The red-masked parakeet is the famous “wild parrot of San Francisco.” You may have heard it called a cherry-headed conure. That misnomer is telling; it’s the name the pet trade uses for the species, and the pet trade is responsible for the naturalized San Francisco parakeet population. San Francisco isn’t alone. Populations of red-masked parakeets are now established on some Hawaiian Islands, towns and cities in Southern California, in and around Miami, Florida, and in towns in southern Spain, all thanks to people releasing their pets (both unintentionally and intentionally). 🦜🤦 The red-masked parakeet is native to lowland forests of Ecuador and Peru. Both the native South American population and the smaller, established populations around the world feed on fruits and seeds and roost in large flocks at night, generally returning to the same location each evening. During the day, smaller, foraging flocks of between 2-25 birds spend much of each day feeding, socializing, preening, and courting in other locations. The native South American population is considered Near Threatened (an official conservation designation) due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as capture for the pet trade. By contrast, it seems the naturalized populations in places like San Francisco are generally growing. Fortunately, research so far suggests these populations are “exotic, but not invasive,” because they do not appear to be having detrimental effects on native bird species or habitats. There are also some good controls; in San Francisco, the parakeets have become favorite targets of raptors like Cooper’s hawks.

Ces oiseaux sont originaires de l'Amérique du Sud entre le sud-est de l'Équateur et le nord du Pérou. 322. Red-masked Parakeet (Psittacara erythrogenys). 24 April 2022. Miami-Dade, Florida, United States. These Red-masked Parakeets were a huge treat to see. Stalking the lists before making my plans for the South Florida Birding Bonanza, I found a park with the potential for four nesting lifers. Keeping this in mind, I kept checking the lists from this area, but the reports of these lifers started to fade away. Nevertheless, I kept this park on our list of places to hit, and I’m so happy I did. Walking into the park, I immediately saw a grove of palm trees with gaping woodpecker holes and knew this was the area. Stepping into the shade, Kayla and I scrutinized each nest hole until we saw two heads resting on the edge of one with their eyes drowsily half closed. These parakeets seemed very content until a group of loud, unobservant tourists trudged through the grass directly below the tree. Both birds sprang out of the hole, one parakeet perched facing down, screaming at the oblivious family below, while the other scanned above for raptors. ..ya que he hablado de especies exóticas invasoras , y esta semana he tenido mucho tiempo para ver mi galería , tiro de archivo otra vez ,. Esta vez de hará 5 meses cuando iba a casa de uno de mis mejores amigos , , al que tengo un poco abandonado... Y me di cuenta que estas aves no eran cotorras argentinas , ni kramer son loros de cabeza roja del Perú , o Guayaquil ( #psittacaraerythrogenys erythrogenys) ya que eran casi el doble de grandes que las cotorras , ,¿Cómo que están en una ciudad dormitorio como la mía ? ¿Que estragos causarán ? Me pregunté ,, de la cotorra argentina y de la kramer ya lo sabía porque valencia está llena , ese estudio que decían en 2013 que solo habían 100 individuos en valencia... Parece que era muy optimista con el paso de los años , cuando a fecha de hoy habrán más de 1500.. Bueno pues volviendo al loro , vi un estudio de #seobirds valencia en 2005 ( creo ) donde ya la situaban en la capital en el año 95 donde se veían un bando de 21 ejemplares y sin saber que población está censada a 2021... Bueno pues esta especie de loro , no causa tantos estragos como las cotorras al anidar en huecos de edificios y no hacer nidos de 30kilos en la copa de los árboles como sus primas pequeñas ( que en cualquier momento se puede desprender y causar un accidente ), hablando de alimentacion comen cualquiera fruto duro y/o semilla siendo competencia para aves como las tórtolas. ,palomas bravias y demás aves que se alimentan de semillas y siendo competencia para aves que anidan en huecos de edificios y de árboles. Pero si a estos sumamos los grandes números de cotorra de kramer , y cotorra argentina están dejando una huella gigantesca , en la que ni un ajuntamiento de cualquier localidad /color / últimos años están haciendo nada. A las personas generalmente la molestia es el gran ruido que hacen , y en el caso de las cotorras los nidos que son muy pesados , que ya han causado más de un accidente dada la inacción de los consistorios. Mi opinión , que como un animal invasor exotico ... O al menos controlar su número Son muy bonitas , eso no lo niego 😅, Ah sí la manera de identificar las cotorras es la verde pico naranja es la Argentina ,
