There are two rows of memorials as well as 'eyebrow' beds. We pull weeds, trim plants, pick up trash, and sweep around the memorials. Ed's Triangle is a 1.3 acre triangular median on Nimitz near the entrance to I-8 and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. The median has large mature palm trees around the circumference. Last week, our Mean Green Team got to work at our home base – the shed on Soto Street. The Team got rid of a lot of surrounding overgrowth, including weeding and trimming, and of course picking up trash in the area. Last week was the final leg of our NTC Park Channel Median Cleanup Project. Our volunteers – augmented by City Park & Rec workers and staff from the Hotels at Liberty Station – swooped in to tidy up (an understatement). Our PLA Green Team leaders, Karen and Cecilia, met with Park Supervisor Wendelien Anderson as she introduced new NTC Park Supervisor Caitlan Shankles who just moved over from Mission Bay Park to Liberty Station. Last week, we had 36 Mean Green Team members pitch in to clean up the vegetation arrayed on the path beside the boat channel at NTC Park. The volunteers accomplished a lot! They took out a dead palm and some stray pepper trees. They battled stubborn birds of paradise to give up their dead blooms and leaves, and they cleaned the clutter. Again, staff from the Liberty Station Hotel Team joined the big project, and everyone gathered after for coffee and treats at the Courtyard of the Marriott. The big NTC Park Green Team cleanup project began last week after the rain cleared. It was the first of four weeks dedicated to cleaning up the esplanade along the channel waterway by the park, since there is lots of stuff growing wild in that area Week one began in the land beside the Marriott and Hilton hotels, with staff from the Marriott hotel joining the work party. We want to extend a big thank you to Jaci Sims for providing coffee, pastries and fruit for after work brunch at the hotel. Mean Greeners - This Friday, February 9, at 9:00 a.m., we plan to start our four-week NTC Park channel median clean-up project that was postponed from last week. To remind everyone, the median parallels the water channel. There is parking near Womble and Cushing. There is also a parking lot at Farragut and Cushing that is close to the hotels and near the area where we will be starting our work, close to the Courtyard by Marriott. We'll be joined by some Marriott and Hilton staff who also want to help in our clean-up. We will be cleaning/trimming/thinning the numerous birds of paradise and taking out any plants that do not belong in the median (a couple of palms, one dead tree and some other invasives). There will also be weeding and litter pick-up to do. Please bring your vests, gloves and favorite tools. If you have clippers, please bring those, as we will need several for the bulk of our work. We'll have collection bags/bins on hand, as well as some tools to lend. If you have a wheelbarrow or wagon you'd like to bring, that would be great. We will be hauling our cuttings to dumpsters/piles. We have purchased some wheels for our bins that will help us move debris. We will be hosted for refreshments at 11:00 a.m. each Friday by generous Marriott-Hilton Marketing Director Jaci Sims and her staff at the Courtyard patio. UPDATE: Due to the weather, our worksite for Friday has changed. Instead of working at NTC Park, we will plan on working at our Soto site. We will be organizing, cleaning and sharpening our tools. The group will work for about an hour and then decide if and where they want to gather for refreshments. The rain is supposed to ease off in the morning, so we wanted to have a plan for those anxious to get out. Mean Greeners - This Friday, January 26, we will meet at 8:50 a.m. at Westminster Park for our big donor-auction project. Our wonderful benefactors, Carol and John Landis, purchased our services on this site, so we certainly want to thank them by doing a donor-worthy job. Westminster Park is located on the grounds of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3598 Talbot Street (at the corner of Talbot and Canon). You may park in the church lot (there are two levels of parking -- the park is adjacent to the lower parking lot) or along the street. Karen would like everyone to be at the site by 8:50am so that we can be divided into groups and will be ready to start our work promptly at 9:00. We will be cleaning up overgrown weeds along Canon (adjacent to Westminster Park) and along the park back-entrance on Ullman, as well as trimming trees/bushes, and raking out debris and trash. This is a large space, so we will divide volunteers into four work groups. Please bring your vest, gloves and any favorite tools you may have, depending on the type of work you prefer to do. Our Mean Green Team tended to the Hugh Story Memorial Rose Garden in Liberty Station last week. It’s that time of year when our rose team does a major pruning of the rose bushes to maximize the number and size of future blooms and make them more beautiful and healthy. A lot of work, but well worth the time – now we wait! If you have roses, it’s a good idea to carefully cut them back each January. It keeps the plants healthy and stimulates flowering, since removing diseased or damaged parts of the plant is crucial. Mean Greeners - This Friday, January 12, we will meet at 9:00 a.m. at our Rose Garden worksite in Liberty Station. The Hugh Story Memorial Rose Garden was created and is maintained by the Point Loma Association. The garden is located in the large park adjacent to the water channel behind the white cannons along Cushing Road. There is parking along the street as well as in various lots in the area. This is the time of year when our rose team does a major pruning of the rose bushes. This type of pruning takes special training, so there will be other jobs to do as well, such as collecting the pruned branches and tending the eyebrow beds near the garden. When you arrive on Friday, please check in with Karen, especially if you'd like to help with the rose garden, so she can direct you and provide any necessary instructions/training. There is always plenty of weeding, trimming, and trash pick-up to do in the eyebrow beds. Please bring your gloves (they are vital in the rose garden), your vest, and your favorite tools. Placing wreaths on the submarine memorials at NTC Park, Liberty Station has become an annual holiday tradition, hosted by the San Diego Chapter of the 52 Boats Memorial and the Point Loma Association. It began half a dozen years ago. This past Thursday, Captain Jeffrey Yackeren, USN, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Point Loma welcomed the guests as he acknowledged the valuable roll the submariners played in the early months of WWII and beyond. Sandy Hanshaw, who chairs Point Loma Association, summarized the history of placing the wreaths and expressed appreciation for the volunteers who support this program each year. Over several weeks, our Green Team spruced up the landscaping around the memorials. The San Diego Base of United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) displayed the flags. Con Pane and Trader Joe’s supported the event with donations. Mean Greeners - Instead of meeting on Friday for a work day, we will meet on Thursday, December 7, to participate in the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Submarine Memorials in Liberty Station. Please arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. We will gather in the grassy area by the parking lot at the corner of Cushing and Dewey. The ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. After remarks, we will take a wreath and a bow (you will need to affix the bow to your wreath) and then hang them from the pre-affixed hooks on each memorial. The flags will already be up, so we are just responsible for helping with the wreaths. Submariners and their family members are also invited to place wreaths. Refreshments will be available at the site for all to enjoy after the ceremony. Please wear your MGT vest to the ceremony. Several years ago our group took on the responsibility of tending the memorial areas as a way to let submariners and their families know we care about them and appreciate their sacrifices on our behalf, and members of our group came up with the idea to place wreaths on the memorials during the holidays. Mean Greeners – This Friday, September 29, at 9am we will be doing one of our MGT special auction projects. We encourage as many of you as possible to join us! The project is at Driscoll Wharf (North Harbor Dr.) where Chula Seafood is located (far end of the large parking lot where Jimmy’s and Pizza Nova are located, adjacent to the Navy property. Turn into the parking lot where the Jimmy’s sign is). Parking is adjacent to Driscoll’s Wharf: past Jimmy’s, veer towards the water and keep on driving towards the lime green wharf building and park on the left side of the lot (customers for the fish shops park on the right). We will weed, trim the bushes, lay down some mulch in the back, plant succulents in the front of the building, pick up litter, sweep and whatever else you wish to do to make the place look great. Then we will have coffee and donuts. Bring $ if you want to purchase fresh fish for dinner. As you know, every year the MGT auctions itself to help make money for PLA. The money goes to pay for things like watering the medians, tree trimmings, our monthly maintenance contracts with Total Green, gas, maintenance and insurance for the truck, mulch, vests, clippers, etc. We are the largest expense for the Point Loma Association, close to $50,000/yr. We always want to over deliver on our projects, so please join us. It will be FUN, it makes us look good and it makes those MGT bidders, like Tom Driscoll, continue to be generous and supportive. Last Friday we had 34 volunteers turn out to help us beautify Shelter Island. Our Green Team works semi-frequently on Shelter Island – usually near the boat launch, and especially around holidays – cleaning the beach and whacking away at dead or overgrown vegetation. But their other mission was to care for the colorful plants that have sprung up in other places, thanks to creative cultivating by dedicated volunteers. Before the kids headed back to school last week, our Mean Green Team was at Dewey Elementary maintaining the frontage plantings in front of the school. It’s a blessed buffer zone, shielding students who come and go from dangers of traffic and un-pleasantries of the neighborhood. Passersby, on foot and on wheels, foul the greenery with an amazing amount of trash. The haul this past week set a record – not just in quantity, but quality. It’s almost like someone strolled through a drug store, grabbed stuff at random, got away, and then tossed the things of little value. The encounter was puzzling, even for our experienced Team who thought they had seen everything. But we are proud to be part of the buffer zone between young scholars and the dangers and disappointments of the world they will (too soon) come to know. Mean Greeners - This Friday, August 18, we will meet at 9:00 a.m. at our Dewey work site. Dewey Elementary School is located at 3251 Rosecrans Street near Bev Mo. We take care of the frontage plantings in front of Dewey. There is no parking along Rosecrans, but you may park in the large Loma Square parking lot where Sprouts and other stores are located. We will be weeding, trimming and picking up trash so the area looks nice when the kids return to school on Monday the 21st. Please bring your vest, gloves and favorite tools. We'll have collection bags/bins on hand as well as some tools to lend. If you are new to the group, we will lend you a vest. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, as we will gather afterward in the grassy park across the street from Con Pane (2750 Dewey Road in Liberty Station) for refreshments and conversation. Point Loma Park is a “U” shaped park located behind and around the fire station on Catalina Blvd. and Varona St. It is the site for the Point Loma Summer Concerts. We trim, weed and pick up litter in areas around the parking lot that is adjacent to the fire station entrance, as well as in the large park area on the north side of the station. There is plenty of parking in the area. This week we will concentrate on the large park area/north side of the work site. Please bring your vest, gloves and favorite tools. We will have collection bags/bins on hand as well as some tools to lend. If you are new to the group we will also lend you a vest. There are two medium-size areas, one on each side of Nimitz, that look like pork chops (hence the name). You may park at the Dusty Rhodes Dog Park or on side streets. If you are on Nimitz coming from the PL village, turn left on West Point Loma and then make an immediate right turn into the dog park parking lot. We will continue to weed, trim, and pick up trash. We salute our Mean Green Team community volunteers for 3,943 donated hours in the fiscal year ending June 1. Weekly work at multiple public areas around the Point helps keep our volunteers young at heart and heart-healthy. Our tools get a workout, too! Over time, some wear out and we need to recruit replacements. Our friends at The Peninsula Alliance detected our need and donated some new equipment – 10 high end pruners/clippers and 6 weeders with handle extensions. Jim and Kim Musgrove and Mel Roark presented the collection to the team last week. Last Friday we had 31 volunteers help beautify Liberty Station. For a second time in June, the Green Team tended the landscaping at NTC Park Monument Row, pulling weeds, trimming plants, picking up trash and sweeping around the memorials - not to mention the barrels full of mulch that were blanketed on the medians between the sidewalks. Thank you Team for all the hard work you do around the Peninsula! Ed's Triangle is a 1.3 acre triangular median on Nimitz near the entrance to I-8 and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. The median has large mature palm trees around the circumference. We usually park on the empty gravel south of the median.
