It's Day 15 of The Countdown to Hello Detroit! An Evening with Vanessa Carr ...Have you gotten your tickets yet? Did you know it's been over 100 YEARS since Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island have both been on the corner of Lafayette Blvd and Michigan Ave? Wow. What a legacy! I will never forget my first Coney dog in Detroit. I was a little girl, and my whole family went with a mission to try a Coney dog from both diners. My Grandpa has always been a big fan of Coney Island chili, so it was an especially exciting day for him and a delicious outing had by all! Now, for your behind-the-scenes look... OH. MY. GOSH. I can't tell you how fun it was to shoot these two locations. I am laughing while writing this. To quote Marta Reeves, I was "dancing in the street!" It was such a whirlwind of fun and laughs as Jim took the reins, and we started in the street, and then through Lafayette to strut past the serving counter. The cooks were so accommodating and inviting to contribute to the video. They made us a Coney dog on the spot! Following this, of course, we weren't finished. We had to include American Coney as well! We rushed over. On this particular day, there was a Bengals v Lions game, so the joint was full. Fans and workers were thrilled to be a part of the video. We danced and grooved. It was just great to feel the energy of the people. This week happened to be leading up to Motor City Pride in Detroit. We lucked out with a great opportunity to share the inclusivity of the city. We were there before the celebration began, but it was really cool to see all the celebration prep. You can see all the flags and flowers adorning the stage. It looked beautiful! This portion of the video was inspired by Diana Ross's 1983 Central Park performance of Reach Out And Touch. We loved the idea of a shall or cape blowing in the wind. So, we brought the shawl and we brought the leaf blower, and away we flew! I hope your week is off to a great start. It's Day 13 of The Countdown to Hello Detroit! An Evening with Vanessa Carr ...Have you gotten your tickets yet? Oh my gosh. As someone who loves Broadway musicals, I can't tell you how cool it was to film inside the Fisher Building. I always get so excited to see shows at the Fisher Theater. This day, Jim took the reigns and we were able to collect this STUNNING footage just outside the theater that has hosted the world premiere of shows like Fiddler on the Roof and Hello Dolly! The Fisher is also a favorite venue of many of Broadway's biggest stars, such as: Carol Channing, Joel Grey and Bernadette Peters🤩. I still remember seeing The Lion King at the Fisher as a little girl. It was so exciting. Such a beautiful theater. Since then, I've seen shows like Les Misérables, The Book of Mormon, Rent, Billy Porter in concert and many more. It's definitely one of my favorite theaters in Detroit. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! It's Day 12 of The Countdown to Hello Detroit! An Evening with Vanessa Carr ...Have you gotten your tickets yet? I LOVED filming this part of our project. As you may know, my mom was a Middle Eastern dancer in Greektown back in the day. They called her Sahara, and she was spectacular. She performed everywhere... festivals, Hart Plaza, political conventions, she was featured on Kelly and Company, but it all started in Greektown. You want to know what's really cool? WDIV had a promotional commercial highlighting the city in the 80s, and my mom was featured dancing! Guess what song was playing in the background of that commercial. Yup! Hello Detroit. We had to come back to where it all began. Growing up, my mom taught us the art of Middle-Eastern dance. So, this time, my sisters and I danced with my mom down Monroe Street in Greektown. In these pictures, we're all wearing pieces from my mom's costumes. It's a memory I will never forget. What a blessing. Before this, the last time I was a part of one of my mom's performances in Greektown, I was in her stomach. Haha. It's Day 9 of The Countdown to Hello Detroit! An Evening with Vanessa Carr ...Have you gotten your tickets yet? Today, I am going back in time to this week in 2022. I can't believe it has been that long since I had the pleasure of helping out at our May 30th benefitting charity: Gleaners! If you're familiar with Gleaners, you know what a no-brainer it was to include them in this project. Gleaners Community Food Bank has been serving Detroit and the surrounding areas for over 47 years. There are many wonderful things to say about this organization. I love knowing that every $1 donated provides three meals. That's a big deal! In these photos, we were at the Detroit Distribution Center, where they process a tremendous volume of donated and purchased food to serve neighbors in need. This particular morning, we packed dozens (maybe hundreds?) of boxes with nonperishable food items in an assembly line style. From a volunteer's perspective, Gleaners has everything down to a science, and their processes are so efficient. At the end of this shift, it felt very gratifying for all of us to look at what we accomplished. I was there as a solo person, but there was a group of volunteers there from a large company. In the summer, it's transformed into a beach-y paradise and in the winter, you can ice skate and witness the marvel of Detroit's community Christmas tree. We made our way around the fountain, stopped and sang for a group that gathered nearby, and featured trumpet player: Max Popkin in this scene. It's Cinco de Mayo! And Day 5 of The Countdown to Hello Detroit! An Evening with Vanessa Carr One of my earliest memories in Detroit was eating at Xochimilco in Mexicantown. I'm sure this was where many of you ate the first time you visited Mexicantown, as well. I always enjoy bringing friends and family from out of town there. I loved highlighting Mexicantown when we filmed down Bagley Street in Detroit. It is such a festive and cultural corridor. What an honor to showcase artwork by talented local artists in the music video. In this shot, a vibrant and stunning mural of Frida Kahlo is shown. This mural was created by the one and only Elton Monroy Durán, a Mexican artist who has called Detroit home for the last decade. His impressive works are featured throughout Southwest Detroit.
