Know this masterpiece? Well, again, probably I go with an unpopular opinion, but to me this album is a top 30 1995 forgotten classic! Mystidious Misfitss are a trio of pure MCs: Rubberband, Marquest and Messiah Peekaboo, they embrace and celebrate that style of rap that I love to the death! That crazy, acrobatic, meandering, lyrical, abstract, dynamic (and off-beat too) flow so typical from the end of 1992 to the mid 94'. And they do it VERY well. However, there's a problem: as always, where we talking about REAL hip hop albums, there are UNLUCKY issues in abundance: "A Who Dat?" was released only in 1995 (and not in 93' or 94' for some label issues). And in 1995 hip hop was finding new ways and new styles, this prototype of mad-dynamic and energetic emceeing sounded sadly aged. This is in my opinion the most valid reason why Mystidious Misfitss and their album are unknown. Anyway, I repeat, I consider this album a classic, a pure piece of REAL Hip Hop (truly helpful to understand this music in its artistic declinations), or at least an east coast essential listening. If you love Das Efx, Leaders of the New School, Fu-Schnickens, Yaggfu Front, Rumpletilskinz, Lords of the Underground, Trends of Culture, or Pharcyde debut, you will appreciate this masterpiece for sure! Morning music @djpooh In 1997 the legendary West Coast producer, DJ Pooh, released the compilation, "Bad Newz Travels Fast". Pooh is a West Coast Hip-Hop legend, working with the who's who throughout his career. In 97 he gave us this compilation of all new material, and it's a really dope album. Probably best known for the Kam song that disses Ice Cube, there's so much more on this record. Would of loved to get some more albums by Pooh. Let's talk about The Game and his mixtape You Know What It Is Vol. 3. Dropped in 2005, man, what a time back then. So I just wanna say I'm a big G-Unit fan, a big 50 Cent fan, I fondly remember that early 2000's era, G-Unit gear everywhere, commercials, videos, I was 9 years old in 2005, and I remember being in school wanting to dress like these guys. G-Unit was the shit, household names type of shit. And I'm from Los Angeles, so obviously we were rocking with The Game, he was holding the west coast down. Honestly I wish The Game's career would have aged better in the past few years, I wish he gave us a grown mature type of album, maybe similiar to Nipsey's Victory Lap. After his albums 1992 and Born to Rap, I haven't been too invested in his music. I'm not too fond of the shock value name dropping at this point in his life, but back then young Game was a problem. We were team Game all day back then, this mixtape was all over Los Angeles in 2005 and 2006, people were wearing Stop Snitchin Stop Lying T shirts, and we stayed on limewire downloading these tracks, making our own mixtapes when we burned CD's. This is a beef diss record mixtape, and yes it's mad disrespectful and pretty much on other peoples beats, but alot of dope disses if you remember this time period. I highly recommend this to all my hip hop heads. Zev Love X featured in the June 1994 issue of The Source magazine in an article by Ronin Ro titled “Life After Death” promoting KMD’s second studio album, which was pulled by the record label by the time the issue was published. The publication decided to run the feature, and also intended to include their review of “Bl_ck B_st_rds” in the same issue but decided to wait and see if Zev Love X could find a new label from which to release the album, but it never came to pass. Mourning the recent passing of his brother and group member Subroc, it’s palpable from the interview that X was disillusioned with the state of the music industry and how things were going for him on the label - it felt as if the writing was on the wall. And ironically - almost prophetically - a line from the interview referring to X says “his face is a mask of torment,” almost foreshadowing his metamorphosis into the masked villain, MF DOOM. R.I.P. The month of May marks what would have been the 30th anniversary of one of my favourite albums of all time: KMD’s classic, once unreleased sophomore LP, “Bl_ck B_ast_rds.” Originally scheduled to drop on Elektra Records, 03 May 1994 was its intended release date according to the label’s promo and press pack, whereas another source cites 24th May ‘94. But in a sad and regrettable turn of events, the album was suddenly shelved at the last minute due to controversy surrounding the cover artwork, and KMD were unceremoniously dropped from Elektra - all of this just weeks after Zev Love X’s brother and group member Subroc tragically passed away in a mysterious hit and run incident. Elektra made a limited promo cassette tape of the album available to journalists and radio DJs before the LP was pulled, and I was lucky enough to get hold of a dubbed copy thanks to @therealdjmk around the time it was due to drop, so I was able to listen to and marvel at the album’s dopeness - making it a huge part of my soundtrack of the spring and summer of ‘94. When I learnt the record was shelved and KMD were dropped, I was really thankful and relieved to have a copy, but at the same time felt huge disappointment that the album might never see the light of day. If released as intended, there’s no doubt in my mind that it would have been an instant ‘90s underground classic. In May 2000 Zev Love X - then MF DOOM by that time - released the project on his own imprint, Metal Face Recordings in collaboration with Readyrock Records, and since then there have been many more releases and reissues, making this once supremely sought-after, much lauded classic widely available for the masses to enjoy and appreciate. Pictured: the 2015 deluxe double vinyl reissue, the 2023 reissue on red coloured double vinyl, the OG 1994 US 12” single “What A N**** Know” (including the remix with MF Grimm) / “Constipated Monkey” / “Q3,” and the 2000 double vinyl version of the LP on Metal Face Records / Readyrock Records. Happy 60th Birthday to trailblazing Hip Hop icon, D.M.C.! Darryl McDaniels, famously known as DMC, emerged as a pivotal figure in the rise of Hip Hop during the 80s. He grew up in Hollis, Queens, alongside his future bandmates Joseph “Run” Simmons and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell. Together, they formed the groundbreaking Hip Hop group Run-D.M.C. With their debut self-titled album released in 1984, Run-D.M.C. became trailblazers in the music industry, infusing rap with rock elements and pioneering a new sound that would come to define the genre. Their sophomore album, “King of Rock” (1985), solidified their status as Hip Hop royalty. However, it was their collaboration with rock band Aerosmith on a remake of “Walk This Way” that propelled them to mainstream success. The fusion of rap and rock broke barriers, paving the way for future collaborations between artists from different genres. In addition, they made history as the first rap group to earn a platinum album and the first to have a music video aired on MTV. After Jam Master Jay’s tragic and untimely death in 2002, DMC faced depression and addiction but found comfort in therapy and creativity. Morning music @mallygdefsquad In 1993 the East Coast group, Illegal, released their 1 and only album, "The Untold Truth". The duo of Jamal & Mr. Malik were still kids, but hit the ground running right out the gate. It's too bad we never got another album from them, but Jamal went on to give us years of dope rhymes with the Def Squad for years after. But this is a great debut, featuring production by Erick Sermon, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Biz Markie & more. Definitely has that mid 90's East Coast vibe, think a more street version of Kris Kross (who they actually diss in a song). My favorite songs are "Head or Gut", "Back In The Day", "On Da M.I.C.", "Understand the Flow", "If U Want It" & "Illegal Will Rock". Yo wassup everyone, today let's talk about G. Dep and his album Child Of The Ghetto. Dropped in 2001, man where do we begin, G. Dep is pretty underrated to be honest. During Bad Boy's early-2000s rebuilding era, G. Dep and Black Rob were holding down the fort. This album goes under the radar, one of those hidden gems of the early 2000's. One thing this album has that always stood out, is a feature from both Rakim and Kool G Rap on the track I Am. This is one of the most underrated Bad Boy albums, I highly recommend this to all my hip hop heads.
