It took a total of six years to complete the project, and even SYD himself said, "Yamato may be my life's work," every time he met with me. The Yamato 2520 was project named "Yamato 3," after the first being World War II Battleship Yamato, the second being the Space Battleship Yamato, and the third being this Yamato 2520. At the Progressions exhibition(2019), I met an episode from the grand-daughter of the original designer of the Battleship Yamato WWⅡ. The Yamato was designed as a ship that would never sink, but the tragedy of its sinking, which resulted in many lost in the battle, was something that the designer regretted for the rest of his life. He cried every time he watched the Space Battleship Yamato anime on TV in 80s. His grand-daughter said that she wanted to show the MEAD Yamato to her late grandfather designer. I told Syd about this episode during the exhibition, and he was very moved and respected the original designer. At that time, it was 6 monthes after I heard SYD's retirement, and just before 6 monthes he pass away. Of course, the Yamato was only loaded with fuel for the one-way trip to Okinawa, as the Japanese undoubtedly had 100 million people in mind. The night before the crew's departure was, of course, the last supper of drinking and singing. The reason was that the military believed blindly that if the Yamato carried out a suicide attack, all Japanese would be crushed to ashes. It became very difficult for non-Japanese to understand the Yamato spirit, which valued the beauty of the dying and the dying without fear of death as a virtue. Of course, it goes without saying that SYD fully understood not only the Yamato spirit, but also the wabi-sabi, samurai philosophy, and the Japanese view of life and death, and worked on the Yamato design, even though it was a reimportation.
