Ironclad, known in Japan as Choutetsu Brinkin'ger (超銖ブリキンガー Ultimate Brikinger) is a Shoot 'em Up game released in 1996 by Saurus for the Neo Geo CD. Ironclad was originally developed for the Neo Geo MVS system, however this version was cancelled and the game would later be released for the Neo Geo CD console. The prototype MVS rom was used for the Wii Virtual Console port. The peaceful Chop Kingdom is suddenly facing an invasion from the forces of the Iron Mask Republic. The Kingdom's resistance force develops a set of new high tech ships which come equipped with the autonomous Ironclad Robot for support. The ships are then sent to fight back the invaders. Ironclad is a horizontally scoring shooter where the player can choose between three different ships. There are no lives, as the player has a life meter which can be replenished or increased by picking up the corresponding items. When the life meter is completely depleted, it's game over. The player can also pick up items to equip different weapons and power up the ship's guns. Unique to this game is that the player's ship won't receive damage when colliding to terrain or enemies, only being damaged by the enemies' attacks. The main mechanic of the game involves the "Robot", which works similarly to the force pod in the R-Type games. The game features branching paths, much like in the Darius games. After clearing a stage, the player can choose between two different stages to play next. There are five different final stages, all but one ending with facing Grim, the villain introduced in stage 1, as the final boss. Neo-Geo CD Day 7: The Crossed Swords series. -Crossed Swords 1 NGH-037 / ALH-002 - AES -Crossed Swords 2 NGH-054 - Neo-Geo CD It's #snksunday with @hobbycorp Crossed Swords is ADK's attempt at creating an arcade centric action RPG. The hook is that the game works in a semi first person perspective with your character avatar being a transparent wireframe. That's unlike SNK's The Super Spy where it's fully first person. The first game is pretty straight forward with one attack button and a magic attack button. You can block and dodge oncoming attacks, then retaliate with your own flurry. There is a limited economy system with new weapons to buy, health upgrades and the like. The second game, which is a Neo CD exclusive, expounds upon the prior game by giving you the choice of a knight, ninja, or monk who all have their own special attacks, weapons to buy, and magic. There is also a dodge button now, and that is SO welcome. Being able to quickly strafe left or right gives the game more options leading to more satisfying play. These games are both great fun, but the second is much more polished. "But Bokujinzero," I hear you say, "I saw an AES and MVS copy of the second game on eBay!" These are bootlegs - repros or EPROM conversions. There was no official SNK/ADK release on anything other than Neo CD. Due to its exclusive nature, this is one of the more pricy Neo CD releases. That said, it's still less than a CIB copy of the first on AES - which itself is relatively cheap these days. You ever play these games? Neo-Geo CD Day 6: Art of Fighting 3 Special Edition. It's also #fightinggamefriday with @king_lizzard and @thatretroperson I've always had a soft spot for AOF3. With its huge characters, beautiful sprite work, and amazing rotoscoped animation - it's a 2D fighter that plays more akin to early Virtua Fighter and Tekken given the absurd fluidity of the attacks. It's a methodical game that will challenge you to be a calm player. Button mashers need not apply as the traditional tactics and fast movement of other 2D fighting games just won't work here. Give it a fighting chance, though, and you'll discover one of the most unique fighting games of the classic era. The AOF team made some edits to get the game to fit on the Neo CDs RAM config. Generally, most animation frames comes intact, but the size of the character sprites took a heavy hit - the Art of Fighting series' defining feature. With these smaller sprites, the signature camera zoom feature is also significantly diminished in effect. It still looks great tho! Still, if you didnt have access to an AES or MVS back then, this CD version was the only way to play the game. Due to having FAR less RAM than the Neo CD, there were no ports to the 32-bit consoles. Even the mighty Saturn with a 4mb RAM cart still has less RAM than the Neo CD (there's some nuance here due to the way RAM works in the Neo CD, so that's a bit of an oversimplification for brevity sake). This special edition is full of useless but fun stuff you generally find in these kinds of releases: stickers, small art book etc. You do get a replica of Robert's coin, which is a nice touch as this game is focused on him rather than Ryo. Is this the way to play this game in 2023 if you don't have an AES/MVS? Nah - play it on Arcade Archives or an emulator. Lol - While the Neo CD version plays fine, the much smaller sprites and abhorrent load times make this a bit of a slog on the hardware. This is still a fun collector set, tho, and you can often find a set in decent condition for under $50 these days. Moving along with the ADK theme this week, Crossed Swords 1 and 2 are part of ADK's so called Belkana Trilogy that also includes Magician Lord (some recently discovered design documents have shed additional light on some early ADK works on the Neo). The Crossed Swords games are first person hack & slash experiences where you can see a wire frame shilouette of your character. It's a bit odd, but it works. As you progress through the story you are met with enemy hordes you must defeat before moving on to the next area to do the same thing - over and over again. Thankfully you have a varied set of attack, defense, and magic mechanics to help you along the way. You can also shop for items and weapon and health upgrades with the money dropped by downed enemies. The second game adds in two additional characters and greatly expands mobility options allowing for dashes and dash attacks. 2 is a SUBSTANTIAL upgrade to the first game as the pacing, animation, story progression, and overall mechanics are much more fleshed out. The first game is fine, but it definitely feels rough compared to the second. Crossed Swords 2 is a Neo CD exclusive, although you can find bootleg MVS and AES carts out there that use the first game's music in place of the Redbook audio on the original CD release. Load times are very fast, so there really isn't any reason to not play the game on CD. Both games are worth a look, especially if you're after something a little different on your Neo other than fighting or shooting games. Some oddities for #snksunday The Neo-Geo Special CD is a collection of demos, character bios, and information. There isn't a whole lot here, and would be akin to the demo discs that often came with early CD consoles. ADK world has a variety of mini-games staring characters from ADK franchises. As this came out prior to Twinkle Star Sprites and Ninja Master's, characters from those games are missing. That said, there is a great shmup mini-game staring Brocken from World Heroes, so...that's a thing. :) I'm working on a short review for the Special CD, but a good buddy of mine provided an overview of ADK World for me. For #snksunday this week, I'm dipping into some Neo CD exclusives. Samurai Shodown RPG is a big mixed bag of hubris and wonderment. At times it's the slowest, poorly paced JRPG ever, and at other times the pixel art is so beautiful you forget all of the game's faults. As a 90's RPG goes it does little to stand out from the crowd, but it does have a few unique features. First up is you can choose to play each of the two scenarios (that follow the first two SS games) as one of 6 characters, complete with plot beats of their own. The second is the ability to choose whether you want menu commands for special moves or to input fighting game motions. The art and animation are top notch as well. The game never had an official translation, and the fan translation project that was in the works was dropped years ago with only Haohmaru's quest in the first scenario being (almost) completed. I think there is also an unfinished French translation patch floating around as well. It's not impossible to play in Japanese, but without being able to engage in the story more, the game's warts show all that much more. It's an interesting curio or Neo or SS fans in general, and it's worth trying out just to see what SNK was going for here. But the ridiculously high random encounter rate and needlessly long battles really bog down the experience. Make sure to check out the full review at www.bokujinsroom.net Also, stay FAR FAR away from the Saturn and PS1 ports - huge cuts to animation and detail, and the game has to load every time you blink your eyes.
