As a football recruit, Quinn Olson's stock has skyrocketed over the past year. Now, the Bishop Heelan senior all-stater has landed on his next home. He'll walk on at the University of Arizona. After starring at Heelan as a quarterback and defensive back, Olson will follow his older sister, Natalie, to Arizona, where he'll focus on defense for the Wildcats. "I just felt like it'd be a great fit for me," Olson said. "They've had a great program over the years and been trending upwards. I can see myself helping their program in the future. "I wanted to make sure I was going to the place that was right for me. (Having a sister there) helped a lot, knowing I'd have someone there to be a role model and show me around." In a video watched live by thousands of students Friday, Demarico Young shared his story as a "proud, deaf guy" who has excelled on and off the athletic field. The Sioux City North senior was one of six outstanding student athletes who presented at Hy-Vee's Exercising Your Character Virtual Conference. "Hello everyone. I'm Demarico Young," he signed in the video. "My name sign, D on the hand. "So what makes me unique? I'm diverse in ways people don't tend to think about. I'm deaf. I'm black. In my past I was food insecure and even homeless." A running back and defensive back for the North football team and sprinter for the Stars' track and field squad, Young has committed to play both sports at Simpson College in Indianola. Though they run in events on opposite ends of the track and field spectrum, Sioux City Relays MVPs Tierney Huss and Natnael Kifle share a drive to consistently shave time off their runs. As part of their efforts at the 59th Sioux City Relays at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City over the weekend, the pair of high school standout preps were recognized for their efforts, yet another feather in the caps of the two accomplished seniors. "Winning the award means a lot," Kifle said. "It means the hard work is paying off. "When I start running, I just feel happier. All the things in my head just go away. When the 114th Drake Relays commence in Des Moines in a few weeks, expect the high school girls' competition to include a number of Siouxland competitors in the throwing events. Spirit Lake sophomore Lauren Travis has already automatically qualified for the games in the shot put with a season-best throw of 42 feet, 5 inches, which beats the Drake Relay's "Blue Standard" of 41 feet to earn a spot among the 24 qualifiers when the events gets underway on Sunday, April 21, with the Drake Road Races and continuing through the following week, with the high school events taking place on Wednesday through Saturday at Drake University Stadium in Des Moines. The shot put field stands to also include West Lyon senior Jana TerWee, as she's tossed a distance of 40-08 this season to rank seventh-best in the state (all classes). Spirit Lake senior Fran Travis also ranks in the top 15 with a throw of 39-02. Ter Wee also ranks inside the top 10 statewide in the discus with a throw of 128-11, though that sits just over three feet shy of the Blue Standard. Hinton senior Lauren Kounkel could also see an at-large bid or better as she's recorded a toss of 120-06 ½ this season. Two former top administrators at Sioux City North High School have either resigned or been reassigned after being placed on administrative leave in June. The Sioux City Community School District signed a resignation and general release agreement for former North High Principal Ryan Dumkrieger on Monday, who moved to the Career Academy as the principal on July 1. The district also signed a one-year, noncontinuing employment contract for North High Assistant Principal and Activities Director Chris Koch to reassign him to East Middle as an associate principal. Both individuals had been on administrative leave since June 12, said School Board President Dan Greenwell. Sioux City North High Athlete Demarico Young has created a nonprofit to help other Siouxland athletes. The Demarico Young Athletic Readiness Foundation will create an athletic academy where student-athletes can go for tutoring assistance and mental performance counseling, according to a news release. North High School will receive 27 new band instruments and 13 new orchestra instruments due to a grant. The grant is from Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, a national organization that supports music education in schools, according to a Sioux City Schools news release. "Being able to place 40 new instruments in students hands with a value of over $57,000 is a dream come true for our band and orchestra programs," Pat Toben, head of the music department and band director at North High School, said. It's easy to see why Zeke Castro was given the nickname "Lightning." More significantly, he will also be one of the more than 1,000 boxers, ages 8 - 40, competing in the USA Boxing National Qualifier, March 18 - 25, in Detroit. "The National Qualifier is the first step towards a possible spot on the U.S.A. Olympic Team Trials for boxers," Castro, who is slated to graduate from North High School in May, explained. "Being in the Olympics has always been a dream of mine." As interpreter for 17-year-old Demarico Young, who’s deaf, she’s just about everywhere he is, conveying messages from coaches, referees and, yes, fans. “I have the best career on the planet,” Habhab says. With Young for two years, she accompanies him to classes, practices, games and dates.
