A New Serenity Prayer by Fr. James Martin God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, which is pretty much everyone, since I’m clearly not you, God. At least not the last time I checked. And while you’re at it, God, please give me the courage to change what I need to change about myself, which is frankly a lot, since, once again, I’m not you, which means I’m not perfect. It’s better for me to focus on changing myself than to worry about changing other people, who, as you’ll no doubt remember me saying, I can’t change anyway. Finally, give me the wisdom to just shut up whenever I think that I’m clearly smarter than everyone else in the room, that no one knows what they’re talking about except me, or that I alone have all the answers. Basically, God, grant me the wisdom to remember that I’m not you. Amen.

One of the worst punishments has to be exile. Or isolation. We weren't meant to be living apart and isolated from each other. Yet, in our modern world, we are. We are physically and geographically separated, through suburban and urban sprawl. We are also separated also because we rely more on our digital devices than each other. These can help, no doubt, but they aren't a substitute for warm-blooded companions on our life's journeys. These kinds of separations are a kind of exile. And it's contributing to our loneliness. The Covid-19 pandemic made it worse. We were already tracking down this path of disconnection. And now, we need to learn what it means to belong to each other all over again. We can't survive living in exile. We weren't meant to live alone and isolated. We need each other. How can we find the way back to each other? How can we belong to each other once again? In today's Gospel reading from John 15:26-27 and John 16:4-15, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will be with the disciples. The word used for the Holy Spirit here is translated as Advocate, but it can also mean Helper or Comforter. God doesn't leave us alone — the Advocate is always with us to comfort, guide, and help us in all things.

Give me an honest soul, where uncertainty is not hidden but acknowledged. May my scars speak of your healing. Let me value vulnerability above facade. Help me trust you with my ‘what ifs’. Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the discrimination faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals worldwide. The ‘Sanctuary’ collection continues with the penultimate poem ‘5001’, through which The Poet brings us into the environment of One Church’s Community Meal. Every third Sunday of the month, volunteers from the congregation gather every third to cook and serve hot meals to vulnerable people in Brighton’s local community, ensuring that they too can experience some sanctuary from life’s hardships. John O’Donohue was an Irish priest and writer who connected Celtic and Christian traditions, especially through his reflections on the mystery and beauty of nature. He also wrote about the idea of "thresholds" — the space that marks a before and after, your old life and your new life, a past season and a new one. During this session, you’ll be guided by Rabbi Myriam Klotz and Rabbi Ari Lev Fornari, a senior rabbi at Kol Tzedek Congregation and a faculty member at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva. Rabbi Fornari, a white, queer, trans person of Ashkenazi and Italian descent, brings a rich background in meditative practices that calm the mind and warm the heart.
