Finally, it really is a Good Friday. A four day respite from the rigours of the working week and despite not having taken my own advice to rest last weekend, this one I really will be. When you’re given four days off without eating into your annual leave, who wouldn’t? This will be my first Spanish Easter and if Christmas was anything to go by, the best way I’ve made myself at home is to recreate familiar traditions. The colours and fabrics that we’d don for church and family gatherings will be my best friends this weekend. On Wednesday and right in time for International Women’s Day, I received some fantastic news at work, which is an important achievement for me. I felt valued and I felt appreciated. Without a doubt, I’m immensely grateful. But I’ve also worked very hard for this. Not just in the three and half years since I joined the company, but the collective experiences I’ve gathered from my past are what make me the professional that I am today. And when I speak about experience, I’m talking about successes and failures alike, and of course those rather steep learning curves which make up the rich tapestry of our resume. Having spent over twenty years in London’s financial district, in some of the most challenging and competitive environments, I can definitely attest that I haven’t always had the privilege of such a supportive environment. On choosing a new role, or even deciding whether to stay or leave, my advice is to always go with your gut. The company you’re working for might have a glamorous name or an extremely prestigious reputation. You might be working in a role that dozens would fill if you left. But all this means nothing if the culture or even the work is sapping your soul and diminishing your confidence. Our work and careers are the very cornerstones of our lives, so for those who are lucky enough to have some choice in the matter, it should at least to some degree, feel that there’s a sense of purpose. Realistically speaking, it’s a sliding scale. At the least, it should be something one mildly enjoys. At best, it should be challenging, exciting, rewarding and fulfilling. When I told E the news, he was just as elated. ‘I’m proud about you’ he said. You see, when I win, he wins. For those looking to meet someone, please, please find a man who won’t be intimidated by your successes. Find a man who will support you, who will push you and who will challenge you to be better. Even at work! We all need this support, from friends, family, colleagues and mentors, because the very unfortunate reality is that not everyone is going to support you. Not everyone will want to see you succeed. Not genuinely anyway. Go where you are celebrated. Not tolerated.

After serving as the CEO of Chase Consumer Banking for over four years, it was recently announced that Thasunda Duckett @thasunda will become the next CEO of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA). When she steps into this role on May 1, she will be the second Black woman currently leading a Fortune 500 firm, and just the fourth Black woman in history to serve as a Fortune 500 CEO. Duckett credits much of her success to finding her career passion early on. In her most recent role at Chase, Duckett led a banking network with more than $600 billion in deposits, 4,900 branches and over 40,000 employees. “I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity to lead a company that has helped millions of people retire with ‘enough’ to live in dignity and excited about the opportunity to help TIAA chart its next 100 years,” she continues. The 47-year-old exec will succeed Roger Ferguson, who announced his retirement from TIAA in November after a 13-year run as CEO.
