This is Sean and Matt, or as we like to call them around here, the dynamic duo. These dudes gave us permission to post about them because they are real life examples of the mindset, dedication, and approach that we harp on so much here at Nocturnality. Sean and Matt are buddies and have come to all three Nocturnality Symposiums together. In years two and three we began developing the competitive side of Symposium a little more significantly, but all three years these two have performed all challenges at the top of the roster, and this past year these two scored top position and second position across two nights of diverse challenges ranging from flat range competition style shooting, mental shooting challenges, navigation and equipment specific challenges, and beyond. Their final scores were 8 points apart from one another in 2024, with around 300 points to the next competitor in third place. Although our event does not guarantee the top two spots as winners of the two night vision and thermal grand prizes given away (they can still be won by anyone in the pack through random draw), in 2024 the stars aligned and Sean placed first and won a set of white phosphor dual tubes and Matt placed just barely behind in second and won a PVS14. In short, these two dudes are a force to be reckoned with in the dark. They both exhibit proficiency in all areas we test you in at Symposium, and also have leadership qualities we observed over the last three years. But you know what else they have in common? They both use Photonis tubes - Echos and high gain green in a Vyper and a DTNVS. Next time you read something online about any tubes, not just Photonis, having anything to do with your ability to win in the dark, just think of these two guys. Now, before anyone says "well there's tons of light in these pictures of course Photonis would do fine" - you're wrong. Symposium 24 had multiple challenges of sheer blackness, and took place under zero moon illumination. Sure, sometimes we added light, but this was done selectively in its own way to challenge. The tubes had nothing to do with it - they weren't at any noticeable advantage OR disadvantage. It comes down to you.

Let's go back in time to 2017, two years before Nocturnality was started, when we had the idea that a highly capable bridge for monocular night vision devices (and thermal) was interesting for a whole host of reasons. At that time, bridged anything was highly discouraged within the community, and to some extent still is today. However, back then, it was almost entirely bridging of two PVS14s of varying quality and degrees of "matching" since there were a lot more contract surplus units compared to new production tube units. At that time, the RQE Universal Bridge was the pinnacle of bridge capabilities and we spent a few years using dual PVS14s. A FLIR Breach was acquired and used intermittently. The idea of having two NV monos and one thermal mono, all capable of being integrated into the bridge and configurable from hybrid vision to dual tube night vision became the ultimate in solutions that involved potential danger. Today, the @noisefighters Panobridge M1, along with significantly more capable thermal monocular solutions, are taking that same concept to new levels. With the M1, a single bridge can now serve all roles from hybrid vision to dual tube NV - all with optional wider field of view that you can activate/deactivate while it's mounted to your head. The addition of locking screws and rigidity of aluminum, while still maintaining incredibly light weight of ~2oz, is icing on the cake. Our advice to newer night vision purchasers here has always been buy current Gen 3 or Photonis Echo/4G, and worry about tube test data (or "tube specs") second. Most current image tubes, especially Gen 3, are going to be very good tools and not limit your capabilities for general ground, helmet mounted use compared to others. If you've also read our paper on our method for "grading" tubes based on certain relevant tube test data, using something we call the PVU method, then you know there's also a point where an image tube just isn't worth considering for purchase outside of the scenario where it's just super heavily discounted. Tube specs do matter, at least a little bit, afterall, and there are some baseline cutoff points where we'd advise against paying for a tube with certain very uncommonly poor characteristics. So that begs the question, what's the worst factory new condition, relatively current production image tube we've seen? How bad can it really be? Well, here it is. We've had a particular L3Harris unfilmed commercial grade tube in our inventory for almost three years. It scores a -10 on our PVU scale based on the following: Signal to Noise Ratio - 25.5 EBI - 2.6 Halo - 0.9 Spots - Zone 2 8x8 You can see an image through this tube in the second slide where there are higher levels of ambient light and the tube is still operating in the "High Light" regime. As you can see, we've had this tube for almost three years because it is essentially unmarketable, not because it is incapable. The cost is more than its usability and performance, and therefore it fails on value. It is *still* quite usable and well performing in the general sense of seeing in the dark, as again there is an element of relativity in all things night vision. "The required gain for an image intensifier system heavily depends on the application. In the photon counting limit a higher gain does increase the intensity of the event speckles but also does increase the intensity of the noise speckles. The net effect is that the SNR over a large enough area will still go up a bit but the image keeps its noisy appearance... Roughly one can say that from a gain of 3 x 104 fL/fc onwards the image keeps the same noisy impression for the observer" -Leon A. Bosch, "Image Intensifier Tube Performance is What Matters" Stanford Computer Optics ---- High gain image tubes are becoming widely available, with gain levels exceeding the typical current Gen 3 range of 50,000-70,000. Tube gain is a function that is set in a specific range by the manufacturer for best combination of life span and performance. Recently the ability to increase gain further while maintaining acceptable lifespan has been achievable. The question is, what does this do for field performance, and does it improve low light capabilities versus SNR? We compared three image tubes in multiple conditions to see whether a "normal gain" but high SNR tube is preferable to a "high gain" but lesser SNR tube in low light conditions. See tube specs in comments. Increased gain level to above Gen 3 norm results in more image noise at all light levels. This increase is marginally offset in lowest light conditions in terms of functionality, demonstrated most readily on the Hoffman 20/20 low light resolution pattern tests where the results of L3H and L3 are roughly the same despite the standard tube having 25% more SNR. However, in other field conditions in photon counting limit levels, it was more obvious the benefit of SNR over gain, such as in long distance detection and ability to see fine important details. Compare the lake geography scene, where the 38 SNR L3 tube and lower gain can more easily see remnants of campfire on the outcrop instead of it being more hidden in noise. Gain should be selected based on need as there are tradeoffs, SNR is always a benefit.

Why do we take our product selection so seriously? Why don't we line up to offer the latest NV housings that appear to have desirable features? Short answer - it puts your money at risk. Product innovation is a great thing, and we like what we see in the night vision world with development of new systems, but it's not without potential pitfalls. If the standard operating procedure becomes a continual flow of "updates" to system design as they are rushed to market, this can be problematic and risky for you. Why? If there's a design flaw that you couldn't foresee, all of the value of the image tubes and other components that you spent money in is now tied to the perceived value of the overall system. If the system isn't as fully capable as you expected, others are likely to learn the same and the value of your system is diminished even though much of the overall cost has nothing to do with the housing itself. The best case scenarios are maybe your system is updated to a new design iteration for free, or you just work with a qualified shop to perform an image tube swap into another system type that is more suitable. The worst case scenario is that you're stuck with the system because the market has decided the flaws are undesirable as well. For other products, this isn't a huge deal because most things you buy don't cost $5,000-$10,000. But in night vision, these are important considerations. This is why we are so into two concepts you hear us talk about a lot: 1) Don't just "invest in your tubes" because both their performance and their value is dependent on other components of the system 2) We take product selection and testing seriously because it can impact users, and we are users.
