The EU regulators are swiftly moving to conclude a preliminary investigation into Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI, according to Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust chief. The probe, initiated in January, aims to determine whether Microsoft’s substantial investment of $13 billion into OpenAI should undergo scrutiny under the EU merger regulations. Vestager indicated in an interview with Bloomberg TV that a resolution is forthcoming, highlighting ongoing discussions with other regulatory authorities. Vestager emphasised that the EU authorities closely monitor Microsoft’s investments and the broader trend of large tech companies investing in AI. The scrutiny extends beyond Microsoft to include other significant AI investments from major tech firms like Google, Amazon, and Nvidia. The EU mainly ensures competitiveness and prevents anti-competitive practices in this rapidly evolving AI landscape. Microsoft’s involvement with OpenAI represents a significant stake, with the tech giant investing in other AI ventures, such as French startup Mistral and acquiring the team from Inflection AI. This investment landscape extends to other major players like Google and Amazon, which have their stakes in AI ventures. Vestager stressed the importance of vigilance in this emerging field, characterising it as a critical area for regulatory oversight to safeguard competition and innovation in the AI sector. #EURegulators #Microsoft #OpenAI #Antitrust #Investigation #MergerRegulations #AI #TechInvestments #Google #Amazon #Nvidia #Competitiveness #Innovation #RegulatoryOversight #TechIndustry #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, faces a crucial decision amidst looming legislation threatening to ban the app from US app stores. Sources close to ByteDance revealed that the company may opt to shut down TikTok rather than sell it, should legal avenues be exhausted. Central to this decision is the significance of TikTok’s algorithms, which are considered vital to ByteDance’s operations. Despite TikTok’s contribution being a small fraction of ByteDance’s total revenue and user base, the parent company hesitates to part with its core algorithm. TikTok’s fate hinges on US legislation, with President Biden signing a bill that could force its sale by 19 January. However, Biden may extend this deadline by three months if ByteDance shows progress. Yet, ByteDance remains tight-lipped about its plans. It merely reiterates its lack of intention to sell TikTok as its CEO expresses confidence in overcoming legal challenges, underlining the app’s importance to its 170 million American users. The intertwined nature of TikTok with ByteDance’s core algorithms poses a significant hurdle to any potential sale. TikTok’s algorithms align closely with ByteDance’s domestic apps, making it challenging to divest without relinquishing crucial intellectual property. Moreover, ByteDance is adamant about safeguarding its ‘secret source’ – the TikTok algorithm – from falling into the hands of competitors. This stance reflects a broader concern over data security and technological sovereignty. #ByteDance #TikTok #USLegislation #Algorithm #Ban #AppStores #PresidentBiden #Deadline #Sale #IntellectualProperty #DataSecurity #Technology #Sovereignty #LegalChallenges #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

Microsoft Corp. and Google owner Alphabet Inc. impressed investors surpassing Wall Street expectations with robust quarterly results driven by AI and cloud computing. The tech giants are in a fierce competition for AI dominance, with Microsoft partnering with startup OpenAI to challenge Google’s longstanding dominance in internet search. Yet, the latest results indicate significant growth opportunities for both companies in the AI and cloud computing landscape. Apple iPhone 17 is reportedly going to have a slim version. Analyst Jeff Pu stated this week in a research report with investment firm Haitong that Apple is developing a model dubbed the "iPhone 17 Slim" that would take the place of the Plus model in the lineup. According to Pu, this model will include a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, a 24-megapixel front camera, a thinner design, an A18 or A19 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 6.6-inch display, published Macrumors. More precisely, 6.55-inch screen is what display industry researcher Ross Young predicted for this iPhone 17 model. The iPhone 15 Plus, in contrast, sports a 6.7-inch screen. Pu anticipates that the iPhone 17 Slim will include an aluminium body instead of the titanium used in the Pro variants. He did not provide any specifics, although he anticipates some outward design adjustments for the device. Several of these rumoured features may change when Apple unveils the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025, as anticipated. #TechTalk #iPhone17 #InnovationInsights #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) adopted an opinion on the validity of the ‘consent or pay’ model deployed by large online platforms. Essentially, the opinion comes after the Dutch, Norwegian, and German (Hamburg) Data Protection Authorities (DPA) requested the EDPB to clarify the circumstances under which ‘consent or pay’ models related to behavioral advertising can be implemented. The EDPB took into account the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provisions as well as the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) case law, which stated that in most cases, such models would not be compatible with the requirements of valid consent established under the GDPR. The opinion clarifies that obtaining consent from users does not mean that the body determining the purpose and means of data processing (i.e. data controllers) complies with the GDPR. #EDPB #ConsentOrPay #OnlinePlatforms #BehavioralAdvertising #GDPR #CJEU #DataProtection #DataAuthorities #Opinion #ValidConsent #DataControllers #EU #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan will officially announce the establishment of an international framework for regulating and utilising generative AI technology. This significant development will be unveiled at a meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which will be held in Paris. With participation expected from over 40 countries, including major players like G7 nations, EU member states, South Korea, and Singapore, the framework aims to set common rules and guidelines for the global governance of AI. Prime Minister Kishida emphasised the importance of international cooperation in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI technology. In a draft speach for the upcoming OECD meeting, the Prime Minister plans to highlight AI’s transformative role in tackling significant challenges like healthcare and climate change while stressing the need to mitigate risks such as disinformation and underscoring the importance of implementing technical safeguards for AI’s safe and reliable application. Japan’s leadership role in spearheading this initiative stems from its previous proposal of the Hiroshima AI Process, which served as the foundation for the newly announced international framework. The framework builds upon the principles and agreements reached during the Hiroshima AI Process, with the aim of promoting the safe, secure, and ethical deployment of AI technology worldwide. As part of the initiative, Japan is advocating for the adoption of technologies like Originator Profile (OP), which enables the verification of online information authenticity, thus helping combat the spread of misinformation. #Japan #FumioKishida #AIRegulation #GenerativeAI #OECD #InternationalFramework #GlobalGovernance #G7 #EU #SouthKorea #Singapore #Healthcare #ClimateChange #Disinformation #TechnicalSafeguards #HiroshimaAIProcess #EthicalAI #OriginatorProfile #Misinformation #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

TikTok has suspended its rewards functions in TikTok Lite, a new app catering to regions with slower internet speeds. This decision follows concerns raised by the European Commission regarding the app’s ‘Task and Reward Program,’ which incentivises user engagement with rewards like Amazon vouchers and PayPal gift cards. Particularly, worries over potential addictive effects, especially for children, due to inadequate age verification mechanisms have been highlighted by the EU executive. In response to the Commission’s apprehensions, TikTok stated its commitment to engaging constructively with regulators and suspended the rewards functions. However, Commissioner Thierry Breton emphasised that concerns regarding TikTok’s platform addictiveness persist, along with an ongoing investigation to determine TikTok Lite’s compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA, which came into force recently, imposes regulations on how online platforms handle illegal and harmful content, with TikTok falling under its jurisdiction as a very large online platform (VLOP). Under the DSA, TikTok was required to conduct and submit a risk assessment before launching the Lite app. However, the Commission’s proceedings revealed TikTok’s initial failure to meet this requirement. Despite missing the initial deadline, TikTok eventually submitted the risk assessment, indicating compliance with the Commission’s demands. France’s digital minister and MEPs have welcomed TikTok’s suspension decision, signalling a positive response from the EU authorities regarding the company’s efforts to address regulatory concerns. #TikTok #TikTokLite #RewardsSuspension #EuropeanCommission #TaskAndRewardProgram #AmazonVouchers #PayPalGiftCards #OnlineSafety #ChildSafety #AgeVerification #DigitalServicesAct #DSA #Regulation #OnlinePlatforms #Addictiveness #ThierryBreton #Compliance #RiskAssessment #EURegulation #RegulatoryConcerns #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

A military court in Moscow has reportedly sentenced Meta Platforms spokesperson Andy Stone to six years in prison in absentia for ‘publicly defending terrorism.’ This ruling comes amid Russia’s crackdown on Meta, which was designated as an extremist organisation in the country, resulting in the banning of Facebook and Instagram in 2022 due to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. Meta has yet to comment on the reported sentencing of Stone, who serves as the company’s communications director. Stone himself was unavailable for immediate response following the court’s decision. Stone’s lawyer, Valentina Filippenkova, indicated they intend to appeal the verdict, expressing a request for acquittal. The Russian interior ministry initiated a criminal investigation against Stone late last year, although the specific charges were not disclosed then. According to state investigators, Stone’s online comments allegedly defended ‘aggressive, hostile, and violent actions’ against Russian soldiers involved in what Russia terms its ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. #MetaPlatforms #AndyStone #MoscowCourt #Sentencing #ExtremistOrganization #RussiaUkraineConflict #FacebookBan #InstagramBan #MetaCrackdown #Terrorism #CriminalInvestigation #Appeal #RussianInteriorMinistry #MilitaryOperation #SocialMedia #FreedomOfSpeech #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

In a recent interview, Chris Lehane, the newly appointed vice president of public works at OpenAI, underscores AI’s role as ‘critical infrastructure.’ Drawing comparisons to historical projects like the New Deal, Lehane emphasised OpenAI’s mission to leverage technology for the benefit of ordinary people, particularly in crucial areas like healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. He highlighted the importance of OpenAI’s seeming success in advancing democratic societies worldwide. OpenAI’s cautious choice of the term ‘critical infrastructure’ over ‘public infrastructure’ reflects an awareness of the potential implications. This framing may intensify calls for increased regulation or government oversight of AI products. Chris Lehane emphasises the importance of showcasing AI’s tangible benefits to society as a means to navigate these challenges and gain public trust. As OpenAI evolves, it seeks to navigate regulatory challenges while expanding its services to reach a wider array of users, including non-governmental organisations and governmental agencies serving marginalised communities. This shift in perspective—from seeing AI as a magical solution to recognising it as critical infrastructure—responds to public scepticism toward Silicon Valley’s technological dominance. #OpenAI #ChrisLehane #AI #CriticalInfrastructure #PublicWorks #Regulation #GovernmentOversight #NewDeal #Technology #Healthcare #Education #EnvironmentalSustainability #DemocraticSocieties #PublicTrust #RegulatoryChallenges #SiliconValley #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

Even though the company’s official support page says that to use the Gemini app, you need to have Android 12 or higher, it seems like the company has secretly updated its policies. Until now, users with Android 10 or 11 could only use the web version of the AI chatbot, but thanks to the latest update, Gemini will now be available to millions of users who are using an old phone. Once installed, Google Gemini will replace the company’s existing feature-packed Google Assistant, but the AI chatbot still uses the old digital assistant to handle certain commands. Now Android users with older phones can also enjoy Google's Gemini Chabot, News 18 reported. In a recent update, many users have reported that the latest version of Google Gemini APK is compatible with older devices running on Android 10 and Android 11. In February, Google replaced its current Google Assistant software with a specialised Gemini AI app for Android handsets. Nevertheless, the software could only be used with Android 12 and later at the time of availability. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has intensified its scrutiny of major tech players’ involvement in AI startups, targeting Microsoft and Amazon in particular. The CMA is examining Microsoft’s investment in Mistral and the hiring of Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind’s co-founder, for its new AI division. Similarly, it scrutinises Amazon’s $4 billion investment in Anthropic. These moves have raised concerns about potential monopolistic control and stifling competition, prompting the CMA to solicit comments and potentially launch formal investigations. Joel Bamford, CMA’s executive director of mergers, emphasised an impartial assessment of these deals and their impact on UK competition. CMA’s Chief Executive Sarah Cardell expressed ‘real concerns’ about the AI market, especially with six tech giants forming an ‘interconnected web’ of AI partnerships. Now, a tarot card reader opened up about Kim's inner feelings following Swift's diss track release. In a conversation with The Mirror, Inbaal Honigman shared, "The Tarot cards suggest that Kim is truly hurt by the idea that Taylor Swift is still upset with her." She added, "Kim has a lot of personal self-esteem issues, suggests the 9 of Swords Tarot card. She worries whether anyone likes her at all, and her people-pleasing ways come from a place of insecurity." Inbaal stated that Kanye West's ex-wife "has no desire to hurt or offend anybody, and feels that any backlash is totally unjustified." The celebrity psychic claimed that Kim is truly 'concerned' about her image among her fans. #KimKardashian #TaylorSwift #CelebrityFeud #ThankYouaIMee #TarotReading #CelebrityNews #Skims #TheTorturedPoetsDepartment #KanyeWest #PopCulture #EntertainmentNews #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

Inflation has fallen to its lowest level in two-and-a-half years, driven largely by slowing food price rises. Prices rose by 3.2% in the year to March, down from 3.4% the month before, according to official figures. The cost of some items including meat, crumpets, chocolate biscuits, furniture and household items fell. However, petrol and diesel prices rose. Lower inflation does not mean prices overall are coming down, they are just rising less quickly. While the overall rate of inflation has dropped, goods in the shops are still much more expensive than they were two years ago. #Inflation #PriceDrop #EconomicNews #FoodPrices #PetrolPrices #EconomicData #ConsumerPrices #CostOfLiving #FinancialUpdate #EconomicTrends #ScoopHub #ScoopHubOfficial

Holding hands with someone you care about can help ease their pain. Pavel Goldstein's research at the University of Colorado, Boulder, found that when you hold hands, your heartbeat and breathing sync up with the other person, which can make them feel better. This happens because of something called interpersonal synchronization, where two people's bodies start to work in harmony. The research also showed that if you're really understanding and feel for the other person, the pain-relieving power of holding hands is even stronger. Holding hands is more than just a way to show affection—it's a powerful tool for health and connection. It's a simple gesture that can calm nerves, sync heartbeats, and even relieve pain. This is because our skin is packed with nerve endings that respond to touch, releasing feel-good hormones like oxytocin, known as the "love hormone," which helps us bond and feel close to others. So next time someone you care about is hurting, remember that a gentle touch can go a long way. China has accelerated its efforts to remove foreign-manufactured chips, particularly those sourced from American companies, from its telecommunications networks. For that, Chinese authorities have directed major telecom giants like China Mobile and China Telecom to phase out the use of foreign core processors by the ambitious deadline of 2027. The reliance on Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for crucial core chips in Chinese telecom infrastructure faces a dramatic overhaul with this directive. To reduce dependence on foreign technology, Chinese operators are now urged to adopt domestically produced chips. Under the oversight of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, state-owned mobile operators are actively inspecting their networks for foreign-made chips, aligning with broader national security goals to bolster chip security. China’s efforts to restrict the use of foreign chips extend to government systems, with new guidelines introduced in March specifically targeting Intel and AMD chips. These measures aim to replace foreign technology, including operating systems like Microsoft’s Windows and foreign-made database software, with domestically-made alternatives in federal computer systems. Meanwhile, the US is escalating its efforts to limit Chinese access to advanced chip fabrication technology by urging key trading partners like South Korea to implement stricter export controls on semiconductor tools. #ChinaChips #TelecomNetworks #ChipSecurity #DomesticChips #NationalSecurity #ForeignTechnology #TechRegulation #ChipIndependence #USChinaTrade #Semiconductor #TechPolicy #Intel #AMD #ChipFabrication #ExportControls #ChineseTech #TelecomInfrastructure #MobileOperators #ITSecurity #DataSecurity #scoophub #scoophubofficial

Samsung Electronics Co. is facing a shortage of its S24 smartphones in Pakistan due to overwhelming demand for its flagship phone, as per a report. Since their launch earlier this year, the locally assembled handsets have been flying off the shelves. Despite their higher price compared to other Samsung models, the scarcity of Galaxy S24 Ultra and other S24 devices underscores the purchasing power of affluent Pakistani consumers. With 192 million mobile phone users, Pakistan ranks as the world’s fifth-most populous nation. “Samsung Electronics is working hard to meet our customers’ demand, and we anticipate sales to pick up soon,” stated the South Korean tech giant in an email. Thanks to government financial incentives, Pakistan’s smartphone industry has shifted from importing overseas-made products to domestically assembling the majority of new handsets sold since 2017. Last year, approximately 21 million units were produced locally, with VGOTEL, Infinix, and Itel leading the charge among local and Chinese brands, while 1.7 million units were imported, according to data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. @samsungpakistan #Samsung #Smartphones #PakistanTech #S24 #Samsungelectronics #Pakistan #Scoophub #Scoophubofficial

A 28-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a Tesla car in autopilot mode overran him, The News reported quoting USA Today. Jeffrey Nissen from Washington was pronounced dead on the scene after a Tesla car Model-S hit his bike on state route 522 in Maltby, 25 miles from Seattle, on Friday. As per reports, the Tesla driver had put the car on an autopilot driving system and was using his phone. The car stopped on top of the motorcyclist and couldn’t be moved in time to save him. As per the Seattle Times, the driver has been arrested for “inattention to driving while in autopilot mode, and the distraction of the cell phone while moving forward. The driver trusted the machine to drive for him.” Washington State Patrol Captain Deion Glover said: “It’s still in the early stages of investigation as a lot of unknowns are still out there.” Investigations are underway to find out if the car was in autopilot mode or if the death occurred solely due to the driver’s fault.
