Over that stretch, I had a sublime encounter with a pod of dolphins and just one good buddy amidst a gleaming golden sunset, I shared a wave with a pelican, and I was both blessed and challenged by the ocean and its energy, beauty, and intensity. The feather Iโm holding up is from one of our local shore birds, a beautiful long-billed curlew. They are the largest sandpiper in N. America. She was hanging out with me before one of my surf sessions and left this feather upon my return. Just a simple reminder here to stay connected to nature and to our hearts during these wild, tumultuous times on planet E. This whole journey is fleeting and temporary, folks, for all of us. There are moments for a musician, or any artist, where we become so immersed in the art, the music, the vibe, the flow, that for a time we actually become it. We become the art, the sound, the pure expressionโฆ and both personality and self-consciousness are lost or absorbed by the power and beauty of the music itself. In Bhakti yoga, this is referred to as being โin the bhav.โ In the West, we call it being in the zone, or in flow state. It has other names too in the Eastโฆ perhaps zen, satori, and even samadhi. It is a state of being one with life, one with the moment, where the ego is surrendered and lost into the now. Many of my closest friends, as musicians, surfers, yogis, artists, and various seekers, have spent our lives engaged in this sort of non-material pursuit. Halloween sunset 2022... I was fortunate to experience this entire sunset from the water while surfing with my friend and neighbor Kirk @rojogrande180 ... We were all by ourselves trading waves between ooohs and aaahs. There were two separate yet interconnected spectacles happening in the sky. There was the horizon, the sunset skyline. What was happening out there was beyond words and our experience of it was likely heightened by the vulnerable vantage point of being in the ocean at dusk. The other magnificent display was happening straight up over our heads where a huge, dark, ominous mass of cloud swirled in a slow-motion, tornado-like manner, engulfing the entire sky above. The whole experience was breathtaking and surreal. If you experienced this stunning Halloween sunset, then you know. The fourth pic was taken by Kirk from the beach at the end of our session as the colors were fading into darkness. Thatโs me barely visible paddling into a wave, immersed in the twilight. More Mount Shasta magic from the middle slope, 7000โ-9000โ elevation. Iโve been hiking and camping on this mountain and the surrounding zone for 30 years and have come to know some really unique natural areas that to this day have remained incredibly secluded and absolutely pristine. Usually the gift of such immersion into nature is an intrinsic one. But sometimes we are gifted with something tangible, beyond the beauty and character of the location itself. In this instance, it was finding this palm-sized chunk of what I believe is malachite (second photo). In the past Iโve found jade, crystals, and huge mounds of serpentine. If you know me, you know I love these natural treasures, yet of course the ultimate gift is the fresh air, the resounding silence, the pure vibrations, the radiant spring water, the high altitude, and the experience of the energy of the mountain itself.
