪᴛᴜᴅᴇ ʙᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ʏᴏᴜ? Besides heavy breathing, luckily not much🤞🏼We felt the thin air in high altitudes of Bolivia. Glad we flew to Bogotá (2,640m/8,660ft) first, before hitting La Paz (3,650m/11,975ft AMSL). • ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴀꜱ ʏᴏᴜʀ ꜰᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ? The most common question, hardest to answer. 🇧🇴 Bolivia blew my mind. La Paz is an unbelievable city, people are most welcoming + the entire country is so colorful. 🏙️ Buenos Aires was the most diverse city with most options (culture, parks, food). 🏔️ Patagonia (Chile & Argentina) for sure was a highlight itself. Hiking Torres del Paine & seeing the iconic peaks of Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre IRL are experiences that stick. ᴀɴʏ ᴍᴏʀᴇ Qᴜᴇꜱᴛɪᴏɴꜱ? ᴅʀᴏᴘ ᴛʜᴇᴍ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴛꜱ! #Smile4TravelinSouthAmerica

ᴅᴀʏ 2 ᴏꜰ ᴏᴜʀ ᴡ- ᴛʀᴇᴋ ɪɴ ᴘɪᴄᴛᴜʀᴇꜱ 📸 Walking over this wooden boardwalk through a petrified forest with Torres del Paines' Hornes, los Cuernos in sight absolutely blew my mind. (Pic 1, 7&8) 🥾 Altogether we hiked 21 km / 13 mi from Refugio Grey to Camp Francés via Paine Grande (where we stopped for lunch). 🏞️ The trail took us from Lago Grey, along Lake Pehoe, Lake Skottsberg and Lake Nordenskjölk with the Paine Massif always in sight as far as clouds allowed. We crossed multiple small streams via hanging bridges with max. capacity of 2 people (pic 5). 🗺️ We didn't see many hikers on this section of the W-Trek, which made it really pleasant. 🌦️ Weatherwise we had a mix of everything, mostly cloudy with some drizzle rain, some snow and quite some wind. We skipped hiking to Mirador Francés and Britanico from Camp Italiano as clouds covered most of the views of the French Glacier and the French Valley. 🎒 In case you are starting your day at Paine Grande (instead of Refugio Grey) you should be able to make the trip. If you do, you can leave your big pack at Camp Italiano and pick it up again on your way back. The middle section of the W- Trek probably was my favorite part. Felt small in so many places here. Can you spot @jwh_beanieman in pic no 8? ⛺ Pic 9: Our destination for Day 2: Camp Francés overlooking Lake Nordenskjöld 🍜 Pic 10: No dinner reservation for us that night means eating our backpacking meals & ramen noodles. "This is the best view of Las Torres" I heard a German tour group whispering while patiently staring at the clouds to move and give sight to the iconic formation of Torres del Paine National Park: Las Torres ⛰️ And they are somehow right: When you get lucky with no cloud cover, and only visit Torres del Paine for a day trip, then the view from Laguna Amarga, the entrance to Torres del Paine National Park, isn't too bad. At the same time this is only the starting point of many trails leading to breathtaking viewpoints and way closer to the iconic Torres, where you have the chance to stand right below the gigantic rock formations. We decided to take the long route: Hiking the infamous W-Trek from West to East with the incline up to the Base of Las Torres as the final and hopefully rewarding highlight of this 5-day trek. 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁? Head to my stories to follow @jwh_beanieman and me as we backpack one of Patagonia's most famous trails. 𝟲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗼 🇨🇱 🚌 Valpo is only a 1.5 hr bus ride away from Santiago de Chile and connections are plenty. 🎨The city is full of colorful murals. 🛳️ Valpo is a port city, so you can see the ocean. 🛗 Ever took a historic funicular to travel up and down steep hills? Here's your chance! 🏙️ Food is great and lots of restaurants have great views. In Santiago crime rates are increasing though, with muggings, pick-pocketing and theft getting on the rise. 🏛️ While the most popular sights represent traditional colonial architecture, major parts of the city have a vibe of Eastern Europe from decades ago and vandalism present all over. 🎨 Best murals and street art can be found in Bellavista and Barrio Brazil. 🔐 Every Sunday is an official holiday in Chile.
