It was an honor to watch Joshua accept his scholarship as an Alabama Public Television Young Hero. It was surreal sitting in the Alabama House and Senate Chambers, watching him smile from ear to ear as a resolution was passed in his honor. Joshua thanked APT for providing the opportunity and hosting the event, Mrs. Patel for nominating him for the award and being “a beacon of hope and bright light” at JCHS, his band directors and teachers for serving as mentors throughout the years, and his family for motivating him and each other, despite the setbacks. Mrs. Patel thanked Josh for shining a light on mental illness, sharing our family’s story here on the bakery page and with others in need. When we share our struggles openly, others can pray in specifics, shoulder some of our burden, and feel encouraged to share their struggles too. This helps end the negative stigma surrounding depression, anxiety, and mental health in general. It may even help stop suicide ideation or completion. We met a lot of talented youth and educators while in Montgomery. We shared delicious meals, toured the capital building and museum of archives where Joshua’s resolution will be stored, and heard the stories of the five inspiring youth from across the state who were selected. The CFO, President, and Events Manager of Alabama Public Television, along with every person we met, from congressmen, senators, and television hosts to bus drivers, restaurant servers, and hotel clerks were so kind and hospitable. This is an honor Joshua, the other four awardees, and all of our families will never forget. What a beautiful thing it is to witness the triumphs that come from the trials. We enjoyed a relaxing spring break on 30A! Our favorite retreat is the Dunes of Seagrove, our favorite beach is Grayton State Park, and our favorite ice-cream is in Seaside, at Heavenly. We’ve posed these same photos on these same beaches since 2012! It’s Joshua’s senior year, so this vacation was bittersweet as we don’t know if all of our breaks will align once he starts college in the fall. Happy Thanksgiving from the bakery! We have SO MUCH to be thankful for! After we finished our cookie orders we enjoyed a Friendsgiving meal with neighbors and a big dinner with our family. Our older sons came with their girlfriends and we took pictures at the park, played board games, set up Christmas, snuggled on the couches, shared stories and sweets, then filled out our annual “stocking stuffer surveys.” We write down memories, experiences, and favorites and tuck them inside our Christmas stockings before the end of each year. It’s neat to read the boys’ sheets from when they were little! We are grateful to be surrounded by SO MUCH love! We are grateful for our family, friends, students, teaching jobs, youth orchestra, bakery, and customers! We are grateful for our lives! It’s hard to believe it’s been three years (this week) since we learned Joshua would need emergency brain surgery at Vanderbilt while William was receiving treatment there. Life and all of its moments become so much more poignant after walking through the valley of the shadow of death. Thank you for helping our small business flourish year after year! We had to stop posting so much this past summer and fall because our regular customers kept us afloat without advertising and we had a lot of public school commitments. It was a great feeling knowing we have so much community support! We are going to spend the rest of the weekend relaxing with our family then will open Christmas orders on Monday! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of our wonderful customers! We’ve enjoyed a quiet day at home and quality time spent with each other! Our greatest gift this Christmas and always is William’s life! We are thankful he is home for the holidays and doing so well! He thoroughly enjoys decorating cakes commercially and is back to working full time outside of the home! He also still bakes and decorates most of the cakes that leave our home bakery and the boys and I handle the cookies! William enjoyed some time off over Christmas, took a break from baking, and had a great time conducting the Madison City Youth Orchestra at Toyota Field during their light show! TMS is a miracle worker and has helped William (and our family) more than any other treatment! We highly recommend it for clinical depression that is med-resistant and we’re happy to recommend treatment centers and doctors if you or someone you know is struggling! We count our MANY blessings this Christmas—YOU included! Thank you for keeping our family bakery open and thriving another year!
